HHS rule defunding Planned Parenthood moves forward

defund planned parenthoodSeptember 2019 – In a 3-0 opinion, the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled to allow implementation of a May 2018 U.S. Department of Health and Human Services administrative rule that effectively deprives Planned Parenthood of $50-60 million annually in family planning grants.

Under the new directive, effective in late August 2019, abortion organizations will lose Title X funding unless family planning and abortion operations are financially separated within 180 days and physically separated within one year.

trump defunds planned parenthood“The Protect Life Rule does not cut family planning funding by a single dime,” said Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of the pro-life Susan B. Anthony List, “and instead, directs tax dollars to entities that provide health care to women, but do not perform abortions.”

A recent Marist poll found that 54% of Americans oppose taxpayer funding of abortion. However, Congress has failed to defund Planned Parenthood of Medicaid reimbursements, the significant majority of the taxpayer dollars the organization receives.

Young adults grow less tolerant of LGBTs

young Adults less tolerant of LGBT graphSeptember 2019 – Young adults are typically assumed to be open-minded, but Harris Poll results released in June indicate Americans age 18-34 are growing less open to spending time with LGBT acquaintances.

According to the annual Accelerating Acceptance report, young adults who feel comfortable interacting with those who consider themselves LGBT decreased from 63% in 2016 to 53% in 2017 and 45% in 2018.

Slight majority favors separate bathrooms

separate gender bathroomsSeptember 2019 – Bucking the cultural trend to accept transgenderism as the new normal, a recent Gallup poll found that slightly over half of adults surveyed (51%) favored public restroom policies that distinguish between men and women according to their birth gender.

Politically, the poll showed that 78% of Republicans believe that men and women – according to their birth gender – should be required to use their respective bathroom facilities. Only 27% of Democrats deemed that distinction necessary.

However, the wide-ranging poll on LGBT issues also indicated broad support overall for pro-homosexual initiatives.

Trump sends first U.S. delegates to Holocaust remembrance

July 2019 – On May 2, for the first time since Poland’s annual March of the Living began in 1988, U.S. delegates attended. President Donald Trump sent the U.S. delegation to Poland to participate in the Holocaust Remembrance event. Led by U.S. ambassador to Israel David Friedman, the group toured the World War II Nazi concentration camp complex.

Then, they walked alongside students and Holocaust survivors in the 1.5-mile trek from the infamous gates of Auschwitz to the nearby death camp of Birkenau. For thousands of Holocaust victims, this path follows the last walk they ever took. The march educates attendees on the suffering and loss of the Holocaust while celebrating the continuity of Jewish life.

Trump protects health workers’ religious beliefs

July 2019 – On May 2, President Donald Trump announced a conscience rule protecting health care workers and hospitals which have personal or religious objections to some health procedures. This conscience rule is designed to protect those who want no ties to abortion, assisted suicide, and sterilizations.

It will be enforced by the Office for Civil Rights. Institutions receiving funds from federal programs will have to certify they comply with these laws.

Over two dozen laws already affected medical workers and institutions by protecting religious or conscience beliefs. However, the Obama administration ignored these laws and received on average one complaint per year. The Trump administration is enforcing laws on the books and received over 300 complaints in 2018.

The president’s latest announcement sparked immediate liberal backlash, e.g., the City of San Francisco has already filed a lawsuit claiming health services might be at risk due to caregivers’ religious beliefs.

Religious freedom disrespected in many countries

July 2019 – Nearly 40% of 75 countries listed in a new report threaten the religious liberty of their residents. Details are included in an April release by Family Research Council’s Center for Religious Liberty. Through legal and cultural support for apostasy, blasphemy, and/or anti-conversion laws, these nations threaten their citizens’ freedom to choose or change one’s faith.

The report adds to the evidence documented in recent years in a variety of studies that show governmental and social hostility toward religious believers is increasing worldwide.

Apostasy laws, according to the report, punish people who convert away from Islam, thus preventing Muslims from freely choosing their faith.

Although largely unenforced worldwide, blasphemy laws in Muslim majority countries frequently are used against minorities – “often with no evidence – to settle unrelated disputes and vendettas.”

Anti-conversion laws prohibit people from converting to another religion. The CRL report said these laws are often used by governments in the Hindu and Buddhist world “to maintain a majority of the population with their preferred religion.”

The study findings show “a significant portion of the world’s population living under regimes that do not respect religious freedom,” said Travis Weber, director of the CRL.

Research reveals global shifts on diversity, religion, family

July 2019 – In 2018, Pew Research Center surveyed 30,133 people in 27 countries about their perception of national shifts from 1998 to 2018 relative to the family structure and ethnic, religious, and racial diversity and impact.

The research revealed a prevailing global view that diversity and gender equality have increased, but ties to family and religion have decreased. While considerable variation exists concerning whether the changes were perceived as positive or negative, large majorities in most countries say the weakening of family relationships is a “bad thing.”

Abortion Statistics— numbers steadily decreasing

January-February 2018 – The Centers for Disease Control released a November 2017 report citing 2014 abortion rates (most recent available) in the U.S. According to CDC, abortion in the U.S. had fallen to its lowest rate of occurrence since 1971, when it was legal in only six states. From 2013 to 2014 alone, the numbers dropped 2%.

However, while CDC requests abortion data from the central health agencies of every state, as well as the District of Columbia and New York City, the federal government does not require that the agencies report. Therefore, CDC figures run short. For instance, in 2014, CDC received data from 49 reporting areas rather than 52.

Nonetheless, the pro-abortion Guttmacher Institute, known to have more inclusive data, also reported a decrease of nearly 4% from 2013 to 2014.

According to their numbers, abortion rates have not been lower since 1975, just two years after Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court case that brought about legal abortion nationwide.

Planned Parenthood defunding intact

January-February 2018 – On November 13, the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals rejected a request to reconsider its decision to uphold Arkansas’s defunding of Planned Parenthood.

Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson ended the state’s Medicaid contract with Planned Parenthood in 2015. In August 2017, a three-judge panel of the court annulled a federal judge’s preliminary injunction that had temporarily prevented Arkansas from suspending Medicaid payments for Planned Parenthood services.

Middle school parents fight Planned Parenthood sex education

January-February 2018 – When the Cumberland County, North Carolina, school board approved a Planned Parenthood sex ed program for its middle schools, parents fought back. Hundreds of parents complained about the Comprehensive Sex Education curriculum that assumes all children are sexually active, and focuses on sexual preferences, LGBTQ education, and contraception. (See AFA Journal, 9/17.)

“I don’t need somebody else teaching my kids … the myths and facts about sexuality.” parent Nick Quello said. “That’s something the parents need to do. I just don’t think that’s appropriate for a 12-year-old, whether it be a boy or a girl. The school board needs to stay out of our homes.”

After the outpouring of parental complaints, the Cumberland County Board of Education decided to hold off implementing the program, pending review of the curriculum.

As the nation’s largest abortion provider, PP continues to face threats of taxpayer funding cuts and FBI investigation following years of numerous scandals, including Medicaid fraud, allegations of child sex abuse cover-up, and alleged profiting from the sale of aborted baby body parts.

Planned Parenthood blatantly targets America’s minority women

January-February 2018 – On October 31, 2017, Planned Parenthood tweeted, “If you’re a Black woman in America, it’s statistically safer to have an abortion than to carry a pregnancy to term or give birth.”

Margaret Sanger, founder of PP, stated in 1926 that “colored people are like weeds and are to be exterminated.” Ninety-one years later, the abortion giant continues to target racial minorities.

In 2012, 79% of PP’s surgical abortion clinics were located within walking distance of African American or Hispanic/Latino neighborhoods. And the targeting has accelerated with Planned Parenthood’s 25 mega centers built since 2004. Alarmingly, 88% (22 of 25) of them target women of color.

Planned Parenthood closes more centers

March 2017 – The American Life League annual survey shows that in 2016, 27 Planned Parenthood locations closed. The closings were offset with eight new centers, resulting in a net loss of 19.

“They’re now down to 624 facilities across the country from a high of 938,” said ALL executive director Jim Sedlak. “So they’ve lost one-third of the facilities.”

Although figures related to services provided by the abortion giant are not yet available for 2015 and 2016, the number of services provided in the six previous years (from 2009 to 2014) decreased significantly: 63% fewer cancer screenings, 56% fewer breast exams, 70% fewer Pap smear tests, and 30% fewer abortions.

In 2016, Planned Parenthood received over $553 million of taxpayer money from the federal government.

Fastest growing churches hold to literal interpretation of the Scripture

March 2017 – According to a five-year study published in Review of Religious Research, an internationally respected journal, the fastest growing churches are those that hold to a literal interpretation of the Bible, including teachings on heaven and hell.

“If we are talking solely about what belief system is more likely to lead to numerical growth among Protestant churches,” said David Haskell, lead researcher of the Canadian study, “the evidence suggests conservative Protestant theology is the clear winner.”

Clergy and worshippers in growing churches experienced greater participation in regular Bible reading and prayer.

Additionally, with respect to outsiders, an unwavering message with clear boundaries is a drawing factor.

Social media linked to depression

March 2017 –It has become cliché to see young people staring at their phones scrolling social media pages. But all that scrolling can have a negative effect on the way they see the world and themselves.

According to a 2016 study sponsored by the National Institute for Mental Health, social media can have a detrimental impact on the mental and emotional well-being of young adults.

The study polled 1,787 adults ages 19 to 32. Researchers inquired about time spent on social media, number of visits per week, and other related issues.

“It is human nature to compare ourselves to others,” said Mark Widdowson, a writer for the website Mashable. “Sometimes comparisons can be a way to inspire ourselves to improve in some way, but, more often than not – especially when someone is feeling down or is prone to depression – the comparisons become negative and erode self-esteem.”

Political Correctness: Masculinity dangerous … really?

afa-masculinity2December 2016 – A student advertisement for an event at Claremont College in California read, “Masculinity can be extremely toxic to our mental health, both to the people who are pressured to perform it and the people who are inevitably influenced by it.”

As writer LaShawn Barber for World Magazine pointed out, such language used in relation to women would be described as misogyny.

Students stated that the event was comprised of mostly women, and that the consensus was that masculinity “is harmful to those who express it and those affected by it.”

Churches take stand for Religious Freedom

afa-transgender-restroomDecember 2016 – Alliance Defending Freedom has filed a lawsuit on behalf of four Massachusetts churches over a new law that allows individuals legal access to bathrooms or locker rooms based on perceived gender identification versus biological sex. The state has identified churches as places of public accommodation and therefore bound by the law.

Plaintiffs are Horizon Christian Fellowship, Abundant Life Church, House of Destiny Ministries, and Faith Christian Fellowship in Haverville. Defendants are members of the Massachusetts Commission against Discrimination and state Attorney General Maura Healey.

The law also prohibits covered entities from making statements intended to discriminate or to incite others to do so. ADF argues the state intends to “force churches and pastors to refrain from religious expression regarding sexuality that conflicts with the government’s views.”

Planned Parenthood celebrates 100 years, 7 million dead babies

If these are aborted or genetically altered?

If these are aborted or genetically altered?

Margaret Louise Sanger (1879-1966) (above) was an activist for birth control, population control, and eugenics. Her legacy is being carried on by Planned Parenthood, which pretends to help the poor while hiding the reality that it targets the vulnerable.

December 2016 – In October, Planned Parenthood Federation of America celebrated its 100th year since Margaret Sanger opened the first clinic in Brooklyn, New York. She believed in “improving” the human race by discouraging reproduction among persons she presumed to have undesirable traits.

What began with birth control in 1916 has become the largest abortion provider in the country. Planned Parenthood’s latest annual report (2014) shows that 43% of the abortion provider’s revenues came from taxpayers via state and federal government health services grants and reimbursements in the amount of $553.7 million.

While Planned Parenthood celebrated 100 years of death, pro-lifers and Christians observed the century milestone in a different way, by gathering to pray for an end to the destruction Planned Parenthood has perpetuated over the years.

“They have an underlying and faithful ally in the media and Hollywood,” said Eric Scheidler, spokesman for Pro-Life Action League.

“We cannot match Planned Parenthood dollar for dollar, yet we can confront them with something they have none of. They don’t have the power of our Lord and prayer.”

Prayer vigils were held at more than 100 Planned Parenthood clinics throughout the country on October 15.

Suit claims companies illegally profited from sale of fetal tissue

afa-abortion-baby-partsThe Daily Signal, the multimedia news organization of The Heritage Foundation, created the graphic above by distilling invoices and price lists subpoenaed by the U.S. House Select Panel on Infant Lives in April 2016.

December 2016 – Two California medical companies have been accused of illegally profiting from the sale of fetal tissue in a lawsuit filed by the Orange County district attorney’s office on October 11. Prosecutors are seeking a $1.6 million fine as well as an injunction to prevent future profits.

Undercover videos circulated last year by the Center for Medical Progress vividly informed the public about the harvesting of aborted baby organs. The lawsuit does not name abortion providers but claims DaVinci Biosciences and DV Biologics collected tens of thousands of dollars in profit from fetal tissue and stem cells they received from abortion providers.

While it is legal for organizations to charge a fee to recover expenses incurred in the process of collecting and donating fetal tissue, the lawsuit alleges the companies sold to research groups at least 500 times between 2012 and 2015 for more than what it cost to process, handle, and ship the body parts.

Religion contributes $1.2 trillion to society

afa-piechart2December 2016 – A study published in September in the Interdisciplinary Journal of Research on Religion details the $1.2 trillion contribution that religion makes to the U.S. annual economy. In areas from health care to education to philanthropy, the benefit of religion for the American economy is greater than the top ten tech companies combined, including Google, Apple, and Microsoft.

Interestingly, the impact of church congregations is the second greatest player in the economics of religion, constituting 36.1% of the total $1.2 trillion. Businesses with religious backgrounds are number one, making 37.8% of the contribution. Charitable institutions generate 26.1%.

The impact is not only monetary. Highly religious individuals are more likely to donate money and goods and time to volunteer, according to Pew Research polling that asked adults about their activities in the prior week. Congregations coordinate 7.5 million volunteers in 1.5 million social programs, and religious organizations have tripled the amount of money they spend on social programs in the last 15 years.

Anti-police rhetoric has consequences

afa-anti-police-rhetoricDecember 2016 – With all the recent media attention on police officers, those who wear a badge are feeling extra pressure. For example, a female officer in Chicago, Illinois, recently felt the stress while being attacked by a 28-year-old male high on PCP.

The man attacked her viciously, slamming her head into the pavement. She was taken to the hospital where she was treated for multiple injuries, and bits of concrete had to be removed from her face.

Eddie Johnson, police superintendent, said, “This attack went on for several minutes. As I was at the hospital last night visiting with her, she looked at me and said she thought she was going to die, and she knew that she should shoot this guy. But she chose not to because she didn’t want her family or the department to have to go through the scrutiny the next day on the national news.”

December 2016 – New Mexico Advocacy Coalition, an anti-human trafficking group, is launching a campaign against major booksellers that sell how-to manuals for pimps. The group found at least 15 such titles on Amazon.com, along with reviews such as “required reading for the pimp in training. Written as an instructional manual.”

While Amazon has a vague restriction against offensive sexual content in books, the New Mexico Advocacy Coalition is petitioning the online seller to step up enforcement of guidelines and stop selling such books. Jet.com, Barnes and Noble, and Wal-Mart were also found to be selling some of the same titles.

U.N. voting on worldwide LGBT advocate

afa-un-rainbowDecember 2016 – In June, the U.N.’s Human Rights Council in Geneva voted to establish an LGBT ombudsman, an official designated to monitor complaints of infringement of LGBT rights and launch investigations in different countries. The ombudsman would determine how U.N. affiliated organizations interact with countries based on how they treat special rights for homosexuals.

Stefano Gennarini, spokesperson for Catholic Family and Human Rights Institute, suggested that such a position would pressure countries to enact homosexual rights and give the LGBT agenda a foothold of power with the U.N. A November vote was planned to determine the outcome of the decision.

Worship positive for health and Keys to Happiness

christian-worshipOctober 2016 – Marripedia, an online social science encyclopedia of research, found that nearly 100 studies show that 81% of the time there is a “positive association between religious involvement and greater happiness, life satisfaction, morale, positive affect, or some other measure of wellbeing.” People who highly value their religious faith and frequently participate in it have reduced incidence of depression or suicide.

In addition, those who attend services at least weekly have lower mortality rates, and a reduced risk of infectious disease, diabetes, and cancer. They live an average of seven years longer than those who are not active in religion.

Regular church attendance also correlates with higher levels of happiness and sexual satisfaction in marriage. Those who attend weekly are seven times less likely to have a sexual partner outside marriage. And teens who are in church at least once per week are more likely to abstain from sex; only 51% of those 17-year-olds had had sex, compared to 70% of those who never attend.

Planned Parenthood: one million deaths in 2015

abortion-planned-parenthood-fadedkidsOctober 2016 – Planned Parenthood global affiliates killed 964,325 babies in 2015, according to International Planned Parenthood Federation.

“If you were to read off the names of IPPF’s tiny victims – without sleeping, breaking, or pausing – it would take you almost two years,” LifeNews.com stated. “In fact, you would never finish. By the time you finished reading the list of all the lives lost in 2015, IPPF’s abortion facilities would have added another two million lives to be accounted for.”

IPPF plans to escalate that endeavor. In Ghana, for example, advertising campaigns led to a 25% increase in clients in the country in 2014. And IPPF takes credit for influencing more than 800 policy and legislative changes in the last decade that push “sexual and reproductive rights” around the world.

Target Boycott

AFA-targetwarningJune 2016 – On April 21, AFA called for a boycott of Target stores after the retail giant publicized its policy to allow transgender individuals access to opposite-sex bathrooms and fitting rooms.

On its website, Target stated, “[We] welcome transgender team members and guests to use the restroom or fitting room facility that corresponds with their gender identity. … Everyone deserves to feel like they belong.”

“Target’s policy poses a threat to women and children,” said AFA president Tim Wildmon. “We think many customers will agree.”

AFA pointed to the very real danger posed by predators and voyeurs who would take advantage of the policy to prey on those who are vulnerable.

“We want to make it very clear that AFA does not believe the transgender community poses this danger to the wider public,” Wildmon said. “Rather, this misguided and reckless policy provides a possible gateway for predators who are out there.”

AFA also criticized the policy for ignoring customers who are simply uncomfortable with the presence of strangers of the opposite sex in such a personal setting.

At press time, more than one million people had signed the boycott pledge in its first eight days. Find more information at afa.net.

Liberal Hypocrisy: Stars peg hypocrisy gauge

AFA-hypocrisy-scaleJune 2016 – North Carolina and Mississippi both passed landmark legislation this spring to protect citizens’ rights. North Carolina House Bill 2, commonly called the “bathroom bill,” overturned a previous ordinance in an effort to prevent individuals from being victimized by people of the opposite gender in public restrooms, locker rooms, and changing areas.

Mississippi HB 1523 seeks to protect business owners’ liberty to decline service based on religious convictions (such as a bakery not being fined by the state for declining to bake a cake for a gay wedding). Both bills have been lambasted by media stars as “anti-LGBTQ.” In addition, they have apparently prompted a number of businesses and entertainers to withdraw performances from the two states.

For example, in North Carolina, PayPal cancelled plans to open a payment center in Charlotte, and singer Bruce Springsteen cancelled a Greensboro concert. Following suit, singer Bryan Adams cancelled a show in Biloxi, Mississippi. In each scenario, the “discriminatory” bills were cited as reason for cancelling.

“Apparently, business can be refused on personal convictions only if those convictions are in line with the left-wing agenda,” observed AFA VP Buddy Smith.

Media Bias: Big 3 big on bias

AFA-abortion-media-biasJune 2016 – In 2014 and 2015, ABC, CBS, and NBC avoided any mention of abortion as dangerous or harmful to women, according to Media Research Center. After compiling data on news coverage of abortion by the three networks, MRC found that their focus was on abortion as a necessity for women’s health.

However, they gave no time to abortion clinic abuses and emergencies reported by sources such as LifeSiteNews and LifeNews. Only the scandal surrounding the videos on Planned Parenthood’s sale of baby body parts got a total 25 minutes of coverage among the three networks.

“They’ll report certain dangers … that make the abortion industry look good and the pro-life movement look bad,” MRC’s Katie Yoder said. “But they won’t talk about how abortion harms women.” (See related story here.)

Pope issues statement on families and life

June 2016 – In early April, the Vatican released Pope Francis’s 256-page exhortation to the church called Amoris Laetitia (Latin for “the joy of love”). This landmark document comes as a tour de force of the Pope’s practical theology regarding issues of sex, marriage, and family life. While Pope Francis has been seen by many as ushering in a new, more inclusive chapter for the Catholic church, this document makes no official changes to doctrine. It does, however, point to a less rigid relationship between the strict religious parameters of Catholic leadership and personal responsibility of laity.

“I understand those who prefer a more rigorous pastoral care which leaves no room for confusion,” Pope Francis noted. “But I sincerely believe that Jesus wants a church attentive to the goodness which the Holy Spirit sows in the midst of human weakness. We have been called to form consciences, not to replace them.”

Interestingly, Amoris Laetitia provides greater grace and inclusion to divorcees (who are often denied communion). However, the document repeatedly notes marriage as a union between a man and a woman and affirms the traditional and foundational pro-life view of the Catholic church: “So great is the value of a human life, and so inalienable the right to life of an innocent child growing in the mother’s womb, that no alleged right to one’s own body can justify a decision to terminate that life.”

All that’s left is the stink

AFA-stinky-mediaJune 2016 – In a study examining TV ratings and content, Parents Television Council found that in a sample two-week stretch in 2014, there were zero hours of TV-G programming, a 100% decrease from 1997. On the other hand, TV-14 shows increased 160%, while TV-PG shows decreased 39%.

While the rating labels imply that both TV-PG and TV-14 ratings are suitable for children at different ages, PTC found the content of both is often equally unsuitable for children. Between 1997 and 2014, there was a 156% increase in sexual situations and coarse language in shows labeled TV-PG.

“The industry should have to answer why TV-G rated primetime series are extinct, why the lines between TV-PG and TV-14 shows are blurred, why more adult content is being shown on TV-PG shows, and why nudity and violence are increasing on broadcast TV overall,” said PTC president Tim Winter.
