Introduction: Parents’ Mentoring Guide

Dear Parents, family6prayingA Christian leader once said that the most important of the Lord’s work you will ever do will be the work you do within the walls of your own home. Who better to mentor and shape the souls of the rising generation than you?

“It is so obvious that the great good and the terrible evil in the world today are the sweet and the bitter fruits of the rearing of yesterday’s children. As we train a new generation, so will the world be in a few years. If you are worried about the future, then look to the upbringing of your children.”~Gordon B. Hinckley

I’m sure, like me, you are finding much truth to the old adage that if you want something done, you have to do it yourself. But no denying that this is a big job.

biblicallamp“In our lives the oil of preparedness is accumulated drop by drop in righteous living. ~Spencer W. Kimball

How and where do we begin? Let’s keep it simple. The foundational principle of character education is to establish the purpose of life.

Reason for Being

Know your purpose. When your children understand their true purpose in life, their lives will be built on solid Rock and they will be able to withstand the fierce winds and storms of soul-destroying evil that are engulfing our society.

Why are we here?

People have been fighting for freedom since the War in Heaven. (Revelation 12:7) Today’s culture war is a continuation of that epic struggle. The enemy of truth and righteousness is in a war against family, faith, and freedom. And he is playing for keeps. Map resizeSo our purpose, though far from easy, is simple: We must prepare our children to Defend Family, Faith, and Freedom. There! We have taken our first step. Now—a brief map of the journey before us.

Training Grounds

Epic Journey Guideposts

fathermentoring1. Epic Heroes in Training.

Here you will meet noble epic heroes, and learn principles of leadership. Everyone loves an epic hero.

2. Landmarks.

These posts are Biblical principles that point out the path to righteous living. Also, each day’s post contains an empowering key of knowledge. The daily posts cover a wide spectrum of current events and other dinner topics—all in manageable byte-size, one topic per day—which build a strong Judeo-Christian Worldview.

3. Defining Moments.

Here we encounter the rigors of character education and critical thinking. Well, all of the training evokes critical thinking, but parables, definitions, and other stories are the meat of the Bible—which explains why it is still the most widely read book in the world.

4. Secrets of the Past.

History holds many keys to our very survival. How? When we see the choices and consequences of nations and leaders both past and present, we begin to see patterns—powerful lessons from the past that can help our children be better leaders in the future.

5. Our Greatest Weapon.

Since we are seeing so much trouble caused by lies and deception, Truth is our greatest weapon, to free us from the bondage of evil and corruption. The books on this list will penetrate darkness with the light of truth, open the eyes of our understanding and free us from the captivity of ignorance.

C.A. Davidson is an award-winning author in children’s education literature. She has a web presence of more than ten years, promoting family meals and Judeo-Christian values. Her new novel, Birthright, is now available on Amazon. When the Supreme Court rendered a life-changing decision banning God and the Bible from schools, Davidson watched rising generations lose connection with their Judeo-Christian heritage. This novel is an epic story, told in a historical setting, to lead readers and their families back to our cherished culture of liberty through literary fiction, character education, and critical thinking.

rescuing the one

by Wilhelmena Davidson

If we are to restore our cherished Judeo-Christian values, it must be done by and within our traditional families, which are the foundation of Western Civilization. Parents and grandparents, it is up to us to rescue and preserve our children’s birthright—the culture of liberty. This website, Epicworld Dinner Topics,  is here to provide resources for parents to fortify the rising generation with those soul-saving values. Thanks to the internet, we can do this in our own homes, without subjecting our families to the high financial and spiritual costs of secular institutions. Our study reveals that the following needs are no longer met in most schools. Therefore it is our purpose here to provide resources for parents to fill those needs of our young adults in the home.

1. Traditional Values

With all the benefits of technology, one downside has been that family communication has become fragmented. In the “old days,” before cell phones and video games, we used to eat dinner together every night as a family. A study by the Center for Alcohol and Substance Abuse (CASA) documents that children and young adults who eat with their family: dinner 1) Abuse drugs less                2) Have better health                3) Do better in school

Dinner hour is a perfect time to teach family values, using stories from the Bible, literature, and current events. Epic Heroes Academy has promoted family meals online for ten years, with the added benefit of providing dinner topics each day, making it easier to teach character education, and saving parents hours of work. This ongoing resource is on our home page.

2.  Academic FreedomScripturePoetry

Recently, reputable scientists have been bringing forth evidence of intelligent design in the creation. For some reason, however, atheists insist that science and religion are not compatible. With a religious fervor of their own, atheists have sometimes tossed aside the classic empirical method and grasped at any means to “prove” their theories, resulting in some outrageous hoaxes.

Most Christians simply seek truth as Jesus taught us to do; we are not afraid of truth. As Thomas Paine noted, “It is error only, not truth, which shrinks from inquiry.”Studies show that church-going young adults drop out between the ages of 18 and 22. That was four years ago. Now we are seeing children following the sad example of their floundering older siblings. It is heartbreaking.  Without Judeo-Christian roots, the Youth feel lost and unhappy.Whether or not you believe that the Bible is a sacred book, it can be shown in many ways that the Bible is at the very least a valid history.  We are free to examine “banned books” such as the Bible in our homes. An enduring truth taught by Jesus Christ is that “ye shall know them by their fruits.” All are invited to study the word of God with an honest heart. Faithful Christians will attest to Isaiah’s claim that “ … all thy children shall be taught of the Lord, and great shall be the peace of thy children.” (Isaiah 54:13)

3. Good LiteratureEpic Hero resize med

Meghan Gurdon, a children’s book reviewer, writes of the “increasingly dark current that runs through books classified as YA, for Young Adult—books aimed at readers between 12 and 18 years of age—a subset that has, in the four decades since Young Adult became a distinct category in fiction, become increasingly lurid, grotesque, profane, sexual, and ugly. The body of children’s literature is a little like the Library of Babel in the Jorge Luis Borges story—shelf after shelf of books, many almost gibberish, but a rare few filled with wisdom and beauty and answers to important questions.”Certainly traditional life themes such as good vs. evil or right and wrong are not to be found. Today young people are bombarded so much with images that their creative and imaginative abilities suffer. There is no substitute for reading of good literature to stretch the mind and refresh the soul.

How to get your rising heroes ready for their future leadership pilgrimpraying

4. History

Because of anti-Western Culture motivations, the Columbus and Thanksgiving stories, if mentioned at all, are purged of meaningful content. Any references to religious values or morality cause Founding Fathers to be totally deleted from history, leaving youth rootless and floundering for lack of worthy role models, unable to identify with their noble heritage. Oh, they do get pirates and “grand theft auto” and other criminals for role models.

5. Critical Thinkingwhy

Any young adults who know only whose Tweet is the most shocking, or who is the latest sleeping partner of their favorite celebrity are woefully ill-prepared for the leadership roles that will be required of them in the future—not to mention the even more important responsibility of setting a good parental example. Missing from public education is instruction in a moral worldview, which provides important lessons from the choices of past and current world figures, and the unavoidable consequences of those choices.Critical Thinking— part of the Epic Heroes Training— will include: critical thinking topics based on the novels; in-depth character education; history in the form of Epic Stories; book reviews; Bible patterns as light from the past and windows to the future; annual essay contests with cash prizes.Thank you for supporting Epic Heroes Academy—restoring Judeo-Christian values to families and training young adults for leadership of the future.
