Trump: America’s First Citizen President

Christopher Ruddy

Even before Donald Trump takes the oath of office on January 20th of next year, he has already made the history books.

TrumpHat-not-screw-up-countryIn the 240 years of our Republic, not one person has ever been elected to the presidency without having served in public office or as a general of the Army.

On Election Day the American people picked one of the best-known businessmen in the nation to become its 45th president.

This news completely flummoxed the media and political establishment.

On election night at about 5 PM Eastern, I received a call from one of the top political guns in the country.

He told me the exit poll data and other tracking numbers were showing a Hillary win of 320 to 330 electoral votes. [The AP later confirmed that’s what the data was showing.] Practically every pollster in the nation had a similar opinion.

They were almost all wrong.

expertShakespeare has this oft quoted line about killing all the lawyers, but I think we should just simply say kill the political experts.

That’s the remarkable thing about Donald Trump’s success: he relied on few political consultants and little polling. Trump never believed in experts.

As he said, to the consternation of some in the media, he thought he had a pretty good brain himself.

They laughed at him, but it turned out to be quite true.

In some ways hes like the Warren Buffett of politics.

Buffett remarked he never understood why people that drive Rolls-Royces seek stock advice from people on Wall Street who take the subway to work every day.

trump-im-rightHere are my takeaways on a Trump presidency:

  1. Pragmatism. Donald Trump is not an ideologue. He believes in ideas, but only if they work. He primarily wants results. Expect opening moves that show he will have a sensible approach to governing. Don’t expect massive deportations or any blanket Muslim ban. Do expect quick deportations of illegal alien criminals and much more scrutiny of individuals coming from terrorist countries.
  2. A Policy President. Some presidents enjoy the managerial aspects of the job and they usually end up as disasters. Think Jimmy Carter. Trump will be much more Reaganesque in his approach, setting broad policies for his administration, but focusing his talents on selling those programs to Congress and the public.
  3. Bipartisan. We just went through one of the most bitter elections in history. Trump’s inclination is to be bipartisan. Remember, like Reagan, he was a Democrat most of his life. On a personal level many Democrats in the House and Senate will tell you that they like Trump. Trump is a deal guy, and he will work to bring a divided Congress together. Expect a major fix on Obamacare but not a full repeal. Trump will keep blanket health coverage for catastrophic care, but he will reduce costly mandates.

National pro-life leaders are applauding President-elect Donald Trump’s pick of Republican Rep. Tom Price of Georgia for secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).

“Chairman Price, a renowned physician, has earned a reputation for being a tireless problem solver and the go-to expert on healthcare policy, making him the ideal choice to serve in this capacity,” Trump said in a statement. “He is exceptionally qualified to shepherd our commitment to repeal and replace Obamacare and bring affordable and accessible healthcare to every American. I am proud to nominate him as Secretary of Health and Human Services.”

abortion3-pro-lifePrice, who has a 100 percent pro-life voting record, will likely not only play a major role in the repeal and replacement of Obamacare, but also in the redirection of taxpayer funds to health centers that do not perform abortions.

Brent Bozell, founder of the Media Research Center (MRC) released the following statement on Price’s nomination:

The appointment of Rep. Tom Price as Secretary of Health and Human Services is yet another excellent cabinet choice by President-elect Trump. Trump seems absolutely committed to honoring his pro-life commitments by selecting a man with a 100% pro-life record…And in choosing a pro-life cabinet member, Trump has disrupted the liberal media’s pro-abortion agenda, their single most important issue.

Susan B. Anthony List president Marjorie Dannenfelser also commented:

Representative Tom Price is an excellent choice for Secretary of Health and Human Services. He has a 100 percent pro-life record and is well positioned to champion truly comprehensive health care. He helped lead the charge to defund Planned Parenthood through budget reconciliation, setting the stage for President-elect Trump and a pro-life Congress to reallocate those funds to support comprehensive women’s healthcare. As HHS Secretary, he will play a key role in developing a robust health care reform proposal that protects life and consciences, while promoting options for low-income individuals and families.

President-elect Trump has made an excellent choice in Rep. Price as Secretary of HHS. In particular, Rep. Price’s strong pro-life values and record to match make him the right man to reform an agency that has been marred by its aggressive abortion agenda. The Department of HHS caused the largest religious liberty class-action lawsuit in American history when it tried to force religious employers and charities like the Little Sisters of the Poor to pay for and provide things like abortion pills in their healthcare plans. We are confident that Rep. Price will finally put an end to the anti-religious liberty HHS mandate, as well as introduce comprehensive reforms to restore the agency as one that genuinely promotes healthcare that respects human life and dignity.

Abortion chain Planned Parenthood and its CEO Cecile Richards, however, are denouncing the choice.
