The adage “a picture is worth a thousand words” suggests complexity lends itself to simplicity in a single image. Those recognizing the national crisis at our southern border will understand then the allegory of artist Jon McNaughton’s painting “National Emergency.”

In the portrait, thousands of illegal immigrants, off in the distance, approach the U.S. border.

In the right forefront stands a solemn President Donald Trump, hands clasped, his eyes locked on a doll on the ground discarded by a child, perhaps one whom illegals kidnapped seeking their free ticket to remain in America.

In contrast, to the portrait’s left forefront stands a jubilant group of Democratic Party leaders. Several hold, as McNaughton explains, “the different flags that represent the countries they are more aligned with in terms of protecting their interests but not the American people’s interest.”

Democrats portrayed by McNaughton include: at center stage, Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) – the latter with her arm triumphantly thrust up into the air – both holding Mexico’s flag; Senator Bernie Sanders (D-VT), who never met a communist he didn’t like, holding the flag of Communist China; former President Barack Obama, who told the United Nations in 2016 America would need to “accept constraints” on its sovereignty to achieve the UN’s goals, clutching the UN flag; and several other high profile members of the far left crowd: Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA), Rep Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), Rep Alexandria Ocasio Cortez (D-NY), Rep Ilhan Omar (D-MINN), Rep Adam Schiff (D-CA) and Hillary Clinton.

trump: illegal immigration unfairMost telling is what Democrats are standing upon – a large, trampled American flag. Perhaps with a final stroke of his brush, McNaughton conveyed one last hidden message: the skies above are filled with dark, ominous storm clouds.

The portrait captured McNaughton’s intention, explaining: “It truly is a national emergency what is happening on our border. And I wanted to make that very clear in this painting, who our enemies truly are. …(They) are trying to stop President Trump from doing the right thing: to protect the American people.”

McNaughton’s portrait was timely. Soon after its release, we saw far-left protestors tear down the U.S. flag at an ICE facility in Aurora, Colorado, replacing it with a Mexican one. Yet Democratic leaders have been unwilling to condemn the act.

Race Card

Despite Democrats playing the race card (i.e., claiming Trump seeks to keep America white, promoting “a brown menace”), the issue is not racial. The issue is the burden – financial, human (crime, transmittable diseases, etc.) and humanitarian, we will face.

Failing to address it now, we will discover the storm clouds McNaughton portrayed were not just passing through.

Skeptics who believe a border wall will not stop illegals from entering the United States may want to look at what’s happening in Hungary

On the day its border fence was completed, the influx of illegals entering Hungary went down from 6,353 per day to 870 the next. For the remainder of that month, illegal border crossings were steadily below 40 per day, officials said.

They don’t even try,” a local border guard told The Daily Caller News Foundation. “We haven’t had a single Muslim migrant in six months.”

Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s pledge to stop illegals from flowing into the country appears to be a spectacular success.

Hungary’s 96-mile long, 14-foot tall double-line fence includes several layers of razor-wire capable of delivering electric shocks. The barrier features cameras, heat sensors and loudspeakers ready to tell migrants they’re about to breakHungarian law if they as much as touch the fence, the DC report said.

Nearly every police officer in Hungary is part of a rotation to monitor the border fence at all times. Temporary military bases house the police while they do their rotation.

Additionally, Hungary will train and pay more than 1,000 volunteers to deploy as “border hunters”.

Illegals who are caught are arrested and dropped off on the Serbian side of the fence. They don’t get a chance to apply for asylum unless they do so at a “transit zone” where they are held in housing containers while their cases get processed, the report said.

In September 2016, thousands of migrants streamed across the border every day as they made their way north to Austria, Germany and Scandinavia.

“It was an invasion,” Laszlo Toroczkai, the mayor of Asotthalom, told the Daily Caller. “Illegal immigration is a crime in a normal country. It’s not a normal thing to break into a country.”

By mid-year it was well beyond 100,000 people who came across,” said Zoltan Kovacs, a spokesman for the Hungarian government. “You should at least have the ability to handle what’s going on.”

Kovacs added: “You might not like it, it’s not a nice thing, but … the only way to stop illegal border crossings is [to] first build a fence, man it, equip it, and also, in parallel, build up your capabilities in terms of legal confines, legal circumstancesto be able to handle what is coming.”

It’s no surprise the mainstream U.S. media refuses to report this story to the American public. Can you imagine how support for a Southern border wall would spike?

The Trump Administration is treating the crisis on our southern border as the true national emergency that it is. Last night, Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen explained how U.S. law enforcement has broken up so-called “child recycling rings,” a horrid practice where smugglers kidnap children, give them to adults to cross the border posing as a family, and pass them back to other illegal immigrants, repeating the process.

“The smugglers . . . they are sicker than we have ever seen before,” Secretary Nielsen says.

A video published by ABC News shows a group of migrants abusing young children who appear to be in no imminent danger by forcing them under a razor-wire lined border fence in a water-filled ditch. The children scream in terror as the adults force them into the cold water and submerge them while passing them under the concertino wire-lined border barrier.

“The blades of the concertina wire ensnare shirts and jackets of asylum seekers who are dunked into the 55-degree water, wading through the drainage ditch just yards from the San Juan del Rio Colorado border crossing,” ABC News’ Matt Gutman wrote. “One cannot easily make out faces, only wet fists gripping the steel slats and the piercing screams of children. On the other side, U.S. Border Patrol agents are filming and shouting in Spanish, ‘Go back…don’t do this. Look at the child! Hey! Be careful with the child! Be careful with the child!’”

Our Constitution was written so that mistakes at the founding could be corrected. The vast majority of people knew slavery at the founding was untenable, but they needed the union in order to fight the Revolutionary War. They needed the southern states. They needed unity to do that so they had to accept slavery, but they built in safeguards to wipe it out, and it happened in 1868 when the 14th Amendment passed.

It begins this way: “All persons born or naturalized in the United States and subject to the jurisdiction thereof are citizens of the U.S. and of the state wherein they reside.” It was clearly intended to be referring to slaves and their descendants. The parts that birthright citizenship, uh, freaks have to delete are “naturalized” and “subject to the jurisdiction thereof.” You are not naturalized and you are not subject to the U.S. jurisdiction if you’re here illegally! You cannot be!

Okay, a little bit more background on the 14th Amendment here ’cause it’s gonna be relevant as the issue going forward. Again, it was added after the Civil War. Its purpose was to overrule the Dred Scott Decision! Which was a horrible decision. Dred Scott sanctioned slavery. Roger Taney was the chief justice, forever immortalized in infamy. It held that black slaves were not citizens. So Congress got into gear and passed the 14th Amendment.

It guaranteed that freed slaves would have all the privileges of citizenship by providing, quote, “all persons born or naturalized in the United States and subject to the jurisdiction thereof are citizens of the United States and of the state wherein they reside,” which means the drafters of the 14th Amendment had no intention of conferring citizenship on the children of aliens who happened to be born here. In fact, the very author of the citizenship cause, Sen. Jacob Howard of Michigan, expressly said…

This is why the original intent of founding documents is so important. Quote, “This,” meaning the 14th Amendment… “This will not, of course, include persons born in the United States who are foreigners, aliens, who belong to the families of ambassadors or foreign ministers…” It was expressly intended to confer citizenship to slaves and their descendants. There was an 1884 case, Elk v. Wilkins. The Supreme Court ruled the 14th Amendment did not even confer citizenship on Native Americans because they were subject to tribal jurisdiction, not U.S. jurisdiction.

Well, an illegal alien here is not subject to U.S. jurisdiction. They’re under the jurisdiction of where they came from if they’re here illegally.

Guess when this all changed? In the 1960s! Concomitant with Senator Kennedy wanting to reopen… We had shut down all immigration from ’21 to ’65. Along comes Senator Kennedy in the pre-Chappaquiddick days wanting to reopen it for the express purpose of making sure the Democrat Party always had a permanent underclass of voters dependent on them and the government.

And, by the way, and even according to our leftist brothers and sisters at NPR report no nation in Europe confers birthright citizenship. Liberals love to say we should emulate Europe, right? Okay!

I was a twelfth grade American history teacher for 25 years and I finally had to leave because the revisionist history was becoming more than I could handle. I started writing my own classes, courses, because I couldn’t handle how they had revised American history. But the reason I called was the topic of immigration. Immigration, if it’s in the book, probably gets about one paragraph.

What most people don’t understand is when these millions of people came over through Ellis Island, we didn’t just open our arms and say, “Come on in,” the way the Democrats want to do now. These people were given a thorough examination by the ship, especially looking at their eyes. They take a device and flick up the upper eyelid, and if you had a disease called trachoma, you were automatically let go. They made you walk up and down steps to make sure you were strong and were not winded.

Now, once the ship doctor performed his examination, you were put on the ship and you were sent to Ellis Island, where they gave you a second examination doing the trachoma exam once again, walking up and down the steps. And if you didn’t make it, you were sent back. About 2% of the people were sent back. And the reason why it was so low is because the ship doctor really did a thorough exam. If you were sent back, the ship had to pay for your passage back to Europe, so they wanted to make sure. We did not want anyone that could not work, was not healthy, and was not strong.

CALLER: But we did not want people who would be on welfare. We did not want those people. We wanted only strong, healthy people. That’s been totally left out of history books, and I can’t tell you how much it frustrates me to listen to these Democrats talk about how wonderful we were when we welcomed everybody. Not true. I have a 9-year-old grandson, and I just shudder to think about the kind of history he’s gonna be learning. I’m giving him, for Christmas, one of your books.

CALLER: Because I think, “Where’s he gonna get it?” He’s not gonna learn it from his own history books. They’re all revised. They give a paragraph maybe to Benjamin Franklin and —

RUSH: Well, try a paragraph to Abraham Lincoln! John Silber at Boston University way back in the nineties did a survey of the most popular high school history textbook and found one paragraph in reference to Abraham Lincoln. One paragraph! There were pages devoted to Bill Clinton, for example, in an American history book. The name that you want to know is Howard Zinn.

Howard Zinn, as a textbook writer, is a quasi-socialist-Marxist, and he somehow has finagled. The vast majority of textbooks purchased for use in American public schools have been written by this guy. But you know, you reminded me of something.

I really… I’m glad that you got through to remind us about Ellis Island. Not only, by the way, were they checking people’s health. They were determining whether or not people actually wanted to be Americans. It was a restrictive process. Now, we were a much newer and younger country then, and we had an entirely different attitude about immigration and growth, and it was required that immigrants assimilate, and it was required that they be healthy.

But more importantly, the immigrants who were allowed in had to demonstrate that they wanted to be Americans. They had to demonstrate that they loved America. You had to want to be an American.

You had to learn about American history. You had to promise that you were going to do your best to learn the English language. It was restrictive because it was predicated and based on the fact that we were in charge of who was going to live here.

My parents, legal immigrants from the Philippines, were screened for a panoply of communicable and infectious diseases.

My husband’s great-great grandparents and their relatives from Ukraine underwent thorough medical and physical exams at Ellis Island immediately after disembarking from their arduous transatlantic journeys. A team of doctors checked for everything from eye disease and muscle weakness to heart conditions, ringworm and mental deficiencies. Those who failed were rejected and ejected. No appeals, no apologies, no amnesty.

I find it especially bizarre that some of the same outspoken, big-government advocates for vaccinating every American citizen, young or old, against every possible condition, from the flu to chickenpox to HPV, are the same types now howling over the commonsense idea that we should protect ourselves from foreign diseases.

The Immigration and Nationality Act mandates medical screening exams for legal immigrants and refugees from around the world. The tests are performed by authorized physicians in either the applicants’ countries of origin or in the United States. The process includes “a physical examination, mental health evaluation, syphilis serologic testing … and chest radiography followed by acid-fast bacillus smears and sputum cultures if the chest radiograph is consistent with tuberculosis (TB).”

Legal immigrants and refugees must provide mandatory proof of vaccination for measles, mumps, rubella, polio, tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis, hepatitis A and B, rotavirus, meningococcus, chicken pox, pneumonia and seasonal flu.

Moreover, the Centers for Disease Control, not Fox News or the Trump White House or any other evil conservatives, reports that “most experts agree that testing for TB, hepatitis B, and HIV should be performed for most new arrivals to the United States. Clinicians should also make a habit of ensuring that this screening has been done for every new non-U.S.-born patient they see, regardless of time since the person’s arrival.”

Actual public health experts across the Southwest have reported rises in drug-resistant TB and dengue fever. In June, Australian public health researchers reported that “scabies, long considered a disease of the past in the developed world, is making its way back.” The scientists pointed to mass global migration as a leading factor, noting scabies outbreaks among refugees to the European Union and along America’s southern border.

And in Germany, federal epidemiologists reported that since opening the floodgates to migrants in 2015, data show “increased incidences in Germany of adenoviral conjunctivitis, botulism, chicken pox, cholera, cryptosporidiosis, dengue fever, echinococcosis, enterohemorrhagic E. coli, giardiasis, haemophilus influenza, Hantavirus, hepatitis, hemorrhagic fever, HIV/AIDS, leprosy, louse-borne relapsing fever, malaria, measles, meningococcal disease, meningoencephalitis, mumps, paratyphoid, rubella, shigellosis, syphilis, toxoplasmosis, trichinellosis, tuberculosis, tularemia, typhus and whooping cough.”

It’s simply insane to argue we should turn a blind eye to the health status of law-breaking aliens. And it’s treachery, yes, treachery, for so-called journalists to use their platforms to blithely smear those who dare to question open-borders orthodoxy or report the highly inconvenient facts.

The overall responsibility of our nation is to protect her citizens from foreign invasion and crimes against other citizens, and to uphold Constitutional law. We already have laws governing immigration and citizenship.

No matter what your religion, you are still subject to the laws of the land which are in place to protect civilized society. Most religions are generally peace-loving, abiding by moral laws based on the Ten Commandments. Other than Islam (and in some countries, atheism, which is also a religion), I don’t know of other religions which condone rape, murder, deceit, and the suppression of free speech.      American citizens have freedom of religion, as long as they don’t infringe on the rights and freedoms of others. Churches can excommunicate a member for church-state1-madison-quoteimmoral conduct, but cannot put a person in prison. If someone commits a crime that endangers society, such as stealing or murder, it is no longer a Church issue—it becomes the jurisdiction of the State. That person is subject to the laws of the land, no matter what his religion. We have seen Christians put in prison for committing crimes. That is as it should be for Muslims as well, or for any other religion. The minute your religion violates another person’s life or property, it becomes political.

Furthermore, whereas citizens are required to abide by the law, illegal immigrants are already outside the law. The policy of Open Borders should not even be debatable, as it is inherently illegal.

Immigration: thinking biblically

bible-word-of-godAs we wrestle with such weighty matters, it is critical that Christians turn to Scripture for guidance as much as possible.

Some Christians believe the Bible is clear on these matters, citing Old Testament passages such as Leviticus 19:34: “The foreigner residing among you must be treated as your native-born. Love them as yourself, for you were foreigners in Egypt. I am the LORD your God” (NIV).

From the New Testament, some Christians argue that the command to love your neighbor requires America – a so-called Christian nation – to help those in need.

However, if we are concerned with “accurately handling the word of truth” (2 Timothy 2:15*), here are some things to remember:

  1. Biblical passages that address individual Christians – or the church – don’t necessarily apply to governments.
    There is no doubt that Christ commanded Christians to be generous, to care for those in need, and to love our neighbor.

However, does this apply to government programs? May Christians who have the power to vote – as do those in the West – use that power to bring the government into the equation? Absolutely.

welfare-government-charity-madisonHowever, must Christians vote to do so? And if Christians do vote to do so, how much government activity should we demand? How much tax money should be allocated? What sort of programs must we call for? Food stamps only? Job training programs? Is there ever a time when someone should cease getting aid?

These questions are vexing, but here’s the problem: At this point the Bible ceases to be a guide.

Instead, at this point it becomes a matter of sound judgment, not biblical injunction. Christians, like everyone else, make their case in the public square and attempt to persuade others to join them.

Here is the principle: Biblically speaking, the government is not the same as the individual Christian, and it is not the same as the church. Therefore, believers must be careful not to apply to government Scriptures intended for the church.

For example, Jesus said, “For if you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you” (Matthew 6:14).

ImmigrationCriminalsSo, we must conclude that individual Christians are to forgive their enemies. But must we also conclude that governments should forgive their enemies? Must we demand that criminals convicted of crimes be released and not sent to prison?

The application of this principle is that individual Christians should help refugees who are in our nation. But the issue of who we allow in – and how many – is not a biblical matter. It is a political matter.

  1. Understanding the proper biblical function of government is critical to this debate.
    Many Christians fail to understand the purpose of government in a fallen world, and they act as if the matter is irrelevant to Christians focused on the eternal kingdom. But God has ordained government to serve His purposes on the earth as surely as He has ordained the church to carry out its assigned role.

Romans 13 makes plain the fact that governments derive their authority from God and are considered ministers or servants of Yahweh (vv. 1, 4). They help order human existence, represent the authority of God Himself, restrain evil, and reward good.

Therefore one must assume that a government has both the right and the responsibility before God to maintain order. Surely that would include providing for national borders – which might require restricting immigration and the flow of refugees across them.

More than Platitudes

trojan-horse-isisU.S. ever seem to wrestle with this matter. Invariably their responses are: “Yes, of course, the government should establish secure borders and enforce laws, but ….”

Such a proclamation is not helpful. In fact, it does not wrestle with the subtleties of the issue at all. A viable resolution requires more than platitudes.

We need these questions answered: Should a government allow every refugee who wants to enter the country to do so? No? Then exactly how should a government decide who and how many?

If a Christian insists that “love your neighbor” requires us (as a country) to accept, say, more Syrian refugees, then that Christian cannot restrict the refugee process at all. The moment a Christian says a government can be loving and restrict the refugee process, the Christian has then admitted that the political process must take place. In other words, the government must be allowed to do its job.

But if it does its job and restricts the refugee process, that Christian cannot argue that the country is no longer being loving. Why? Because the Bible does not quantify how many refugees a country must allow. Once again, that is a matter of sound judgment, rather than a biblical command.

  1. Old Testament passages dealing with immigration, refugees, or foreigners in Israel do not apply to our current political debates.
    It is clear that Old Testament passages (e.g., Leviticus 19:34) required God’s people to love and treat respectfully non-Jews who were living among them or passing through.

However, such verses merely assume that certain people would fall into those categories because transient peoples were common in the ancient world. Virtually all societies, and especially those in that part of the world – in the middle of major trade routes – were quite used to seeing trade caravans passing through and foreigners who stayed for a few months conducting business.

These biblical references instruct God’s people to treat lovingly those who were already passing through. The more likely parallel would be: How should Christians today treat legal immigrants who are in our midst?

  1. Passages that apply to Israel do not always apply to other nations like the U.S.
    It is probably safe to assume that Leviticus 19:34 requires Christians not only to help the foreigners already in their midst, but also to press their government to do likewise.

israel_flagSometimes the moral force behind a commandment given to Israel is universal in its application. But this is not always the case. Great care should be exercised when attempting to stretch a passage that might apply only to Israel and make it universally binding.

2 Chronicles 7:14 is a classic example of a promise made to Israel that evangelicals often stretch to apply to America – or some other nation.

There are certainly principles in 2 Chronicles 7:14 that should encourage American Christians to repent and pray and seek revival for their land. But it is not a covenant promise from God. He has not obligated Himself to save America as He obligated Himself to respond to the prayers of His people in the Old Testament.

I respectfully disagree with Mr. Vitagliano on this particular point. America is a choice land, with a Constitution created by men raised up by God for that purpose. References to Zion may even include America. Isaiah prophesied for all time, especially for our time. He said, “Out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem.” (Isaiah 2:3) God is the same yesterday, today, and forever. He keeps His promises; He favors the righteous, but not any particular race. He has already blessed America greatly because of our Judeo-Christian culture. Why wouldn’t He honor, even empower, our efforts for a revival? ~C.D.

As the immigration debate demonstrates, there is nothing simple about trying to interpret the Bible in the often overheated atmosphere of the culture wars of 2015. If we are to sort out the implications of such issues, it will require that all of us in the body of Christ jump into the debate.

The worst thing we can do is to accuse our brothers and sisters of disobeying Christ or not loving their neighbors when we disagree. Unity in the body of Christ is imperative if we are to be the light He commands us to be.

Police brought in reinforcements from other German states to prevent trouble at the PEGIDA event Sunday and at smaller counter-protests. They reported no significant incidents, news agency dpa reported.
