Who is Missing?
In our day, when we see ruthless dictators and demagogues seizing power in various nations, we wonder, “Where did these evil tyrants come from?”
Among all the wicked nations that have rejected the Lord, Satan glories in elevating to power those who are the devil’s most depraved and loyal followers. ~W. Cleon Skousen
That’s who’s missing. In 1963, a handful of men in black issued a decree from their elite court, banishing God and the Bible from the schools. With Him went the Ten Commandments and their corresponding moral absolutes. And Truth.
The Birthright sold for— Pottage Sewage
The vacuum created by those thoughtless justices has been filled—with sewage that has overflowed from the gutter.
God has been replaced by idols: government, movie stars, games, sports, sex, perversion, atheism, animals, money, the world, race, etc.
Gods of power, wealth, and influence … are quite as real as the golden calves of the children of Israel in the wilderness. ~Spencer W. Kimball
The Truth has been replaced by unproven scientific theories, the doctrines of men, totalitarian philosophies, food fads, and other lies and hoaxes.
Satan goeth abroad deceiving the nations. ~Doctrine and Covenants 52:14
“If a nation expects to be ignorant and free, in a state of civilization, it expects what never was and never will be.” ~Thomas Jefferson
In the schools—
- Character education has been replaced by moral relativism
- Heritage has been replaced by political correctness
- Empiricism, or the scientific method, has been replaced by junk science, hoaxes
- Critical thinking has been replaced by blind ignorance and mindless obedience to propaganda
- Modesty in language and clothing has been replaced by profanity and indecency
- Uplifting stories and clever humor in entertainment have been replaced by trite re-runs and tasteless jokes. Someone wisely said, “Vulgarity is no substitute for wit.”
- Love of God and Loyalty to Country have been replaced by lust for money and power and its inevitable corruption
What Is to Be Done?
Children of every age long to connect with their spiritual roots— to find something to hang onto throughout their lives. Where can they turn?
To society? To TV? To schools? There is no evidence that these have been sources of lasting family stability.
How can we restore what has been lost, especially for our children? Quite simply, we need to put God back in the center of our lives. It is God who holds the key to our happiness. That key is found in His infinite love.
Children and youth can sink their roots deep at home, where the dinner talk parable is a way of life. As they are trained by daily example to repent, and hold fast every day to the word of God, they are building on the rock, finding an anchor to their soul.
What is the Key to the Grand Plan of Happiness?
Simply defined, “repent” means to turn from doing wrong and dedicate oneself to the amendment of one’s life. People often become weary of hearing about repentance, which has been the unrelenting message of God’s prophets since the beginning of history.
But contrary to popular perception of this little word, it is the key that Jesus gives us all to protect us from the poisonous effects of sin.
After Jesus partook of that unspeakably bitter cup, His personal message to all of us verifies the words of His prophets— adding weight that only comes from experience.
For behold, I, God, have suffered these things for all, that they might not suffer, if they would repent;
But if they would not repent they must suffer even as I;
Which suffering caused myself, even God, the greatest of all, to tremble because of pain, and to bleed at every pore, and to suffer both body and spirit— and would that I might not drink the bitter cup, and shrink—
Nevertheless. . . I partook.
Wherefore I command you again to repent. ~ Jesus Christ, Doctrine and Covenants 19:16-20
And thus we see that “repent” is a message of love, because it is the single key to divine mercy.
As parents pass this loving truth from generation to generation, families and descendants can enjoy a “golden age,” regardless of their circumstances.
This key, shared, can go on to bless societies and nations, as well.
