Culture Wars: Moral Relativism vs. God, Christian Values

Culture Wars:

Moral Relativism vs. God, Christian Values

When a society rebels against God Almighty, absurdity rules

Tim Wildmon,

American Family Association President

key“And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a debased mind to do what ought not to be done.” (Romans 1:28)

culture-wars-shootfootAll was quiet in the home state of Andy Griffith until February 22 of this year when the Charlotte City Council passed an ordinance requiring all government agencies and private businesses to insure that men could use women’s bathrooms if they wanted to.

The legal problem with that move was that the state constitution of North Carolina requires all “public accommodation” laws to be handled at the state level. In other words, what Charlotte did was not within their authority, so the governor and the state legislature responded by passing HB 2 on March 23, which “mandates people use the bathroom corresponding to their biological sex in public buildings, places, and schools.”

Simply put, everything was fine – Charlotte enacted a law they had no authority to enact, and the state of North Carolina put everything back like it was.

For this simple common sense law, the state of North Carolina has become the whipping boy for the Lesbian, Gay, Bi-sexual, and Transgender political machine and their many powerful supporters in big business, academia, the liberal media, and the entertainment industry.

No single group of people holds more power in America today than does the LGBT lobby, this despite the fact that they represent a relatively small number of people. It is estimated that 2% of Americans are lesbian or gay and 0.3% are transgendered, i.e., a person who is a male but says he is a female or vice versa.

Even the National Collegiate Athletic Association punished North Carolina by taking away sporting events scheduled for the Tar Heel state. NCAA leadership is made up of university presidents. So, very smart people who have reached the highest levels of academia sat around in a room somewhere and decided that because North Carolina wants to keep men out of bathrooms reserved for women and young girls, the state must be punished. And this law applied only to bathrooms, showers, etc. that were state property.

gay-gestapoIn other knee-jerk reactions over the issue, PayPal Corporation withdrew its plans for building a large office complex in North Carolina. PayPal is the same company that built their global operations center in Malaysia where homosexual behavior is against the law, punishable by whipping or prison time.

The NBA pulled their all-star game out of Charlotte. Christian sports celebrities Russell Wilson and Stephen Curry condemned their home state for wanting to keep women’s bathrooms for women and girls only. Legendary Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski said what North Carolina did was “embarrassing.”

What is going on here? Why is the whole world coming down on North Carolina over something like this? Even if you thought welcoming men into women’s restrooms and showers was a good idea, does the penalty fit the “crime?” You would think North Carolina had reinstated slavery.

What is going on is a country in rebellion against God Almighty. This is about putting the final touches on the sexual revolution. The Bible clearly states that homosexuality is unnatural, immoral, and unhealthy. Everyone knows that a man who thinks he is a woman has a mental disorder, not to mention a spiritual one.

Bruce Jenner will always be a man even if he wears a dress and heels the rest of his life. Yet, his confusion is lauded by the media and popular culture as brave and heroic. What’s really going on here is demonic. It’s a culture shaking its collective fist at God and shouting: “Don’t tell us how to live! We will not listen to your rules!”

What we are watching in America today is Romans 1 being played out before our very eyes.

Culture Wars, Millennials, and Absolute Truth

Culture Wars, Millennials, and Absolute Truth

We are losing a generation

Tim Wildmon

President, American Family Association

keyIn some important ways, a large part of this generation – even some who identify as Christians – have rejected the notion of absolute truth. We need to get busy educating and recruiting young Christians to the cause of Christ for the good of our culture.

millennialsOctober 2016 – In America we have more churches, more Christian movies, and more Christian attractions than any other time in history. And yet, Christianity is on the decline! We are losing the generation born between 1980 and 2000. Largely, they are rejecting even the most fundamental values of a Christian worldview. They need to be engaged with the gospel and with today’s burning issues.

I am speaking about the largest generation of our time – the Millennials.

Last summer, a Pew Foundation survey revealed that a startling 70% of Millennials favor allowing homosexuals to marry. That’s 25 percentage points higher than my generation, the Baby Boomers.

These are our future leaders. And I believe that unless we reach out in a very strategic way, the church in America will continue to decline.

moral-fuzzy-youthI’m deeply concerned about this generation. These young people have come of age in an American culture in which wrong is promoted as right, and tolerance claims a much higher value than truth. In some important ways, a large part of this generation – even some who identify as Christians – have rejected the notion of absolute truth. As Paul wrote in Ephesians 4:14, they are being “tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes.”

My 27-year-old son Wesley came to work for AFA when he finished college about four years ago. His primary role is to reach out to ministry partners like you and let them know what AFA is doing. After a few months at his new job Wesley and I had this conversation:

Wesley:  Dad, I need to talk to you.

Me: Yes, what is it?

Wesley: Most of our supporters that I am talking with are 50 or older. They are wonderful people who believe in what AFA stands for, and many of them have been with us for a long time.

Me: You got something against old people?

afa-rising-generationWesley: No, no, (laughing). I understand that they are our most faithful supporters. But I think we need to look farther down the road. You are always saying we need more troops in the battle, right?

Me: O.K. I agree. What do you propose?

Wesley: I have an idea …

We continued a long conversation about how he and other Millennials on the AFA staff had already been gathering to pray regularly that God will guide them in reaching their generation with the gospel and in nurturing them in a Christian worldview. Out of those prayerful concerns, AFA has birthed a new division we are calling Engage.

Responsibility to teach Biblical Perspective

biblical-worldview2-christianBecause we have been entrusted with the truth of God, Christians – more than anyone else – have a responsibility to know what’s happening in our nation and in the world. But sadly, many Christian Millennials do not know, and we want to change that.

We want to engage Millennials with a biblical perspective on the great moral issues of our time – sanctity of life, the definition of marriage, religious freedom, sexual purity, and, yes, politics and public policy.

So here is what our team of young AFA staffers came up with to promote Engage:

▶ An online magazine at
▶ A weekly radio program on the American Family Radio network (185 stations).
▶ An annual print magazine featuring some of the Engage website’s best articles.
▶ Regular social media content that challenges and encourages Millennials toward a biblical worldview.
▶ Engage Worldview Conference in Spring 2017. We want to take this conference on the road across America to reach thousands of young Christian people.

I hope what I’ve just shared with you is an encouragement. While AFA is standing for biblical values every day, part of our efforts are aimed at building up the next generation of Christians and getting them involved.

Wesley was right – we are going to need troops for future battles, and we need to get busy educating and recruiting young Christians to the cause of Christ for the good of our culture.

AFR, Truth for Youth give 63,174 Bibles

afa-truthforyouthOctober 2016 – For 15 years, American Family Radio has partnered with Revival Fires Ministries for one week each fall to provide free New Testaments for students to give to unsaved friends at school. In August, AFR listeners broke their own record (62,800 Bibles in 2015) by providing 63,174 Truth for Youth Bibles for Christian teens to give away.

“It’s a creative and effective way to get Bibles in the hands and hearts of unsaved teens,” said AFA president Tim Wildmon.

Worship positive for health and Keys to Happiness

christian-worshipOctober 2016 – Marripedia, an online social science encyclopedia of research, found that nearly 100 studies show that 81% of the time there is a “positive association between religious involvement and greater happiness, life satisfaction, morale, positive affect, or some other measure of wellbeing.” People who highly value their religious faith and frequently participate in it have reduced incidence of depression or suicide.

In addition, those who attend services at least weekly have lower mortality rates, and a reduced risk of infectious disease, diabetes, and cancer. They live an average of seven years longer than those who are not active in religion.

Regular church attendance also correlates with higher levels of happiness and sexual satisfaction in marriage. Those who attend weekly are seven times less likely to have a sexual partner outside marriage. And teens who are in church at least once per week are more likely to abstain from sex; only 51% of those 17-year-olds had had sex, compared to 70% of those who never attend., 6/15/16

Muslim employee infiltrates, defrauds World Vision

Beware of wolf among the sheep! Christian groups are not immune to infiltration.

afa-worldvision-infiltratedOctober 2016 – Mohammed El Halabi, director of World Vision’s Gaza branch since 2010, confessed to siphoning off $7.2 million a year from donations given to the humanitarian aid organization, according to Israeli authorities who arrested Halabi on June 15. Prosecutors said the money was used to fund Hamas, of which Halabi is a member who was was recruited for the purpose of infiltrating World Vision. Israel estimates that in the last six years, Halabi diverted 60% of World Vision’s Gaza budget, intended for work among children in the region and agricultural projects. Germany and Australia suspended funding for World Vision in Gaza after the allegations.

sheep-and-wolf“[Halabi’s crime] massively damages the trust necessary for aid work for the people in Gaza,” said German politician Volker Beck.

Planned Parenthood: one million deaths in 2015

abortion-planned-parenthood-fadedkidsOctober 2016 – Planned Parenthood global affiliates killed 964,325 babies in 2015, according to International Planned Parenthood Federation.

“If you were to read off the names of IPPF’s tiny victims – without sleeping, breaking, or pausing – it would take you almost two years,” stated. “In fact, you would never finish. By the time you finished reading the list of all the lives lost in 2015, IPPF’s abortion facilities would have added another two million lives to be accounted for.”

IPPF plans to escalate that endeavor. In Ghana, for example, advertising campaigns led to a 25% increase in clients in the country in 2014. And IPPF takes credit for influencing more than 800 policy and legislative changes in the last decade that push “sexual and reproductive rights” around the world., 7/17/16

Sequel to Christian Movie hit opens #4 in box office

AFA-Christian-movie2-God-not-deadChristian movie review

June 2016 – God’s Not Dead 2 came in fourth in box office sales during the first weekend of its April 1 release. It was out-grossed by Batman v. Superman (in its second week in theaters), Zootopia (fifth week), and My Big Fat Greek Wedding (second week). Miracles from Heaven, another Christian film in its third week at theaters, came in fifth.

God’s Not Dead 2 grossed $7.6 million in its opening weekend. Its forerunner opened to $8.6 million in 2014.

Other Christian movies opening in spring 2016 grossed the following amounts during their first weekends: Risen, $11.8 million; Young Messiah,$3.2 million; and Miracles from Heaven, $14.8 million.

At press time, GND2 has grossed $19.2 million., 4/8/16;, 3/30/16

Target Boycott

AFA-targetwarningJune 2016 – On April 21, AFA called for a boycott of Target stores after the retail giant publicized its policy to allow transgender individuals access to opposite-sex bathrooms and fitting rooms.

On its website, Target stated, “[We] welcome transgender team members and guests to use the restroom or fitting room facility that corresponds with their gender identity. … Everyone deserves to feel like they belong.”

“Target’s policy poses a threat to women and children,” said AFA president Tim Wildmon. “We think many customers will agree.”

AFA pointed to the very real danger posed by predators and voyeurs who would take advantage of the policy to prey on those who are vulnerable.

“We want to make it very clear that AFA does not believe the transgender community poses this danger to the wider public,” Wildmon said. “Rather, this misguided and reckless policy provides a possible gateway for predators who are out there.”

AFA also criticized the policy for ignoring customers who are simply uncomfortable with the presence of strangers of the opposite sex in such a personal setting.

At press time, more than one million people had signed the boycott pledge in its first eight days. Find more information at

Liberal Hypocrisy: Stars peg hypocrisy gauge

AFA-hypocrisy-scaleJune 2016 – North Carolina and Mississippi both passed landmark legislation this spring to protect citizens’ rights. North Carolina House Bill 2, commonly called the “bathroom bill,” overturned a previous ordinance in an effort to prevent individuals from being victimized by people of the opposite gender in public restrooms, locker rooms, and changing areas.

Mississippi HB 1523 seeks to protect business owners’ liberty to decline service based on religious convictions (such as a bakery not being fined by the state for declining to bake a cake for a gay wedding). Both bills have been lambasted by media stars as “anti-LGBTQ.” In addition, they have apparently prompted a number of businesses and entertainers to withdraw performances from the two states.

For example, in North Carolina, PayPal cancelled plans to open a payment center in Charlotte, and singer Bruce Springsteen cancelled a Greensboro concert. Following suit, singer Bryan Adams cancelled a show in Biloxi, Mississippi. In each scenario, the “discriminatory” bills were cited as reason for cancelling.

“Apparently, business can be refused on personal convictions only if those convictions are in line with the left-wing agenda,” observed AFA VP Buddy Smith., 4/11/16;, 4/12/16

Media Bias: Big 3 big on bias

AFA-abortion-media-biasJune 2016 – In 2014 and 2015, ABC, CBS, and NBC avoided any mention of abortion as dangerous or harmful to women, according to Media Research Center. After compiling data on news coverage of abortion by the three networks, MRC found that their focus was on abortion as a necessity for women’s health.

However, they gave no time to abortion clinic abuses and emergencies reported by sources such as LifeSiteNews and LifeNews. Only the scandal surrounding the videos on Planned Parenthood’s sale of baby body parts got a total 25 minutes of coverage among the three networks.

“They’ll report certain dangers … that make the abortion industry look good and the pro-life movement look bad,” MRC’s Katie Yoder said. “But they won’t talk about how abortion harms women.” (See related story here.), 3/29/16;, 3/23/16;, 1/14/16

Pope issues statement on families and life

June 2016 – In early April, the Vatican released Pope Francis’s 256-page exhortation to the church called Amoris Laetitia (Latin for “the joy of love”). This landmark document comes as a tour de force of the Pope’s practical theology regarding issues of sex, marriage, and family life. While Pope Francis has been seen by many as ushering in a new, more inclusive chapter for the Catholic church, this document makes no official changes to doctrine. It does, however, point to a less rigid relationship between the strict religious parameters of Catholic leadership and personal responsibility of laity.

“I understand those who prefer a more rigorous pastoral care which leaves no room for confusion,” Pope Francis noted. “But I sincerely believe that Jesus wants a church attentive to the goodness which the Holy Spirit sows in the midst of human weakness. We have been called to form consciences, not to replace them.”

Interestingly, Amoris Laetitia provides greater grace and inclusion to divorcees (who are often denied communion). However, the document repeatedly notes marriage as a union between a man and a woman and affirms the traditional and foundational pro-life view of the Catholic church: “So great is the value of a human life, and so inalienable the right to life of an innocent child growing in the mother’s womb, that no alleged right to one’s own body can justify a decision to terminate that life.”, 4/8/16;, 4/8/16

All that’s left is the stink

AFA-stinky-mediaJune 2016 – In a study examining TV ratings and content, Parents Television Council found that in a sample two-week stretch in 2014, there were zero hours of TV-G programming, a 100% decrease from 1997. On the other hand, TV-14 shows increased 160%, while TV-PG shows decreased 39%.

While the rating labels imply that both TV-PG and TV-14 ratings are suitable for children at different ages, PTC found the content of both is often equally unsuitable for children. Between 1997 and 2014, there was a 156% increase in sexual situations and coarse language in shows labeled TV-PG.

“The industry should have to answer why TV-G rated primetime series are extinct, why the lines between TV-PG and TV-14 shows are blurred, why more adult content is being shown on TV-PG shows, and why nudity and violence are increasing on broadcast TV overall,” said PTC president Tim Winter., 4/6/16

AFA’s Patriot Project helps train young leaders

AFA-train-christian-leadersMarch 2016 – Are you tired of politicians in Washington saying one thing and doing another, or simply doing nothing? If you’re like me, then the answer is yes. The question now is: What can we do to take back America from a dysfunctional political system? The answer: We need to train up and equip the next generation of Christians to be leaders on the most pressing moral issues of our day. What if I told you we were already doing that?

In July 2014, I attended Patriot Academy, an intensive three-day event that trains students ages 16-25 to become true patriots. Leadership, public speaking, and effective communication skills are developed. As a participant in Patriot Academy, I learned these invaluable skills.

Students also learn what it’s like to work as a legislator, from sitting in committees to filing legislation. Since 2003, Rick Green, founder of PA, and his team have trained young adults in the biblical principles that guided America’s Founding Fathers. Patriot Academy is today’s premier political leadership training in the nation, guiding young men and women to effectively lead change in America.

Not only does this program train students but it also offers what is called a “Citizen Track.” This gives adults over the age of 25 an option to attend the academy and learn the essentials of making a difference in their communities. Not only will they learn how bills are written but also how to effectively lobby elected representatives and get patriots elected in their states.

The summer academies are scheduled in state capitals in Idaho, Arizona, Florida, Delaware, and Texas. (See below.)

If we want to take back America through the democratic process, we must train our young people, and that is what Patriot Academy does. Many Patriot Academy graduates have already been elected to public office.

In Romans 13:1 Paul says, “Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God.” If we are to submit to governing authorities, we must do all in our power to have godly men and women leading our government.

On Tuesday March 8, American Family Radio will give listeners an opportunity to invest in the next generation. AFA Journal readers may listen online at You can sponsor a student at this year’s academy. Of course, a gift of any amount will help some worthy student attend. If you are interested in attending an academy, you can find more details at

▶ Arizona – June 9-11
▶ Florida – June 20-22

AFA2013expendituresAmerican Family Association earns highest charity rating

In recent analysis by Charity Navigator, the premier charity evaluator in the U.S., AFA again earned the highest possible rating. A letter from Charity Navigator, addressed to AFA president Tim Wildmon, commends AFA for its good stewardship over the resources entrusted to it by its supporters.

We are proud to announce American Family Association has earned a 4-star rating. Receiving four out of a possible four stars indicates that your organization adheres to good governance and other best practices that minimize the chance of unethical activities and consistently executes its mission in a fiscally responsible way.

 Newspapers reject Life advertisement

AFAabortionadHeroic Media, a national pro-life organization, created an ad showing an adult hand holding a 20- to 24-week-old baby accompanied by the text, “This child has no voice, which is why it depends on yours.” The Chicago Tribune, USA Today and the LA Times rejected the ad.

Joe Young, executive director of Heroic Media, said, “I am disturbed that these papers run article after article promoting the notion that abortion is a victimless act without consequences. The fact remains, children who are unique individuals, never again to be duplicated, are being killed in the most violent way imaginable, and they feel the excruciating pain of that death.”

After the rejection, Heroic Media submitted a new ad with a different photo of a 20-week-old baby in utero. The Chicago Tribune agreed to run the second ad as long as it was clear it was a paid advertisement., 7/8/13

Rest easy – atheists protecting America

Newer U.S. passports contain quotes from notable Americans, and some of those quotes are a problem for Freedom From Religion Foundation. FFRF recently complained to the U.S. State Department (which issues passports), complaining that quotes mentioning God violate the Establishment Clause.

AFAnewspassportObjectionable quotes include Thomas Jefferson saying, “The God who gave us life, gave us liberty at the same time.” Another, from Abraham Lincoln, says, “That this great nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom.”

Mat Staver of Liberty Counsel said the quotes “never established a religion during the 200-plus years that they’ve been in existence and are certainly not establishing a religion now. Just because the Freedom from Religion Foundation is offended does not give them any right to bring suit and rewrite our history.”

Lt. Col. chided for comments

Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Alaska is also facing atheist ire. Lt. Col. Kenneth Reyes wrote a commentary titled “No Atheists in Foxholes: Chaplains Gave all in World War II” and posted it on the base’s website. The commentary told the story of a Catholic priest who died of starvation after giving his food to soldiers. The priest coined the phrase “no atheists in foxholes.” Michael Weinstein, head of Military Religious Freedom Foundation, read the commentary and demanded the Air Force punish Reyes because Weinstein felt the piece was an “anti-secular diatribe.”

Later the base republished the article with a disclaimer stating beliefs posted by individual authors do not reflect the beliefs of the military.

Praying mom banned from school grounds

FFRF succeeded in punishing the mother of two high school students’ after she began arriving at their school around 7 a.m. to pray over the campus. She started the practice after a report that bullets were found in the school bathroom. When the mother’s actions came to light, FFRF sent an open letter to the school board requesting “copies of any meeting minutes or any sort of documents which gave this woman permission to pray on school property.”

Alliance for Defending Freedom represented Lizarda Urena, the mother. ADF said, “Students and community members that are allowed to come on campus and participate in a neutral thing are allowed to express religious viewpoints. The students know it’s the mother and her own speech, something the First Amendment protects, and that it is not the school mandating this woman to do it.” Regardless, the school banned the mother from praying in front of the school., 7/29/13, 8/6/13;, 6/26/13

FBI rescues 105 kids from human traffickers

The Federal Bureau of Investigation launched a 72-hour nationwide operation focused on breaking a country-wide network of sex traffickers and rescuing victims. At the end of the three-day raid, 105 children aged 9 to 17 were rescued, and 150 pimps were arrested.

Ronald Hosko, assistant director of the FBI’s criminal division, coordinated with 230 different agencies around the country to make the raid a success. Operation Cross Country is the most extensive of its type and was conducted under the FBI Innocence Lost Initiative. The initiative is responsible for rescuing 2,700 children since it began in 2003.

Once the raids were finished, officers partnered with many child placement services including Bethany Christian Services, which received several of the victims. Bill Blacquiere, head of the organization, said, “One of the things that we do is provide a trauma center for young victims where we counsel them. All our staffers are Christian. We recruit Christian foster and adoptive families. Part of our healing and restoration is to expose the children to the Word of God, the love of God and to tell them even though they’ve been in a horrible situation that they still have a heavenly Father who cares very much for them and wants to restore them to a full life.”, 7/29/13;, 8/2/13
