Dinner Topics Newsletter: Moral Standard

March 2015 Dinner Topics Newsletter: Moral Standard

Dear Friends,

Welcome to Epicworld Dinner Topics!

Moral Standards chart_8032_image009A teacher in our Sunday School class told us that he and his teenage son had a discussion about morality. “Don’t worry, Dad,” his son said, “I’ll always make sure my standards are above the standards of the world.

The teacher explained his answer by drawing this simple graph. “Suppose,” he said, “that our standards are defined by keeping the Ten Commandments, so we’ll call righteous behavior a ’10.’ This is the Christian moral standard—it stays at 10, it doesn’t change.

“Let’s say that today the world’s standard is at 9.5. So you’re at 10, and you’re above their standard. Good job. Now, as time goes on, say, 10, 20 years from now—you may stay above the world standards, but where is the world now, and where are you?”

bible1This was many years ago, but I have never forgotten that image. It’s what it means to hold to moral absolutes. When I was growing up, character training was kind of a natural part of our education, although even then it was slipping out of the schools. Now, in the 50 years since the infamous ruling that banned the Bible and prayer from schools (1963), we have seen the standards of the world plunge into an abyss.

What is to be done about it? You guessed it! The Bible has been banned from the schools, but not from our homes. The Ten Commandments are absolute—and we can depend on them as a guide to our families—absolutely.

It has been my experience that children generally crave guidance. As the song goes, “Keep the Commandments, in this there is safety and peace.”

Highlights

This leads us to our stress relief tip for this month: Keep the Commandments. It is not always easy, but in the long run, as one Christian leader said, it is easier to Prepare and Prevent than to Repair and Repent.

Defining Moment this month will include Standards for Children and Youth. Actually, the Bible is the best character education guide of all time. Bible Stories this month will include: Joseph’s rejection of Potiphar’s wife, Samson and Delilah, the integrity of Job, and the parable of the empty house.

truth2momentIn today’s world, Truth is under assault, and has been for many years. Articles this month will dispel many false perceptions. For example, the current admission by “experts” that after all these years of scare-mongering, cholesterol is now declared a false issue; also—the truth about stem cell therapy. In Science, Media, Academia, and Government—the “Four Corners of Deceit”—it is important to learn to distinguish truth from error; our lives and liberty depend on it.

Theme Quotes for March: Moral Standard

Moses and 10 cropFor thou, Lord, wilt bless the righteous; with favour wilt thou compass him as with a shield. ~Psalm 5:12

We believe in absolute truth, including the existence of God and the right and wrong established by His commandments. We know that the existence of God and the existence of absolute truth are fundamental to life on this earth, whether they are believed in or not. We also know that evil exists and that some things are simply, seriously, and everlastingly wrong. ~ Dallin H. Oaks

Tolerance for behavior is like a two-sided coin. Tolerance or respect is on one side of the coin, but truth is always on the other. ~ Dallin H. Oaks

“It is impossible to stand upright when one plants his roots in the shifting sands of popular opinion and approval. … We will all face fear, experience ridicule, and meet opposition. Let us—all of us—have the courage to defy the consensus, the courage to stand for principle.” ~ Thomas S. Monson

Regardless of what civil legislation may be enacted, the doctrine of the Lord regarding marriage and morality cannot be changed.37 Remember: sin, even if legalized by man, is still sin in the eyes of God! ~Russell M. Nelson

Even if “everyone is doing it,” wrong is never right. Evil, error, and darkness will never be truth, even if popular. In fact, 50 million people can be wrong—totally wrong. Immorality is still immorality in the eyes of God. ~Russell M. Nelson

The opposite of Courage: “Most of the world fears the raised fist while we in America fear the raised eyebrow.” ~Mack Stiles

“Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people.  It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.” ~John Adams

“The face of sin today often wears the mask of tolerance. Do not be deceived; behind that facade is heartache, unhappiness, and pain. … If your so-called friends urge you to do anything you know to be wrong, you be the one to make a stand for right, even if you stand alone.” ~Thomas S. Monson

“Those people who will not be governed by God will be ruled by tyrants.”
William Penn

“Education is useless without the Bible.”
Noah Webster

Let not that which I have appointed be polluted by mine enemies, by the consent of those who call themselves after my name. ~Doctrine and Covenants 101:97

Defining Moments

“Defining Moments” is a monthly feature. Kind of a fancy name for a glossary. When I was growing up, we had a huge dictionary on a tall, narrow, rolling table. Whenever we asked the meaning of a word, we were told to “look it up.” We still do that. You’d be surprised at some of the interesting things you find in the dictionary, especially the 1828 American Dictionary. Now, with all the twists and spins that politicians and the media do to common words, it’s valuable to go back to the original meaning. It can make for interesting conversation, too.

Alert! Action Updates

Seeing the widespread injury done in any given week, (many incidents go unreported), stay aware of important news and insights at Epicworld Dinner Topics.

Traditional Bible-believing parents may have to consider withdrawing their children from public schools to protect your family spiritually and financially from the rising tide of persecution and ruinous lawsuits by anti-Christian fascists.

If it is not possible for you to home school, try to teach your children Judeo-Christian values at home. The easiest way to do this is to tell stories and discuss principles at the family dinner table. I hope these dinner topics help you with this vital effort. Just don’t give up! Our precious children are worth fighting for.

teapartyresults6It is important to understand that the Tea Party is not a third political party. Nor does it represent all the slanderous falsehoods hurled upon them by those who hate America and her Founders. It is organized to restore Constitutional principles to the government of America. If you love the USA with good, old-fashioned patriotism, then the Tea Party is the best organization to work for the principles and values you cherish.
