WE ARE IN AN EPIC WAR BETWEEN GOOD AND EVIL. And make no mistake, Christ and the devil are not friends; they are enemies. (2 Cor. 6:15)

George Orwell said, “The most effective way to destroy people is to deny and obliterate their own understanding of their history.”

In the former Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, censorship, rewriting of history, and eliminating undesirable people became part of Soviets’ effort to ensure that the correct ideological and political spin was put on their history. Deviation from official propaganda was punished by confinement in labor camps and execution.[1]

In Escape to Faith and Freedom (volume 1 of upcoming Birthright Covenant series), teen-aged hero Benjamin Benamoz flees to America from the Soviet tyranny. Soon after he arrives, he learns that a certain faction in America is doing the same thing the Soviet tyrants were doing: rewriting history.

Today there are efforts to rewrite history in the U.S. Although the punishment of those they disagree with is not so draconian as that in the Soviet Union, the results are turning out to be much more far-reaching and deadly. Because of lies spewed by college faculties and their allies in the liberal media, our youth are growing up hating America and blaming flaws of human nature particularly on the Christian culture. Why do they hate Christians so much? Ben asks his father the same question:

“Papa, why are they burning Bibles?”

“Because they are afraid of truth.”

“Why are they afraid of truth, Papa?”

“Because truth frees us from their tyranny.”

It is a battle for the very souls of the people we love.

It will require epic heroism to prevail. What is an epic hero? An epic hero is someone of truly righteous character, who, through just and courageous actions, puts God, family, and country before his selfish and immediate interests and saves his people, prevailing in the mortal and spiritual battle of good vs. evil. It’s not always a battle of tanks and guns on the military battlefield. In our case, the Culture War requires spiritual fortitude.

Godly Parents are Epic Heroes, too

Parents who raise their children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord are epic heroes, too, because their children grow up to become leaders who keep our country free.

We cannot shrink or shun the fight, but it need not be overwhelming to the point of paralyzing us. It can be as simple as teaching Bible truths to our families every night at the dinner table. NEWS ALERT! MASSIVE IDENTITY THEFT IN AMERICA!

It’s a crisis! Millions of young Americans, many of their parents, even some grandparents, are missing vital elements of their identity.

Deep, wide, and long investigation has revealed that keys of American core identity have been subtly removed over a period of many years. Graduates of high schools and colleges nationwide respond with a blank stare when asked who they are as American citizens. They have no idea why they are here or where they are headed.

What’s missing?

Not only have Americans themselves been robbed, but there is something missing from our culture, entertainment, schools, government, and society itself.

We are awash in mediocre, utterly forgettable, morally bankrupt idols, such as pirates, “Despicable Me,” Maleficent, and glorifying wimpiness. Missing from literature and entertainment are the fresh, uplifting stories with decent admirable characters.

Roger Scruton laments, “Beauty is vanishing from our world because we live as if it does not matter.”

Vulgarity is no substitute for wit.

Missing is the Biblical Worldview upon which America was founded. Missing in action are the true epic heroes who light up the corridors of history with their shining and noble deeds.

What is an epic hero? An epic hero is someone of truly righteous character, who, through just and courageous actions, puts God, family, and country before his selfish and immediate interests and saves his people, prevailing in the mortal and spiritual battle of good vs. evil.

Historians of integrity trace records back to the root cause of this crisis: the removal of the birthright of American citizens. In other words, the biblical foundation of western civilization has been stolen and sold to the enemy.

Who stole it?

Fifty years ago, a handful of judges, using power that did not belong to them, seized the American birthright of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, and sold it to the enemy of our souls. What have we received in return? Death, bondage, and misery.

What is to be done?

Educate, Educate, Educate.

Truth is the most powerful weapon in the world.

This month our theme is Biblical Worldview. Though banned from entertainment, schools, government, and public discourse, Judeo-Christian scriptures can still be used in our homes. We as parents and grandparents hold the keys to unlock the bondage of godless ignorance into which our children have been thrust. Like Rebekah of old, we can wrest the birthright from the unrighteous and misguided hands of the world and restore it to our families, to bless our posterity for generations to come.

And it can be as simple as teaching Bible truths to our families every night at the dinner table.

In the next few months, we are developing the Birthright Academy. We are seeing the effects of decades of secularism which started in the schools, and from thence have invaded our government and our culture. Today’s college students will be tomorrow’s leaders. We cannot leave the teaching of our youth to the public schools and colleges. By then it will be too late.  If we want to preserve our Judeo-Christian values and culture of liberty, we will need to start serious teaching to the middle school and high school youth, so they will be prepared when they get on their own in college. This is the purpose of the Birthright Academy—to instill the Biblical Worldview into the rising generation, preparing Epic Heroes to lead our nation.

So from now on, we are sharpening the focus of Western Culture Dinner Topics on what matters most— to continually define and defend Judeo-Christian values, more about Israel, our spiritual  brother in the house of Israel,  to provide truth in journalism, and to know true history, so as not to be deceived.

Welcome to Western Culture Dinner Topics! 

WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT? In the 70s, there was a popular song by that title.

Nowadays there are many people wandering the streets, who think they know the answer to that question. But they are very angry all the time, so I suspect they don’t really know what it’s all about, and are therefore very frustrated. Or perhaps, deep down, they do know what it’s all about, but do not want to face the truth.

Then, there is a legion of young adults, who are so self-absorbed—so imprisoned in the pretty lock-box, AKA a “smart phone”—that any glimmer of light from Life’s big picture does not even reach their peripheral  vision. So narrow is the world of this self-imposed digital prison, that its inmates don’t even know there is a window to their future.

What’s it all about? The poor things don’t even know to ask the question, let alone seek its answer.

“It’s not about you.” These words are often spoken to the spoiled, to the selfish, to the control freaks. Yes, it’s true. People like that need to get their minds off themselves. But I would suggest amending that statement:

“It’s not ONLY about you.” Because you are not alone.

 First of all, it’s about God. After all, He created you and me. He has a plan for us, which is the key to our happiness, because He is our Heavenly Father, and He loves us. To Him, it is very much about you. It’s about your choices, and actions. If you are a parent or grandparent, it’s about what you do to teach your children and grandchildren to build a foundation of faith—that is, God’s plan for them. If you are a son or daughter, it’s about learning how to follow the guideposts along the road of life. Those guideposts are also known as The Ten Commandments. If you obey those, you will avoid so many “fiery swamps”, “pits of despair,” and “cliffs of insanity.”[1]  You will be well on the path to happiness. And you will never be alone. You will be more in tune with your Heavenly Father’s will; therefore you will have the Holy Spirit as your companion. And God will raise up friends who will help you.

Why are we here? This is another question answered by God’s plan.

Some people blame all our problems on Adam and Eve. Come on. Is that fair? They were only human. They made mistakes, just like we do. God knew we would make mistakes. That’s all part of His Plan. That’s why He sent His Son.

Choices have consequences. The consequence of our First Parents’ choice to eat the  fruit of the Tree of Knowledge was to gain ability to know good from evil. So Heavenly Father sent them from Eden, not because He was angry, but because they needed to experience the inevitable consequence of every choice. He also sent them out of His presence, to learn how to distinguish good from evil in the great proving grounds called mortality, and to learn how to walk by faith.

So that’s why we are hereto choose right over wrong, of our own free will. God will force no man or woman to heaven. But we needn’t worry about being punished for the sins of Adam and Eve. Only our own mistakes. That is enough. But we must own those, not blame them on Eve, or anyone else. This accepting of responsibility is called repentance. That’s all we have to do—simply repent, and our beloved Savior does the rest.

compass liahonaOur merciful Heavenly Father did not send His first children into the wilderness without preparing them.   Nor does He expect us to make our epic journey of life without help. We can set our course using the guidebook, or the Bible, which shows the path taken by our noble ancestors. We can gather our daily bread from the scriptures. And we have a built-in compass called our conscience.

These are the bricks for our foundation of faith, with Jesus Christ as the cornerstone.

And that’s what it’s all about.

Your epic quest begins at birth

To find your purpose here on earth.

Along the way your heart will learn

How good from evil to discern.

Moments in time will come to define

Trials of your soul, to test and refine.

 

Discover things that will be treasured,

Perhaps not always in money measured—

Gems of knowledge, virtue, truth,

Due to repeated falsehoods which are taught in many schools, confusion can be overwhelming. Therefore, we will be giving more emphasis on defining worldly ideas and reporting true history, even if it requires some repetition.

Transmit a Legacy of Faith and Freedom to Your Children and Grandchildren

In the next few months, we are developing the Birthright Academy. We are seeing the effects of decades of secularism which started in the schools, and from thence have invaded our government and our culture. Today’s college students will be tomorrow’s leaders. We cannot leave the teaching of our youth to the public schools and colleges. By then it will be too late.  If we want to preserve our Judeo-Christian values and culture of liberty, we will need to start serious teaching to the middle school and high school youth, so they will be prepared when they get on their own in college. This is the purpose of the Birthright Academy—to instill the Biblical Worldview into the rising generation, preparing Epic Heroes to lead our nation.

TRY TO IMAGINE THE WORLD WITHOUT AMERICA.[1]

I know, a few people with very loud voices, some leading to violent action, continue to hate America and try to destroy her. But while the dogs bark, the wagons roll on. As we have seen in the last election, an overwhelming majority of Americans prefer a patriot at the helm of our government—a patriot who believes in American Exceptionalism.

               No one can deny that America stands out among the nations of the world. But what is the cause of this exceptionalism? That is where the debate arises.

The hate groups claim that America rose to power because of greed and oppression. The truth is, fewer than 5 percent of all people who have ever lived on the earth have lived under conditions that we could consider “free.” [2]

  Only through inspired leadership by men raised up by God for that purpose did America become great. If not for the courage and integrity of the Founding Fathers, would America have been any better than the bloody tyrannies of previous thousands of years of history? But the protecting Hand of God has been over America from the beginning.

               Even in his historic voyage of 1492, despite daunting opposition, Christopher Columbus was driven by a sense of divine purpose. He brought with him a Jewish Rabbi, for he hoped to find the lost tribes of Israel. His writings reveal that he was led by the Holy Spirit. His first action upon arriving on shore was to kneel and thank God, and then claim the land for Jesus Christ.

George Washington and his compatriots felt a strong connection to Biblical Israel. They wove it into the great shield, into the money, into the architecture, and in everything they did.

George Washington consecrated, not only his own life and sacred honor, but he also dedicated his troops and his every action to the cause of liberty. He made a covenant with God. In return, God has blessed this land with liberty, protection, and prosperity, so that the gospel of Jesus Christ could flourish and be sent out to all the world.[3]

So the next time you hear the current smear campaign against America and the good men who have fought and died for the liberty we enjoy, let us remember that without the smile of God’s approval and His protective Hand, we would all be in bondage, just like the rest of the world.

A recent report produced by Pew Research Center concluded that the United States of America has more Christians than any other nation in the world. Studies further conclude that Americans—in addition to representing the largest Christian nation—actually live their religion. Almost 80 percent of the America population claims to be Christian. But their actions speak even louder than their words. Hinckley, Christian leader. “As we train a new generation, so will the world be in a few years. If you are worried about the future, then look to the upbringing of your children.”

We live in a world that seems to worship its own kind of greatness and to produce its own kind of heroes. A recent survey of young people ages eighteen through twenty-four revealed that today’s youth . . . clearly seek to pattern their lives after the glamorous and “boundlessly rich.” During the 1950s, heroes included Winston Churchill, Albert Schweitzer, President Harry Truman, Queen Elizabeth, and Helen Keller—the blind and deaf writer-lecturer. These were figures who either helped shape history or were noted for their inspiring lives. Today, many of the top ten heroes are movie stars and other entertainers, which suggests something of a shift in our attitudes. [1]

“Let us not be trying to substitute an artificial life for the true one, ”said one Christian leader of the 20th century, long before TV and social media.[2]

To be a successful father or a successful mother is greater than to be a successful general or a successful statesman.” [3]

Greatness requires the development of character

What kind of greatness do you want your children to pass on from their upbringing?  Should we covet that which is but the drop, and neglect the more weighty matters?[4]

Greatness requires the development of character. True greatness is never a result of a chance occurrence or a one-time effort or achievement. It requires a multitude of correct decisions in the everyday choices between good and evil.[5] Over the years these little choices will be bundled together and show clearly what we value.[6]

True greatness comes from persevering in the difficulties of life and from serving in ways that are often unnoticed.

“True greatness [comes from] the thousands of little deeds and tasks of service and sacrifice that constitute the giving, or losing, of one’s life for others and for the Lord.”[7]

Stress Relief Tip of the Month: Listen

When I was first married, I asked my mother for her advice on raising children. She said, simply: “Just listen to them.” My mother was a good listener. We could talk to her about anything. I tried to follow her advice, and found that I rarely had to offer solutions to their problems. Usually they would figure things out themselves once they vented their feelings about the situation. Sometimes we just need to talk to someone. Who better than a loving parent?

There is someone else we parents need to listen to: the Holy Spirit. ~C.D.

Welcome to Western Culture Dinner Topics!

                LIFE IS FRAGILE. HANDLE WITH PRAYER. Also fragile is the nuclear or traditional family. More than thirty years ago, Christian leaders warned us: Satan has declared war on the family. As I have endeavored to defend the traditional family over the years, I have found this to be true, first hand.

Popular among the many chants of today’s chorus of moral equivalence is: “all variations of the family are essentially equivalent, so why does Western society agonize over the collapse of the family? What’s the big deal? After all, we know this from decades of experimentation.”

Decades, hmm? Really?

                “The bottom line is that not all family structures are equal, and not all variations are compatible with basic social and human needs,” William J. Bennett, eminent author and champion of moral values reminds us. This he concludes after a profound study of the history of the nuclear family—not of mere decades or scarcely a generation—but of millennia, about three thousand years. Which study is more credible—the one based on whims of instant gratification, or the one with a foundation of time-tested human experience?

“Why? What is the big deal?”

                In their mad scramble for self-fulfillment, comfort, and convenience, adults overlook the greatest victims of their selfishness: children.

                Which family structure best meets the needs of children? “We desperately need to reestablish marriage as an exclusive arrangement between a man and a woman,” Bennett continues. “Marriage, monogamous and freely chosen, must be the institution through which children are conceived and born, loved and disciplined, nurtured and raised. And marital permanence must once again become the ideal to which individuals commit themselves and which they strive to maintain.”

Truths restored from ancient history remain unchanged.

The family is ordained of God. Marriage between man and woman is essential to His eternal plan. Children are entitled to birth within the bonds of matrimony, and to be reared by a father and a mother who honor marital vows with complete fidelity.[1]

           Someone wisely said we study history to “know who we are.” As Paul told the Romans, “we are children of God.” Knowing that our Heavenly Father loves us so much that He sent His Son to rescue us from the misery of sin, we can safely conclude that God approves of the family unit, and that “happiness in family life is most likely to be achieved when founded upon the teachings of the Lord Jesus Christ.”[2]

The nuclear family is not the result of mere happenstance. “Shaped as we are by long human experience, we must be all the more careful not to lose what has required so much time and so much effort to accomplish. The modern nuclear family is a rare construct; we tamper with its essentials at our peril. As the long record of human experimentation attests, civilizations, even great civilizations, are more fragile and perishable than we think.” (Bennett, The Broken Hearth, 67, 70)

Welcome to Western Culture Dinner Topics!

THE JUDEO-CHRISTIAN WAY OF LIFE IS VANISHING. Easter used to be an integral part of American life—attendance at church on Easter Sunday, Easter sunrise services, and a week-long break from school designated as Easter vacation. Many stores are politically correct, having purged all vestiges of the true and traditional meaning of Easter. Now, Christ and Easter are banished, replaced by “Spring Break”, and everywhere children expect another sugar overload, just like Halloween.

Our mission here is to preserve and protect the Judeo-Christian culture, that precious way of life—to keep it alive for our children and grandchildren. Can we prevent the rising generation from becoming the Generation” lost”? If we do not tell them about our cherished values, they will never know. They need you, their parents, to pass on the values that are the only way to true happiness.

Pass on Judeo-Christian values to your children with this engaging and wholesome classic

Teach them about the Atonement of Jesus Christ, so that they can feel “encircled in His gentle arms.” This is best explained in a quote from Dieter F. Uchtdorf:

The Sacrifice of the Son of God

Each year at this time we commemorate and ponder the sacrifice Jesus Christ made for all mankind.

What the Savior did from Gethsemane to Golgotha on our behalf is beyond my ability to grasp. He took upon Himself the burden of our sins and paid an eternal and binding ransom not only for Adam’s original transgression but also for the sins and transgressions of the billions upon billions of souls who have ever lived. This eternal, sacred sacrifice caused “even God, the greatest of all, to tremble because of pain, and to bleed at every pore, and to suffer both body and spirit” (D&C 19:18).

He suffered for me.

He suffered for you.

My soul overflows with gratitude when I contemplate the precious meaning of this sacrifice. It humbles me to know that all who accept this gift and incline their hearts to Him can be forgiven and cleansed of their sins, no matter how dark their blemish or how oppressive their burden.

We can be made spotless and pure once again. We can be redeemed by the eternal sacrifice of our beloved Savior.

Easter comes in the second week of April this year, but it is not something to think about one day per year, rather it is the essence of the Gospel, the very substance of our lives, the only key to true happiness.

So remember, Easter is not just a holiday—it’s a way of Life!

For some, much of rejoicing and gladness, good health, and gracious living. For others, perhaps sickness and a measure of sorrow. We do not know.

 

 

But one thing we do know.  Like the polar star in the heavens, regardless of what the future holds, there stands the Redeemer of the world, the Son of God, certain and sure as the anchor or our immortal lives. He is the rock of our salvation, our strength, our comfort, the very focus of our faith.

In sunshine and in shadow we look to Him, and He is there to assure and smile upon us.

Victorious over pain and death,

My King, my Leader, and my Lord.

Dear Friends,

WE WRESTLE AGAINST. . . THE DARKNESS OF THIS WORLD, AGAINST SPIRITUAL WICKEDNESS IN HIGH PLACES.[1]

culture-wars-Erase-The-CountryIn America’s glorious history, we won great wars for freedom—the Revolutionary War, World War II. And in the Cold War—a battle of the minds—America prevailed as well. But all during the World Wars and the Cold War, another conflict was seething. This was cultural Marxism, a stealth invasion of political correctness beginning in our schools, and subsequently into our government, our media, and yes, even our churches, with the goal of destroying Western Civilization.

war-in-heavenToday’s culture wars confront us with an unprecedented type of warfare which military might, though important, cannot win alone. This is a war for minds and souls—ours, and our children’s. This war began in heaven, and will continue until the 2nd Coming. It will not be won in a few months, or even years.

Long before America fought the four-year Civil War to end the abomination of slavery, William Wilberforce was waging his own war to abolish slavery in England. It was not a war with conventional weapons. It was a battle for spiritual freedom, to persuade Parliament, and the people—one soul at a time. It took him 46 years. He dedicated his entire adult life to it, but he succeeded in abolishing slavery without a physical war. (Oh, that America had been so wise.)

Because America sold her birthright of Judeo-Christian values for a mess of multiculturalism, we are now faced with a similar unending battle against lies and devilish doctrines bent on destroying Western culture, which has provided most of the world’s knowledge, progress, food, medicine, technology, quality of life, representative government, and liberty.[2]

Do What It Takes

It will take courage, a willingness to stand for what is right, even if we stand alone.  The First Lady was  bashed for reciting the Lord’s prayer. Someone who simply posted a quote from George Washington on his Facebook page was confronted by an anti-Christian, anti-American tirade. It’s only going to get worse, so we might as well brace ourselves. To give up or give in is to perish. A friend once reminded me that to be reviled for our Christian beliefs is to wear a badge of honor.

passing-torchMaybe right living is hard. Maybe at times it is even excruciating. But the reward of knowing you’ve lived with integrity makes the sacrifice all that much more fulfilling. [3]

Of course we start with ourselves, by living Judeo-Christian values day by day.  But we cannot afford to keep this to ourselves. We must pass this birthright  on to our friends and loved ones, one soul at a time.

What matters most is what lasts longest, and our families are for eternity.[4]

The boy was frightened by the massive hosts of Assyrian troops which loomed on every side. But Elisha opened the boy’s eyes, and he saw the hosts of heaven arrayed in battle. The Lord is on our side. Never forget Who is at the helm.

 

So from now on, we are sharpening the focus of Epicworld Dinner Topics on what matters most— to continually define and defend Judeo-Christian values, more about Israel, our spiritual  brother in the house of Israel,  and to know our enemy, so as not to be deceived.

covenant2In these times of moral and political upheaval, sooner or later, we may find ourselves at the receiving end of the smear—that is, when someone spreads lies about us because they don’t agree with our Judeo-Christian worldview.

We have no control over other people’s choices, or their use or abuse of their free will. Under such circumstances, what can we do?

The Psalmist offers a wise solution to this dilemma:

Wait on the Lord: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the Lord. ~Psalm 27:14

Yes, I know this is easier said than done. If you continually stress over how to react to such attacks,  no matter how hard you try, the attackers will not believe the truth. You only become exhausted and discouraged. Then is the time to place it in the hands of the Lord, the only One whom you can trust without reservation.

Our only course is to remain “steadfast and immovable”, in keeping the commandments of God. Our covenant with Him will protect us.

WHAT IS TRUTH?

This question has echoed through the ages, since Pilate asked it of Jesus the Christ. This is a good question today for some who, sadly, are” ever learning, but never coming to a knowledge of the truth.”[1] We can only hope that at some point their prejudices may give way before the truth. Those seeking truth in the spacious, but specious,[2] towers of moral relativism will search in vain, because truth abides forever and ever, not subject to popular opinion, not based on trendy fads. Truth is absolute.

“Why are we here? Without truth, many wonder, “What is the purpose of life?” These are the ones  who sincerely seek the truth, only to be kept from it, for they do not know where to find it.

 

forgiveness4doveSo How Do We Find the Truth?

One ancient prophet said of his Creator: “He is a God of truth, and cannot lie.” Therefore, a logical place to start looking for truth is in the word of God. Saint John said “it is the Spirit that beareth witness, because the Spirit [of Christ] is truth.”[3]

So, if we ask what is true, with a sincere heart, having faith in Christ, He will manifest the truth to us, by the power of the Holy Spirit. And by the power of the Holy Spirit, we may know the truth of all things.

But Why Does It Matter?

Not too long ago, Sean McDowell, Ph.D.,  a professor of Christian Apologetics,  was speaking at a youth event. Afterwards, a student came up to him and said, “You talked about truth a lot. What’s the big deal? Why is truth even important?”

                Why does truth matter? I would suggest to this young man: “At some point in time, in some real crisis, not an imagined one, perhaps you will even be faced with death.  In that defining moment, real truth will be important.”

naval-academy                Dr. Peter Marshall, a beloved chaplain in the United States Senate in the 1940s, was invited to speak at the Naval Academy. He was prepared to address his concern about the loose morals of the young people at that time. But the Spirit gave him a different message.  He felt strongly impressed to speak to them about death.

He told them about a young boy with a fatal illness. The boy Mother_Reading_to_Sonasked his mother what it was like to die.  She reminded him of those days when he had come in from play, so exhausted that he had fallen asleep on his mother’s bed, without even changing his clothes. When he awoke in the morning, he was in his own bed. Daddy had lovingly lifted him up in his strong arms and carried him to the comfort of his own bed, where he belonged.

That is what death is like, his mother continued. You fall asleep and when you wake up in the morning, you find that Heavenly Father has lifted you up and brought you home to the comfort of His loving arms, where you belong. And the little boy no longer feared death.

So the Spirit prompted Dr. Marshall to tell the truth about death to those hundreds of bright young sailors at the Naval Academy. Shortly thereafter, Pearl Harbor was bombed, and many of those sailors faced death in the devastating war that followed.

Yes, truth matters. We need it to give meaning to our lives.

Saint John reminds us that the Spirit “will guide you into all truth.”[4] And Jesus Christ is that way, that truth, and life eternal. At the end of the day, through Him we can return home, where we belong.

Stress Relief Tip: Look in the Mirror

mirror-looking-incompass liahonaThis month is a traditional time to do this, but for best results, it is done frequently throughout the year. This is not for reasons of vanity, of course. This is a metaphor for introspection. Sometimes it is wise to simply face the truth about ourselves. Not to go around beating ourselves up, but, let’s face it. We have all done things we wish we hadn’t, and it’s always a good idea to take stock of the direction we’re headed. One time one of my sons (I am blessed that all my children live the principles of the gospel) corrected me. It opened my eyes that I needed to make an attitude adjustment. I’m so glad I did. One Christian leader calls it “Making course corrections.” The Lord’s name for it is repentance. That is His gift to us—a wonderful gift that so often goes unappreciated.
