Lincoln

Don’t interfere with anything in the Constitution. That must be maintained, for it is the only safeguard of our liberties. ~Abraham Lincoln

America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves. ~Abraham Lincoln

Abraham Lincoln (February 12, 1809 – April 15, 1865) was the 16th President of the United States, serving from March 1861 until his assassination in April 1865. Lincoln led the United States through its Civil War–its bloodiest war and its greatest moral, constitutional and political crisis.[2][3] In so doing he preserved the Union, abolished slavery, strengthened the national government and modernized the economy.

Reared in a poor family on the western frontier, Lincoln was a self-educated lawyer in Illinois, a Whig Party leader, state legislator during the 1830s, and a one-term member of the Congress during the 1840s. He promoted rapid modernization of the economy through banks, canals, railroads and tariffs to encourage the building of factories; he opposed the war with Mexico in 1846. After a series of highly publicized debates in 1858 during which he opposed the expansion of slavery, Lincoln lost the U.S. Senate race to his archrival, Democrat Stephen A. Douglas. Lincoln, a moderate from a swing state, secured the Republican Party presidential nomination in 1860. With almost no support in the South, Lincoln swept the North and was elected president in 1860. His election prompted seven southern slave states to form the Confederacy. No compromise or reconciliation was found regarding slavery.

When the North enthusiastically rallied behind the national flag after the Confederate attack on Fort Sumter on April 12, 1861, Lincoln concentrated on the military and political dimensions of the war effort. His goal was to reunite the nation. He suspended habeas corpus, arresting and temporarily detaining thousands of suspected secessionists in the border states without trial. Lincoln averted British intervention by defusing the Trent affair in late 1861. His numerous complex moves toward ending slavery centered on the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, using the Army to protect escaped slaves, encouraging the border states to outlaw slavery, and helping push through Congress the Thirteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution, which permanently outlawed slavery. Lincoln closely supervised the war effort, especially the selection of top generals, including commanding general Ulysses S. Grant. He made the major decisions on Union war strategy, Lincoln’s Navy set up a naval blockade that shut down the South’s normal trade, helped take control of Kentucky and Tennessee, and gained control of the Southern river system using gunboats. He tried repeatedly to capture the Confederate capital at Richmond. Each time a general failed, Lincoln substituted another until finally Grant succeeded in 1865.

lincolnAn exceptionally astute politician deeply involved with power issues in each state, Lincoln reached out to “War Democrats” (who supported the North against the South), and managed his own re-election in the 1864 presidential election. As the leader of the moderate faction of the Republican party, confronted Radical Republicans who demanded harsher treatment of the South, War Democrats who called for more compromise, Copperheads who despised him, and irreconcilable secessionists who plotted his death. Politically, Lincoln fought back with patronage, by pitting his opponents against each other, and by appealing to the American people with his powers of oratory.[4] His Gettysburg Address of 1863 became an iconic statement of America’s dedication to the principles of nationalism, republicanism, equal rights, liberty, and democracy. Lincoln held a moderate view of Reconstruction, seeking to reunite the nation speedily through a policy of generous reconciliation in the face of lingering and bitter divisiveness. Six days after the surrender of Confederate commanding general Robert E. Lee, Lincoln was assassinated by a confederate sympathizer. Lincoln has been consistently ranked both by scholars[5] and the public[6] as one of the greatest U.S. presidents.

Culture Wars: Catholic Film Festival vs. Hollywood Scandals

Culture Wars:

Catholic Film Festival vs. Hollywood Scandals

Catholic Film Festival Provides Welcome Contrast to Hollywood Scandals and Squalor

Thomas D. Williams, Ph.D.

As Hollywood wallows in ever more sordid sex scandals, an international Catholic Film Festival in Rome has awarded a series of films for their uplifting themes, artistic prowess and positive contribution to culture.

In its eighth annual awards ceremony last week, the Mirabile Dictu Catholic Film Festival underscored the contribution of Catholic actors and filmmakers that strive to create great cinema that inspires and elevates, rather than degrading.

This year’s winners included “A Man of God,” a documentary on the life of Father Władysław Bukowiński, apostle of Kazakhstan and a prisoner of Soviet labor camps; “Come and See,” an innovative black-and-white short film recorded without sound; and “Luz de Soledad,” a movie about a group of Spanish religious sisters in the midst of revolutions, epidemics and religious persecution.

Like other such events, the festival grants awards in several categories: best short film, best documentary, best director and best film. For this year’s festival, more than 1,000 candidates submitted movies for judging, which were later narrowed down to 12 candidates vying for the “Silver Fish,” a sculpture that recalls the first symbol of Christianity (ἰχθύς).

The nominees for best film included “Saint Bridget of Sweden,” from American director Fabio Carini; “Fatima, the Last Mystery,” from Spaniard Andrés Garrigó; and “Ignatius of Loyola: Soldier, Sinner, Saint,” from Philippine director Paolo Dy.

The award was given to the film on Saint Ignatius of Loyola, the Spanish founder of the Jesuit order, which highlights the dramatic conversion from his life as a libertine soldier to that of a formidable Christian missionary.

Each day more stories emerge from the murky Hollywood underworld of predatory producers, actors and filmmakers, leaving the impression that the cinematographic world is one of near absolute corruption and filth.

In October, Oscar-winning actress Emma Thompson said that the sexual abuse and harassment scandal surrounding disgraced Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein is just “the top of a very particular iceberg” in Hollywood’s overall culture.

“I didn’t know about these things, but they don’t surprise me at all, and they’re endemic to the system anyway,” Thompson said in an interview. “What I find sort of extraordinary is that this man is at the top of a very particular iceberg. I don’t think you can describe him as a ‘sex addict,’ he’s a predator.”

The Mirabile Dictu (Latin for “it is wonderful to say”) festival offers a contrary message: that cinema and filmmaking can be put at the service of universal moral values and positive cultural models.

Biblical Worldview, Moral Compass: Judgmental? Who Decides Right and Wrong?

Biblical Worldview, Moral Compass:

Judgmental? Who Decides Right and Wrong?

Who decides right and wrong?

Tim Wildmon

American Family Association President

In order to make a moral judgment about something, we must appeal to a power much higher than man’s opinion.

You know, a lot of left wing celebrities owe their success to God-fearing, patriotic Americans. By that I mean – if not for a standard of right and wrong based on the Judeo-Christian worldview that held sway over our country for two centuries, those who rail against that worldview would have nothing to rebel against. If you think about it, this is very ironic indeed.

September 2017 – I was watching the news a few weeks back when a story came on about Madonna, the singer. It centered on her comments at the rally against President Trump back in January on the Mall in Washington, D.C. Remember? That was when she ranted that she was so outraged that Mr. Trump was elected that she said, “I have thought an awful lot about blowing up the White House.”

As shocking as that was, it barely got any criticism from the liberal media. Now if a conservative celebrity singer had said he or she was thinking about “blowing up the White House” while Barack Obama was president – then we would have seen the liberal media swing into action demanding that the FBI go after the celebrity, concerts be cancelled, etc.

Moral Relativism

Most of the people who yell and scream that we conservative Americans are “racists,” “bigots,” “homophobes,” etc. don’t believe in God. Therefore, these people (sometimes called secular progressives) condemn us when we claim that there are moral absolutes found in the Bible. They say we are “judgmental” – all the while judging us with free rein and self-righteousness. Again, a profound irony. Evidently, they alone (liberals) are able to determine if someone (or a class of people) is bigoted.

One question I would ask, if I could have a reasonable conversation with these people, is this: Assuming you are correct about me, why is it wrong to be a bigot? What makes bigotry morally wrong? According to whom?

The vast majority of liberals don’t have an answer for such questions. And the reason they don’t have an answer is that there is none. If they say, for example, the moral judgment is made based on their opinion, then I can say it’s not my opinion, and what makes your opinion superior to my opinion? In order to make a moral judgment about something, we must appeal to a power much higher than man’s opinion.

I define morality here as “principles concerning the distinction between right and wrong or good and bad behavior.”

While I don’t agree with the religion of Islam, at least I know where they get their morality from. It’s the Koran. As for secular progressives, they just make up morality as they go along, often based on the trends of popular culture. But the things liberals or progressives believe almost always run contrary to the Word of God, the Bible.

Moral Absolutes from the Bible

I’m not sure why this is, except the Bible is true when it states the heart of man is at war with God. So if you have a whole lot of people who are rebelling against God, then they are going to behave this way. The most obvious way the popular culture shows its disdain for Christianity is when it comes to sexual morality. It is really popular today to bash those who proclaim morality which comes from the Bible, especially if it involves sexual behavior. People don’t want God telling them how to live, and they get angry if you say something such as homosexuality is wrong.

More irony. Most of these secular progressives (liberals) also claim to be agnostics or atheists. I have a friend who says the unspoken mantra of a high percentage of these atheists is this: “I don’t believe in God, and I hate Him.”

In other words, it’s not really that many of these people don’t believe in God. No. It’s that they don’t want to believe in God because, if they do, He might require that they give up living for themselves and begin living for Him. So they rebel against a God they say doesn’t exist.

Patriotism: Victory for American Liberty

Victory for American Liberty

The American Revolution was triumphant against overwhelming odds. Challenging the arrogance of the British, George Washington declared boldly: “We have a purpose, and we will defeat you.”

Note the courageous words of heroes, past and present.

“The only way we can keep our freedom is to work at it. Not some of us. All of us. Not some of the time, but all of the time.” Spencer W. Kimball

This is the last day in which the great consummation of God’s purposes will be made, the only dispensation in which the Lord has promised that sin will not prevail. ~Ezra Taft Benson

Rebellion to tyrants is obedience to God. ~Benjamin Franklin

“Never give in. Never give in. Never, never, never, never—in nothing, great or small, large or petty—never give in, except to convictions of honour and good sense. Never yield to force. Never yield to the apparently overwhelming might of the enemy.” ~Winston Churchill

You cannot submit to evil without allowing evil to grow. Each time the good are defeated, or each time they yield, they only cause the forces of evil to grow stronger. Greed feeds greed, and crime grows with success. Our giving up what is ours merely to escape trouble would only create greater trouble for someone else. ~Louis L’Amour

Victory for Liberty!

We must not settle for less.

In the Capitol, many of the men and women we elected to represent our cherished traditional values are rushing to jump aboard the government Titanic, which is fast sinking into the depths of corruption. A tsunami of moral depravity is engulfing society at large. Schools are pumping false and immoral doctrines into America’s children, subverting and even creating hostility toward Judeo-Christian values. Even some church leaders are advising everyone to pull back from the cultural war. In other words, just quit and don’t bother?

Centuries ago, during the American Revolutionary War, when, after an intense battle at sea, John Paul Jones was taunted with surrender, his famously courageous words of defiance were, “I have not yet begun to fight.”

Today, while many physical wars are raging, we are engaged in a massive Cultural War which we cannot ignore—at stake are our souls and the very survival of our families. It is the culture of life versus the culture of death.

How Did We Get to This Point?

judicialtyrannySome of us are old enough to remember the pivotal Supreme Court decisions that accelerated our national moral decline: the ban on prayer and the Bible in the schools, and the national decree allowing abortion on demand.

I always wondered how our society became swamped with evil in such a short time.

But it started years before that. In his book, The Marketing of Evil, David Kupelian shows us how America came to “buy into” immorality on such a large scale. The answer is that evil was and continues to be marketed. “Experts” packaged evil to look wonderful and enticing, and all that is good was made to look stupid and ridiculous. After decades of this intensive marketing, schools, media, science, and government have been powerfully affected. No corner of society has been exempted.

Part of evil’s marketing plan is to hammer everyone repeatedly and relentlessly with its agenda, as the gay extremists have done with their in-your-face attacks on those with traditional values. The current regime has aided in this steamrolling assault with crises, lies, and cover-ups, day after day after day, till we all suffer from an overdose of scandal-fatigue. John Paul Jones didn’t give up, and neither can we.

What Can Be Done?

“The only way we can keep our freedom is to work at it. Not some of us. All of us. Not some of the time, but all of the time.” Spencer W. Kimball

 Truth— Our Greatest Weapon

magnifying-glass-lightoftruthIf we have “not yet begun to fight,” we must begin without delay. Just be prepared to be in it for the long haul, for to lose the battle with the culture of death means the extinction of civilization. So we must have a strategy.

When faced with the avalanche of evil before us, it is tempting to throw our arms up in despair and cry, “what’s the use?” That’s exactly what the adversary wants us to do. Know this at the outset: Surrender is not a strategy—not even an acceptable tactic.

Let’s begin where we are. Even so, we cannot do it all at once. Think of concentrating the light of the sun through a magnifying glass. The light of truth is like the sun, and Truth is our greatest weapon. If we focus the energy of truth effectively, we can make a powerful impact.

Winning Strategy: Work for Moral Victory

reagan2resizeCourage and Moral Clarity

We need to study history to avoid repeating the mistakes of the past, but also to learn from the heroic successes, which were brought about by courage and moral clarity.

One such shining example is Ronald Reagan, who persevered with grace under pressure, while the media and academic elite in this country constantly reviled him. With his unshakable spirit and courage, he ignored the morally weak appeasers, and presided over the defeat of the communist tyranny that had enslaved large parts of the world.

Education

1. At Home

And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them [the words of God] when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up. ~Deuteronomy 6:7

And all thy children shall be taught of the Lord; and great shall be the peace of thy children. ~Isaiah 54:13

family5prayingdinnerOur first responsibility is to our own families. The most effective way to protect them from the general evils in society is to teach them at home. There are vast resources available to homeschoolers now. Don’t wait till you are perfect at it before you begin. The good character you build in your children will compensate by far for any minor imperfections in your curriculum.

One thing we all can do is teach our families at the dinner table—just one dinner topic per day. You’ll be surprised at how well-informed and inspired you can become if you use this simple, low stress, manageable method.

Teach them of their heritage, because no one else will. Build their heritage of faith, for where the Spirit of God is, there is liberty. Building character education in the rising generation will prepare them for the inevitable leadership they face in the future—for good or evil.

Study the scriptures diligently, and pray for victory of righteousness. The prayers of the righteous spare the nation.

2. In Your State

Mark Levin has reminded us that Washington will never be fixed in Washington. So let us go to work in our states.

constitutionDon’t be discouraged. There are many, many good people in this beloved country, fighting with all their hearts for the future of their children and grandchildren. Find these people and vote for them, to represent you. Vote out the corrupt career politicians who are selling us out. If you know the truth, you will be able to discern those who have courage, moral clarity, and integrity, and those who are lying and covering up their evil deeds. Keep seeking truth, and you will not be deceived.

The Founders, in their genius, provided in the Constitution a way for us to push back against tyranny. That way is found in the States. Our power is limited against the federal government leviathan, but we can make a difference in our state.

Remember who our Real Leader Is

This is the last day in which the great consummation of God’s purposes will be made, the only dispensation in which the Lord has promised that sin will not prevail. ~Ezra Taft Benson

elisha2Most of all, we must never forget who our real leader is.

In history, the children of the God of Israel have often faced overwhelming odds, like Gideon’s 300 against the hosts of Syria, and David against Goliath. Jews and Christians on earth have always been a tiny minority. But remember how Elisha comforted the young man when confronted with the hosts of Syria. Elisha prayed that the young man’s eyes might be opened, and the Lord opened his eyes, and behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha.  ‎

“Fear not,” Elisha said, “for they that be with us are more than they that be with them.” (2Kings 6:15-17)

The current occupant of the White House, no matter who he is, can never be our real leader. The God of Israel will always be our Real Leader.

Western Culture Newsletter: Nuclear Family

Western Culture Dinner Topics Theme: Nuclear Family

May 2017 Newsletter

Culture-Wars

Dear Friends,

Welcome to Western Culture Dinner Topics!

LIFE IS FRAGILE. HANDLE WITH PRAYER. Also fragile is the nuclear or traditional family. More than thirty years ago, Christian leaders warned us: Satan has declared war on the family. As I have endeavored to defend the traditional family over the years, I have found this to be true, first hand.

Popular among the many chants of today’s chorus of moral equivalence is: “all variations of the family are essentially equivalent, so why does Western society agonize over the collapse of the family? What’s the big deal? After all, we know this from decades of experimentation.”

Decades, hmm? Really?

“The bottom line is that not all family structures are equal, and not all variations are compatible with basic social and human needs,” William J. Bennett, eminent author and champion of moral values reminds us. This he concludes after a profound study of the history of the nuclear family—not of mere decades or scarcely a generation—but of millennia, about three thousand years. Which study is more credible—the one based on whims of instant gratification, or the one with a foundation of time-tested human experience?

“Why? What is the big deal?”

In their mad scramble for self-fulfillment, comfort, and convenience, adults overlook the greatest victims of their selfishness: children.

Which family structure best meets the needs of children? “We desperately need to reestablish marriage as an exclusive arrangement between a man and a woman,” Bennett continues. “Marriage, monogamous and freely chosen, must be the institution through which children are conceived and born, loved and disciplined, nurtured and raised. And marital permanence must once again become the ideal to which individuals commit themselves and which they strive to maintain.”

Truths restored from ancient history remain unchanged.

The family is ordained of God. Marriage between man and woman is essential to His eternal plan. Children are entitled to birth within the bonds of matrimony, and to be reared by a father and a mother who honor marital vows with complete fidelity.[1]

Someone wisely said we study history to “know who we are.” As Paul told the Romans, “we are children of God.” Knowing that our Heavenly Father loves us so much that He sent His Son to rescue us from the misery of sin, we can safely conclude that God approves of the family unit, and that “happiness in family life is most likely to be achieved when founded upon the teachings of the Lord Jesus Christ.”[2]

The nuclear family is not the result of mere happenstance. “Shaped as we are by long human experience, we must be all the more careful not to lose what has required so much time and so much effort to accomplish. The modern nuclear family is a rare construct; we tamper with its essentials at our peril. As the long record of human experimentation attests, civilizations, even great civilizations, are more fragile and perishable than we think.” (Bennett, The Broken Hearth, 67, 70)

“You are as much serving God in looking after your own children, and training them up in God’s fear, and minding the house, and making your household a church for God, as you would be if you had been called to lead an army to battle for the Lord of hosts.” ~ Charles Spurgeon

We are created in God’s image and need to mirror Him. My role as a wife must be of more importance than my role as a mother because we are training disciples, not making friends with our children. How to help strengthen the faith of the rising generation

It is so obvious that the great good and the terrible evil in the world today are the sweet and the bitter fruits of the rearing of yesterday’s children. As we train a new generation, so will the world be in a few years. If you are worried about the future, then look to the upbringing of your children. ~Gordon B. Hinckley

We warn that individuals who violate covenants of chastity, who abuse spouse or offspring, or who fail to fulfill family responsibilities will one day stand accountable before God. Further, we warn that the disintegration of the family will bring upon individuals, communities, and nations the calamities foretold by ancient and modern prophets. ~Gordon B. See how you can draw your family closer to God in these troubled times

The family is the most important organization in time or in eternity. The Lord instituted the family to endure eternally. ~Joseph Fielding Smith

Nuclear Family: As the forces of evil attack the individual by tearing away at his family roots, it becomes critical for …parents to maintain and strengthen the family. There are certain old truths which will be truths as long as the world endures, and which no amount of progress can change. 1) One of these is that the family (the organization consisting of father, mother, and children) is the foundation of all things in the Church; 2) another, that sins against pure and healthy family life are those which, of all others, are sure in the end to be visited most heavily upon the nations in which they take place. ~Joseph Fielding Smith

The thought of a nation without the family unit as its fundamental foundation, where all the citizens are comparatively strangers to each other and where natural affection is not found; where no family ties bind the groups together, is one of horror. Such a condition could lead to but one end—anarchy and dissolution. ~Joseph Fielding Smith

The gospel of Jesus Christ is family centered; it must be lived in the family. It is here we receive our greatest and most important training as we seek to create for ourselves eternal family units patterned after the family of God our Father. ~Joseph Fielding Smith

The family is both the fundamental unit of society as well as the root of culture. It … is a perpetual source of encouragement, advocacy, assurance, and emotional refueling that empowers a child to venture with confidence into the greater world and to become all that he can be.

The bottom line is the fact that Christian parents have a God-given duty to protect the hearts and minds of our children and, while teaching them to be respectful of others, raise them in a way that honors and exalts the time-honored, biblical tradition of the bedrock of society, indeed of civilization itself, the nuclear family.

Disney’s remake of its classic children’s film “Beauty and the Beast” is attracting headlines, not so much for production quality, although movie critics seem to be mostly on board, but for the controversy surrounding the studio’s decision to include its first “exclusively gay moment” in a scene between villain Gaston and his sidekick, Lefou.

Naturally, conservative-leaning Christians like myself see this as an unfortunate development for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is the fact that the absolute last thing entertainment geared toward confused prepubescent children should include are sex scenes, excessive violence, or “exclusively gay moments.” Prominent evangelist Franklin Graham has called for a boycott of the movie, correctly pointing out in a Facebook post that founder Walt Disney, whom he met as a child, would be “shocked at what happened to the company he started.”

Popular Christian website LifeSiteNews.com has even set up a petition for those who pledge to boycott the film that has, as of this writing, received well over 100,000 signatures. WND has one, as well. And at least one Alabama movie theater is refusing to show the movie altogether.

“They’re trying to push the LGBT agenda into the hearts and minds of your children – watch out!” Graham writes. Sounds ominous, hysterical even, but Disney doesn’t seem to be denying it.

In fact, quite the opposite:

“The studio is sending out a message that this is normal and natural,” director Bill Condon said, “and this is a message that will be heard in every country of the world, even countries where it’s still socially unacceptable or even illegal to be gay.”
So which is it? Because Disney sure seems to have an agenda. Consider the fact that the very same week that news of Disney’s “exclusively gay moment” came out, the studio included a scene of several same-sex couples kissing in an episode of Disney XD’s children’s cartoon “Star vs. the Forces of Evil.”
Turns out, the so-called “conspiracy theory” of a “gay agenda” isn’t a theory at all. In fact, it explains why acceptance and even celebration of the gay lifestyle has become normalized and even elevated to “civil rights” status in a society that once viewed the behavior as abhorrent, even deviant.

The 1989 book “After the Ball: How America will conquer its fear and hatred of Gays in the 90s” (Penguin Books) by Marshall Kirk and Hunter Madsen lays out the plan to use “desensitization,” “jamming” and “conversion” to alter the then-prevailing public view of homosexuals and homosexuality in stunning and, now, prophetic detail.

From the book:

“We are safest, in the long run, if we can actually make them like us. Conversion aims at just this. We mean conversion of the average American’s emotions, mind, and will, through a planned psychological attack, in the form of propaganda fed to the nation via the media. In Conversion, the bigot, who holds a very negative stereotypic picture, is repeatedly exposed to literal picture/label pairs, in magazines, and on billboards and TV, of gays – explicitly labeled as such! – who not only don’t look like his picture of a homosexual, but are carefully selected to look either like the bigot and his friends, or like any one of his other stereotypes of all-right guys – the kind of people he already likes and admires. The image must be that of an icon of normality.”

Sign WND’s petition pledging a boycott of Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast” and other products in respond to the company pushing the “gay” agenda

Please understand, I’m not, nor is anyone I know of, defending any sort of mistreatment of homosexuals. Every human being is created and loved by God and worthy of respect. I can even appreciate the techniques employed by the homosexual lobby to the extent that they’ve succeeded, like the civil rights lobby before it, to remove hatred as a socially acceptable reaction, because it’s not nor should it ever be.

However – and this is the relevant question – has the pendulum swung too far? Has the homosexual lobby’s relentless efforts to sway the public in their direction now reached the point where it is potentially damaging to our kids? After all, it’s one thing to teach children to treat all people with respect, but it’s quite another to “normalize” a lifestyle that at best is contrary to what Christians and thousands of years of human development believes is the best way to raise children – the nuclear family – and at worst is rife with disease and psychiatric disorders.

And make no mistake, the path Disney and others are on goes far beyond simple “normalization.” They want children to see this behavior as something to be desired.

Don’t believe it? Then why do upwards of 15 percent of young women and girls identify as “bisexual” when for most of human history the percentage stood around 2?

We’re not saying their ideas don’t deserve to exist, nor do we wish to squash other beliefs. All swallowed camels aside, the bottom line isn’t so much whether or not we can prove a point or hurt Disney, although the once-trusted studio continues to reach new lows and it would be awesome to see the pendulum swing in our direction for once, just a little.

Christian Leader warns Parents over Disney Gay Agenda

Dobson spanks Disney’s new box-office smash

Film blasted for ‘blatant, agenda-driven decision to introduce homosexuality into children’s classic’

Bob Unruh

Dr. James Dobson, whose organizations, first Focus on the Family and now Family Talk radio, have brought his Christian, pro-family advice to tens of millions across America and around the world, is warning parents now about the subversive message that Disney is promoting.

Regarding the homosexual element in “Beauty and the Beast.”

In a website statement, he blasts the once-family-friendly company for its new agenda.

“I am appalled by Disney’s blatant, agenda-driven decision to introduce homosexuality into a children’s classic which originally did not include this theme,” he said.

“This decision is not surprising in an age where pro-homosexual propaganda is foisted upon every movie and even awarded and celebrated. It is a subtle yet clearly deliberate attempt to normalize homosexual behavior, starting with our children.

“The recent decision by Highlights Magazine to include gay couples in their children’s publications is another tragic example of this concerted effort. We all know it isn’t mere ‘happenstance,’” he wrote.

Sign the new online petition calling for an American boycott of Disney “until it stops promoting homosexuality in children’s movies and programming.”

The movie already has been No. 1 for two weekends in a row, raking in cash totaling about $88 million in its second weekend.

The London Daily Mail also has reported on a same-sex kiss in the Disney TV show called “Star vs. the Forces of Evil.”
“In an episode of Star vs. the Forces of Evil which aired on channel Disney XD a gay couple can be seen sharing a kiss for this first time in the history of the company,” the report said. “In the second series of the cartoon, protagonist Star and her friend Marco attend a concert and find themselves surrounded by kissing couples. … Among the crowd two men can be seen sharing a smooch and later in the episode two further lesbian couples are also spotted kissing.”

Dobson has advised four U.S. presidents on family matters, and has said that when governments go too far, the Christian response is to follow God, not the law.

His comments came regarding a federal appellate court decision last year affirming a California law demanding that pro-life crisis pregnancy centers promote abortion to women who come to them for help.

“If California attempts to enforce this law then do not comply,” he said. “Make them put you in jail.”

The state law, the Reproductive FACT Act, was signed by Gov. Jerry Brown Oct. 9, 2015, and reviewed and upheld by the Ninth Circuit, which is widely regarded as the most-overturned and therefor least reliable federal court of appeal in the country.

Trump reversing ‘devastating trend,’ says Christian leader

Bob Unruhobama-rejected-a

‘Destructive Obama-era policies’ on president’s chopping block

christianquote3-ten-com-lawPresident Donald Trump called for a united effort to make America better to a joint session of Congress Tuesday night, inviting all to join in restoring the nation’s economy, defense and more.

But a prominent Christian leader in attendance said what struck him was Trump’s commitment to religious freedom.

Family Research Council President Tony Perkins said, “Tonight President Trump gave encouragement to Americans of all backgrounds who have suffered the loss of their freedoms, especially religious liberty, because of destructive Obama-era policies.

Perkins said Trump “is taking his first steps to reverse the devastating trend of the government punishing those who live their life according to their deeply held beliefs.”

obama-persecute-christians“That’s why it’s no surprise that recent polling finds the most enthusiastic supporters of Trump are evangelicals, the same ones who helped deliver one of the most stunning upsets in election history,” he said. “President Trump understands that if Americans don’t have the freedom to live according to their faith – whether it’s in the home, in the workplace, or in school – then we really can’t be free. That’s why I remain confident that President Trump will sign an executive order reinstating government-wide protections for religious liberty.”

Perkins noted Trump’s comments about rebuilding the military and charged that the policies of the previous administration dealt with the troops “as a laboratory of liberal social experimentation.”

“These policies have led to chaplains being disciplined for their faith, and religious speech being censored. Religious liberty in the military needs to be reinforced with policies that reflect the law, which allows men and women to not only believe, but act on those beliefs,” he said.

“I am hopeful that tonight’s speech will provide new momentum toward fulfilling the GOP’s promise of dismantling the disastrous Obamacare law and ending the forced partnership between taxpayers and organizations like Planned Parenthood. We are committed to assisting the president and congressional leaders in repealing and replacing Obamacare with a program that is patient-centered and respects the principle that federal funding and subsidies do not go to health care plans which include abortion.

“Tonight, President Trump opened the door wider to solutions that put America back on the right track. As the president continues to fulfill his promises, I believe he will see more Americans rally to his side to join him in making freedom mean something again in America.”

The House Freedom Caucus released a statement praising Trump for laying out “a bold, forward-looking vision for the country that puts the needs of Main Street before those of Washington, D.C.”

“Since his first day in office, President Trump has worked tirelessly to keep his campaign promises: from undoing President Obama’s jobs-killing regulatory regime, to taking action to secure our nation,” the caucus said.

“As President Trump alluded to this evening, there’s much work to be done ahead. We were pleased the president reaffirmed his commitment to fully repeal Obamacare and replace it with patient-centered, market-driven policy. We share his vision and will work to develop a repeal and replace strategy that does just that.”

Protecting Christians, fighting terror? Russia’s on it

Syrian priest: ‘It is miraculous that we are still alive. We owe that to Vladimir Putin’

Aleksandar Pavic

putin-christian-orthodoxA few years ago, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin, who then was Russia’s ambassador to NATO, warned that a new influence had appeared that was becoming a major threat to large segments of the world, namely, Asia, Europe and America.

“There is a new civilization emerging in the Third World that thinks that the white, Northern Hemisphere has always oppressed it and must therefore fall at its feet now. … If the northern civilization wants to protect itself, it must be united: America, the European Union and Russia. If they are not together, they will be defeated one by one,” he said.

He was primarily referring to radical Islam. And America, with its Christian foundation, Europe, with its own Judeo-Christian heritage, and even Russia, with its historic Russian Orthodox Christian church, would appear to have reason to join ranks.

So why would the American political elite be so averse to pursuing better relations with Russia, as President Donald Trump has suggested?

After all, every president in recent years has stated essentially the same goal. Remember then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s “reset” under President Obama?

But opposition to Trump’s suggestions have been loud and long, despite what some have seen as extraordinary efforts on the part of Russia to protect Christians.

It was a 76-year old Flemish priest from the sixth-century Mar Yakub monastery in the Syrian city of Qara who put the issue in the context he understood best, his own life.

protect-christians“It is miraculous that we are still alive. We owe that to the army of Assad’s government and to Vladimir Putin, because he decided to intervene when the rebels threatened to take power… Between ordinary Muslims and Christians, there is no problem. It is those radical Islamic, Western-backed rebels who want to massacre us. … Trump understands that radical Islam is a bigger threat than Russia.”

Paul Marshall, Lela Gilbert and Nina Shea have collaborated to create “Persecuted: The Global Assault on Christians,” which confirms that groups like Pew Research, Newsweek and The Economist also identify Christians as “the world’s most widely persecuted religious group.”

In Europe, many of the newly sprung nationalist, anti-globalist and anti-EU parties have expressed admiration for Russia’s defense of traditional values, along with European Christian intellectuals, who despair over Western Europe’s abandonment of its spiritual roots.

In the Balkans, Russia is the sole power standing up for Christians persecuted by Islamists and has refused to recognize the Western condoned secession of Kosovo from Serbia and the Muslim Albanians ISIS-like destruction of the millennial Christian Church heritage there.

And Archbishop Vsevovlod Chaplin declared, “Any fight against terrorism is moral; we can even call it a holy fight.”
The Kremlin said, “The two leaders emphasized that joining efforts in fighting the main threat – international terrorism – is a top priority. The presidents spoke out for establishing real coordination of actions between Russia and the U.S. aimed at defeating Islamic State and other terrorists groups in Syria.”

‘The Hobbit Party’ uncovers Tolkien’s anti-big government message

Michael Haverluck

American Family Association “Perspective”

keyHobbits may love big parties, but they hate big government, say the authors of The Hobbit Party: The Vision of Freedom that Tolkien Got, and the West Forgot.

hobbit_partyEven though many authors over the years have written about how J.R.R. Tolkien uses numerous Christian analogies throughout his epic series, little attention has been given to the political motivations behind the author of the Lord of the Rings trilogy and The Hobbit when he penned the escapist novels. Through The Hobbit Party, co-authors Dr. Jonathan Witt and Dr. Jay Richards dig deep into Middle-Earth to uncover how Tolkien’s epic series celebrates freedom, trade and limited government — all hot topics that continue[d] to be visited as the November midterm elections approach[ed].

Blending Witt’s evangelical Christian background with the Catholic faith that Richards shares with Tolkien, The Hobbit Party explores answers as to why the celebrated author rejected large top-down solutions as a remedy to the many societal ills plaguing modern times.

“He was deeply worried about where Western democracy was headed and about the many people it was damaging,” the authors divulged about Tolkien. “But he believed the way to confront cultural decay was, well, culturally — in other words, not through government edicts or government planners or government ‘sharers,’ but through the leavening work of great and good art, through discourse grounded in truth and reason, and through the hard and patient work of modeling whatever is worth rescuing and cultivating in civilization.”

berlinwallreaganThe authors insist that Tolkien’s stance on keeping big government out when it comes to assisting the needy should not be misinterpreted as insensitivity toward the poor, downtrodden or dispossessed. Instead, they interpret Tolkien’s worldview to reflect his desire for people’s freedom, which should never be undermined through governments’ intervening social programs.

In fact, Witt and Richards would agree that Tolkien shared the same mindset of former United States President and California Governor Ronald Wilson Reagan when it comes to restricting the role of government to ensure freedom.

“I hope we have once again reminded people that man is not free unless government is limited,” Reagan proclaimed while in office. “There’s a clear cause and effect here that is as neat and predictable as a law of physics: as government expands, liberty contracts.”

Forging their point

Many Tolkien experts and literary critics agree with Witt and Richards that the timeless author exuded an unmistakable desire for liberty and limited government through his chronicles of Middle-Earth — a passion that was driven by his biblical understanding of man and God’s creation.

hobbitshire2“The hobbits’ Shire is a microcosm of Victorian England in every way, especially the way everything works fine without interference from the institutions of the state,” expressed Tom Shippey, author of The Road to Middle-Earth. “But can the Shire really be a model for our more complex times? The Hobbit Party, with its punning title, makes the case that it can be, should be, was meant to be, and that The Lord of the Rings expands the argument to give us images of an ethical as well as ecological politics, ever more badly needed.”

Thomas Howard, who wrote Dove Descending: A Journey into T.S. Eliot’s ‘Four Quartets,’ argues that Witt and Richards touch on something in The Hobbit Party that should be studied and expounded on during political science courses in today’s universities.

“Richards and Witt have opened up an often-ignored aspect of Tolkien’s work, namely the sense in which his myth bespeaks a political and economic order that stands in stark, even violent, contrast to the presiding power structures that dominate this unhappy globe,” Howard asserts.

Richards, who serves as senior fellow at the Discovery Institute and as an assistant research professor at the Catholic University of America’s School of Business and Economics, is a New York Times bestselling author who has tackled many issues concerning Christians and society, including Money, Greed, and GodThe Privileged Planet and The Untamed God. As executive editor for “The Stream,” Richards frequently speaks to the deleterious consequences of government taking a big role when it comes to societal and economic issues.

Witt, who works alongside Richards as managing editor of “The Stream,” is a research and media fellow at the Acton Institute. He is also a senior fellow for Discovery Institute’s Center for Science and Cultures and formerly served as an English professor at the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada. As co-author of A Meaningful World and the lead writer for the “PovertyCure” series and the award-winning film Poverty, Inc., Witt is widely recognized for his candid take on the invasive role of government and its detrimental effects on society.

It’s about time

With multiple works touching on the spiritual significance of Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings, few have come to realize that the iconic author – who spent much of his life in Africa and fellowshipped with C.S. Lewis in England – was just as zealous of an advocate for economic freedom and small government as he was a fiery dissident of tyranny.

Consequently, Witt and Richards illustrate how Tolkien’s passion for freedom is readily witnessed throughout Tolkien’s epic works, which are said to show how Sauron’s campaign of takeover of overreaching evil leads to political, economic and moral bankruptcy.

No current author appreciates The Hobbit Party’s contemporary and relevant message more than British scholar, Joseph Pearce, author of Bilbo’s Journey: Discovering the Hidden Meaning of ‘The Hobbit’ and Literary Giants, Literary Catholics.

hobbitshire1“If much has been written on the religious significance of The Lord of the Rings, less has been written on its political significance — and the little that has been written is often erroneous in its conclusions and ignorant of Tolkien’s intentions,” Pearce points out. “Much more work is needed in this area, not least because Tolkien stated, implicitly at least, that the political significance of the work was second only to the religious in its importance.”

The insight of Witt and Richards is also applauded by Acton Institute research director Samuel Gregg, author of Becoming Europe. Gregg understands and recognizes the deleterious effects of governments over-regulating society and insists that The Hobbit Partywill transform the way readers have viewed Tolkien’s politics in the past.

“J.R.R. Tolkien is one of the most widely read but arguably misunderstood of the twentieth century’s literary geniuses,” Gregg asserts. “In this book, Witt and Richards lift the veil on Tolkien and reveal a political and, yes, economic thinker who constantly surprises readers and whose insights are even more valuable for our time than his own.”

Tolkien ‘red,’ not ‘blue?’

tolkienDespite many different takes on Tolkien’s political leaning in the past, The Hobbit Party clearly lays out what many literary critics consider to be “red” blood flowing through the Hobbit creator’s veins.

“As with the best works of the imagination, Middle-Earth invites one into a true reality, one immersed in timeless and universal truths,” says Bradley J. Birzer, author of American Cicero: The Life of Charles Carroll and a visiting scholar in Conservative Thought at the University of Colorado, Boulder. “Witt and Richards brilliantly delve into the most profound depths of Tolkien’s endlessly fascinating soul. A true conservative in the old sense, he recorded the stories of a world in chaos, but saved by the integrity of the person willing to surrender to grace. This work offers us a true feast: the feast of nobility, truth, goodness, and beauty.”

The Institute for Faith, Work & Economics vice president Art Lindsley takes it a step further, noting how Tolkien portrays Sauron’s regime as a socialist takeover of the world, a point that is captured in The Hobbit Party.

“Beautifully written, this work gives fascinating insights into the realm of Middle-Earth,” Lindsley proclaims. “Moreover, it is a tour of the important issues of our world through Tolkien’s eyes, including limited government, man’s temptation to power, freedom, just war, socialism, distributism, localism, love and death. These topics are woven seamlessly throughout, and you will leave the book with unforgettable impressions of these themes illustrated by Tolkien’s imagery.”

Tolkien’s conservatism is also impressed by David Goldman, who penned How Civilizations Die. He believes the authors of The Hobbit Party clearly present their case that Tolkien gave numerous warning signs about leftist agendas working to destroy Western culture through their reckless expansion of government.

“Witt and Richards do a brilliant job of rescuing Tolkien’s literary legacy from the clutches of the cultural left,” Goldman declares. “They reveal Tolkien as a profoundly Catholic thinker, with deep insights into the fundamental issue of religion, namely man’s attempt to grapple with his own mortality. As a conservative’s companion to Tolkien, The Hobbit Party renews our appreciation of Tolkien’s contribution to literature and his profound impact on our culture.”
