Christian Lifestyle: Scripture Study is Happiness Key

Daily Bread

keyoldManna, which thou knewest not, neither did thy fathers know; that he might make thee know that man doth not live by bread only, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of the LORD doth man live. (Deuteronomy 8:3)

mannaAfter departing from Egypt, and leaving behind the flesh pots and cucumbers, thousands of people found themselves in the middle of the desert. What could they all possibly eat, that would feed such huge multitudes? The Lord allowed them to get rather hungry, until they were humbled, and realized how totally dependent they were upon the God who led them out of bondage. Then he rained down bread from heaven. The people called it manna, which translated, means “what is it?” After such long captivity in a land ruled by strangers, they were unfamiliar with both the Bread of Life and the Giver of it.

They were instructed to gather manna to feed themselves. It was requisite that they gather it each day, as it did not stay fresh after one day. Only for Sunday could they gather on Saturday and it would stay fresh through the Sabbath. As time passed, people became bored with the manna.

biblereadmeWe, too, can become bored with the scriptures, and look in other places to be fed. Then we may be left alone in the wilderness until we so hunger for strength, guidance, or comfort that the eyes of our humility are opened and we see the manna right there, at our fingertips, where it has been all along. We gather it once, and our souls are fed at last. So fulfilling is that bread from heaven that we go back the next day for more, and we realize we cannot really live without it.

Dinner Talk Topic:

Find manna for the modern family. *Scripture Study

  1. If we do not feel “fed” in church meetings, what is the reason?
  2. Why couldn’t the children of Israel get a week’s supply of manna in one gathering?
  3. Why do we need spiritual nourishment as well as physical food?
  4. What is the benefit of daily scripture study over occasional perusal?
