The following is adapted from a talk given at Hillsdale College on January 27, 2013, during a conference on “The Federal Income Tax: A Centenary Consideration,” co-sponsored by the Center for Constructive Alternatives and the Ludwig von Mises Lecture Series.


WITH THE FEDERAL DEBT spiraling out of control, many Americans sense an urgent need to find a political leader who is able to say “no” to spending. Yet they fear that finding such a leader is impossible. Conservatives long for another Ronald Reagan. But is Reagan the right model? He was of course a tax cutter, reducing the top marginal rate from 70 to 28 percent. But his tax cuts—which vindicated supply-side economics by vastly increasing federal revenue—were bought partly through a bargain with Democrats who were eager to spend that revenue. Reagan was no budget cutter—indeed, the federal budget rose by over a third during his administration.

An alternative model for conservatives is Calvin Coolidge. President from 1923 to 1929, Coolidge sustained a budget surplus and left office with a smaller budget than the one he inherited. Over the same period, America experienced a proliferation of jobs, a dramatic increase in the standard of living, higher wages, and three to four percent annual economic growth. And the key to this was Coolidge’s penchant for saying “no.” If Reagan was the Great Communicator, Coolidge was the Great Refrainer.

Enter Coolidge
Following World War I, the federal debt stood ten times higher than before the war, and it was widely understood that the debt burden would become unbearable if interest rates rose. At the same time, the top income tax rate was over 70 percent, veterans were having trouble finding work, prices had risen while wages lagged, and workers in Seattle, New York, and Boston were talking revolution and taking to the streets. The Woodrow Wilson administration had nationalized the railroads for a time at the end of the war, and had encouraged stock exchanges to shut down for a time, and Progressives were now pushing for state or even federal control of water power and electricity. The business outlook was grim, and one of the biggest underlying problems was the lack of an orderly budgeting process: Congress brought proposals to the White House willy-nilly, and they were customarily approved.

The Republican Party’s response in the 1920 election was to campaign for smaller government and for a return to what its presidential candidate, Warren Harding, dubbed “normalcy”—a curtailing of government interference in the economy to create a predictable environment in which business could confidently operate. Calvin Coolidge, a Massachusetts governor who had gained a national reputation by facing down a Boston police strike—“There is no right to strike against the public safety by anybody, anywhere, any time,” he had declared—was chosen to be Harding’s running mate. And following their victory, Harding’s inaugural address set a different tone from that of the outgoing Wilson administration (and from that of the Obama administration today): “No altered system,” Harding said, “will work a miracle. Any wild experiment will only add to the confusion. Our best assurance lies in efficient administration of our proven system.”

One of Harding’s first steps was to shepherd through Congress the Budget and Accounting Act of 1921, under which the executive branch gained authority over and took responsibility for the budget, even to the point of being able to impound money after it was budgeted. This legislation also gave the executive branch a special budget bureau—the forerunner to today’s Office of Management and Budget—over which Harding named a flamboyant Brigadier General, Charles Dawes, as director. Together they proceeded to summon department staff and their bosses to semiannual meetings at Continental Hall, where Dawes cajoled and shamed them into making spending cuts. In addition, Harding pushed through a tax cut, lowering the top rate to 58 percent; and in a move toward privatization, he proposed to sell off naval petroleum reserves in Wyoming to private companies.

Unfortunately, some of the men Harding appointed to key jobs proved susceptible to favoritism or bribery, and his administration soon became embroiled in scandal. In one instance, the cause of privatization sustained damage when it became clear that secret deals had taken place in the leasing of oil reserves at Teapot Dome. Then in the summer of 1923, during a trip out West to get away from the scandals and prepare for a new presidential campaign, Harding died suddenly.

Enter Coolidge, whose personality was at first deemed a negative—his face, Alice Roosevelt Longworth said, “looked as though he had been weaned on a pickle.” But canny political leaders, including Supreme Court Justice and former President William Howard Taft, quickly came to respect the new president. Secretary of State Charles Evans Hughes, after visiting the White House a few times that August, noted that whereas Harding had never been alone, Coolidge often was; that whereas Harding was partial to group decisions, Coolidge made decisions himself; and most important, that whereas Harding’s customary answer was “yes,” Coolidge’s was “no.”

The former governor of Massachusetts was in his element when it came to budgeting. Within 24 hours of arriving back in Washington after Harding’s death, he met with his own budget director, Herbert Lord, and together they went on offense, announcing deepened cuts in two politically sensitive areas: spending on veterans and District of Columbia public works. In his public statements, Coolidge made clear he would have scant patience with anyone who didn’t go along: “We must have no carelessness in our dealings with public property or the expenditure of public money. Such a condition is characteristic of undeveloped people, or of a decadent generation.”

If Harding’s budget meetings had been rough, Coolidge’s were rougher. Lord first advertised a “Two Percent Club,” for executive branch staffers who managed to save two percent in their budgets. Then a “One Percent Club,” for those who had achieved two or more already. And finally a “Woodpecker Club,” for department heads who kept chipping away. Coolidge did not even find it beneath his pay grade to look at the use of pencils in the government: “I don’t know if I ever indicated to the conference that the cost of lead pencils to the government per year is about $125,000,” he instructed the press in 1926. “I am for economy, and after that I am for more economy,” he told voters.

Coolidge in Command
“It is much more important to kill bad bills than to pass good ones,” Coolidge had once advised his father. And indeed, while Harding had vetoed only six bills, Coolidge vetoed 50—including farming subsidies, even though he came from farming country. (“Farmers never had made much money,” he told a guest, and he didn’t see there was much the government could rightly do about it.) He also vetoed veterans’ pensions and government entry into the utilities sector.

The Purpose of Tax Cuts

In short, Coolidge didn’t favor tax cuts as a means to increase revenue or to buy off Democrats. He favored them because they took government, the people’s servant, out of the way of the people. And this sense of government as servant extended to his own office.

But as unpopular as he was in Washington, Coolidge proved enormously popular with voters. In 1924, the Progressive Party ran on a platform of government ownership of public power and a return to government ownership of railroads. Many thought the Progressive Party might split the Republican vote as it had in 1912, handing the presidency to the Democrats. As it happened, Progressive candidate Robert LaFollette indeed claimed more than 16 percent of the vote.

Yet Coolidge won with an absolute majority, gaining more votes than the Progressive and the Democrat combined. And in 1928, when Coolidge decided not to run for reelection despite the urging of party leaders who looked on his reelection as a sure bet, Herbert Hoover successfully ran on a pledge to continue Coolidge’s policies.

Unfortunately, Hoover didn’t live up to his pledge. Critics often confuse Hoover’s policies with Coolidge’s and complain that the latter did not prevent the Great Depression. That is an argument I take up at length in my previous book, The Forgotten Man, and is a topic for another day. Here let me just say that the Great Depression was as great and as long in duration as it was because, as economist Benjamin Anderson put it, the government under both Hoover and Franklin Roosevelt, unlike under Coolidge, chose to “play God.”

Lessons from Coolidge

Beyond the inspiration of Coolidge’s example of principle and consistency, what are the lessons of his story that are relevant to our current situation? One certainly has to do with the mechanism of budgeting: The Budget and Accounting Act of 1921 provided a means for Harding and Coolidge to control the budget and the nation’s debt, and at the same time gave the people the ability to hold someone responsible. That law was gutted in the 1970s, when it became collateral damage in the anti-executive fervor following Watergate. The law that replaced it tilted budget authority back to Congress and has led to over-spending and lack of responsibility.

A second lesson concerns how we look at tax rates. When tax rates are set and judged according to how much revenue they bring in due to the Laffer Curve—which is how most of today’s tax cutters present them, thereby agreeing with tax hikers that the goal of tax policy is to increase revenue—tax policy can become a mechanism to expand government. The goals of legitimate government—American freedom and prosperity—are left by the wayside.

Thus the best case for lower taxes is the moral case—and as Coolidge well understood, a moral tax policy demands tough budgeting.

Finally, a lesson about politics. The popularity of Harding and Coolidge, and the success of their policies—especially Coolidge’s—following a long period of Progressive ascendancy, should give today’s conservatives hope. Coolidge in the 1920s, like Grover Cleveland in the previous century, distinguished government austerity from private-sector austerity, combined a policy of deficit cuts with one of tax cuts, and made a moral case for saying “no.” A political leader who does the same today is likely to find an electorate more inclined to respond “yes” than he or she expects.

barbaryvsAmericaThe Boston bombings, the Fort Hood shootings, the events of 9/11, and numerous international Islamic terrorist activities are only new to people who have no sense of history.

Most Americans are familiar with the first line of the United States Marine Corps hymn, “From the halls of Montezuma[1] to the shores of Tripoli” but most likely don’t know the source of the “Tripoli” reference. The line “to the shores of Tripoli” refers to the First Barbary War, specifically the Battle of Derna, that took place in 1805.
Our earliest founders were familiar with the terrorist ways of radical Islamists. Thomas Jefferson, who was serving as the ambassador to France, and John Adams, the Ambassador to Britain, met in London with Ambassador Abdrahaman, the Dey of Tripoli’s ambassador to Britain, in an attempt to negotiate a peace treaty. Peace for an Islamist means surrender to Islam.

Peace would come at a price. If America wanted “temporary peace,” a one-year guarantee, it would cost $66,000 plus a 10% commission. “Everlasting peace” was a bargain at $160,000 plus the obligatory commission. This only applied to Tripoli. Other Muslim nations would also have to be paid. The amount came to $1.3 million. But there was no assurance that the treaties would be honored. In vain, Jefferson and Adams tried to argue that America was not at war with Tripoli. In what way had the U.S provoked the Muslims, they asked? Ambassador Abdrahaman went on to explain “the finer points of Islamic jihad” to the Koranically challenged Jefferson and Adams. In a letter to John Jay, Jefferson wrote the following:

“The Ambassador answered us that it was founded on the Laws of their Prophet, that it was written in their Koran, that all nations who should not have acknowledged their authority were sinners, that it was their right and duty to make war upon them wherever they could be found, and to make slaves of all they could take as Prisoners, and that every Musselman [Muslim] who should be slain in battle was sure to go to Paradise.”[2]

Abdrahaman was paraphrasing the Koran’s “rules of engagement” found in the 47 Surah: “Whenever you encounter the ones who disbelieve [during wartime], seize them by their necks until once you have subdued them, then tie them up as prisoners, either in order to release them later on, or also to ask for ransom, until war lays down her burdens.”
Unless a nation submits to Islam — whether it was the aggressor or not — that nation was by definition at war with Islam. Jihad means “to submit.” A non-aggressing nation is still at war with Islam as long as it hasn’t embraced Islam. Islam’s goal is to conquer the world, either by the submission of one’s will or by Allah’s sword.
Paul Johnson writes:

On the contrary, the history of Islam from Arabia was followed by the rapid conquest of North Africa, the invasion and virtual conquest of Spain, and a thrust into France that carried the crescent to the gates of Paris. It took half a millennium or reconquest to expel the Moslems from Western Europe. The Crusades, far from being an outrageous prototype of Western imperialism, as is taught in most of our schools, were a mere episode in a struggle that has lasted 1,400 years and were one of the few occasions when Christians took the offensive to regain the “occupied territories” of the Holy Land.”
When President Jefferson refused to increase the tribute demanded by the Islamists, Tripoli declared war on the United States. A United States navy squadron, under Commander Edward Preble, blockaded Tripoli from 1803 to 1805. After rebel soldiers from Tripoli, led by United States Marines, captured the city of Derna, the Pasha of Tripoli signed a treaty promising to exact no more tribute.

President Obama is not the first person who has tried to whitewash Islam’s history and sell us on the peaceful motives of Muslims. Rep. Keith Ellison (D-Minn.), a Muslim, took his constitutional oath on Jefferson’s copy of the Koran. How ironic given Jefferson’s disdain for Islam’s double dealings.

Jefferson, embroiled in a war with Islamic terrorists in his day, commented, “Too long, for the honor of nations, have those Barbarians been suffered [permitted] to trample on the sacred faith of treaties, on the rights and laws of human nature!”[4] Little has changed since Jefferson’s day.

What the Left and Sharia Law have in Common

You know, minus the terrorism. Let’s look at the similarities. For the kind of Islamists we’re talking about, the Sharia Islamists, there is no authority but Islam. To the left, there is no authority but themselves. They respect and recognize no other authority. They don’t recognize the authority of elections. They don’t recognize the authority of public opinion. They don’t recognize the authority of the Constitution, even though they all swear an oath. Why do you think we require everybody in government to swear an oath to the Constitution?

‘Cause that’s glue, folks. That’s the glue that keeps everything together. The reason all of these oaths of office and oaths of naturalization require pledging fidelity to the Constitution is that that is supposed to be the compact that unites all of us. Winning or losing, we are united as Americans, defined by our Constitution. Swearing the oath announces the understandings based on which we become “we, the people.” If you have a huge movement in the country that’s not just rejecting but actively undermining the Constitution, then it becomes a real question.

And once that group becomes big enough — a majority of the population — then it becomes questionable whether we even have a “we, the people” anymore. And this behavior is very, very close to Sharia Islam. There is no authority but Islam. It’s a core tenet: The ruler must be obeyed as long as he complies and enforces Sharia. And if the rural abandons Sharia, they assassinate him like in the case of Anwar Sadat or Mubarak. Now, they don’t do assassinations here, but if the left’s leader abandons them, you know what happens to them.

They’re immediately forgotten, destroyed, cast aside, and ruined. But here, let me try it a different way. If Islamists are in the role of Democrats in my analogy, Americans assume the role of the GOP. We proclaim that our commitment to tolerance means that we have to make room at the table even for Islamists and people we disagree with. Notwithstanding that they deny our right to govern ourselves under our own principles. In other words, you’ve heard people say, “The Constitution is not a suicide pact.”

RUSH: My point is to the left, the Democrat Party, the media — however you want to describe ’em — everything but what they believe and everything but who they believe is illegitimate. There is no crossing the aisle. There is no compromise. There is no working together to prove Washington or government works. There is only one way. When they are in power, they pretend it’s because their beliefs are a popular mandate. But that is disproven every time they lose. Their views cannot be the result of a popular mandate; otherwise, they would never lose elections. When they lose elections — when they’re not in power — their beliefs dictate that everything else must be delegitimized, and that’s exactly what we’re seeing today. Everything about this Russian collusion and everything about Susan Rice and all of these investigations and the leaking, it’s all about delegitimizing the duly elected, constitutionally legal president and Congress. It’s about delegitimizing that. It’s not about working with them. It’s not about them having a head case and not understanding yet that they lost. It’s not about that they’re gonna come to their senses down the road.

There is always a pretense that they represent the popular mandate, when they very rarely really do.

WASHINGTON – Why would President Obama, who professes to be a Christian, apparently harbor such animosity toward what he claims is his own faith?

ObamaPrayerHighHorseThe latest example came during his remarks Thursday at the National Prayer Breakfast, but it was hardly the first time Obama has criticized Christianity or defended Islam.

In order to better understand what Obama truly believes, WND looked at the history of Obama’s relationship with religion, beginning with those most recent remarks.

“And lest we get on our high horse and think that this is unique to some other place, remember that during the Crusades and Inquisition, people committed terrible deeds in the name of Christ,” Obama said at the breakfast.

“In our home country, slavery and Jim Crow all too often was justified in the name of Christ,” he added.

Incensed critics are interpreting those remarkable words as both an attack on Christianity and a defense of Muslim atrocities.

As WND reported, among the many Christian leaders outraged by the president’s comments, one Catholic leader called for Obama to apologize, pointedly noting that the Inquisition was political, and the Crusades were a defensive effort against jihad.

Obama’s remarks came just two days after the release of a video of the burning death of a captured Jordanian pilot by ISIS and just one day after word that the radical Islamic army is selling, as well as crucifying, children.

WND CEO Joseph Farah interpreted Obama’s remarks as an excuse of Islam, by drawing an equivalence between the current murderous reign of terror perpetuated by Muslim radicals and long-past misdeeds by Christians long-since condemned by virtually all Christians.

Marc Thiessen, former chief speechwriter for President George W. Bush, was incredulous, stating on Fox News Thursday evening, “It was evangelical Christians who fought slavery and Jim Crow. It was William Wilberforce who led the campaign against slavery. It was Martin Luther King who fought (segregation.)”

Thiessen wondered why the president would criticize those who criticize ISIS atrocities, asking, “What does he mean by get off our high horse? And what kind of person looks at a video of a man being burned alive and his reaction is to say ‘Let’s not forget, we in the West did that, too’?”

“With all due respect, the Crusades were almost a thousand years ago. The Inquisition was in the 15th century. ISIS is burning people alive today. Now. Not Christians,” he added. [The Crusades were an attempt to stop the spread of violent Islam; Read More ]

Thiessen drew a parallel of his own in Obama’s comparison, remarking, “It’s fascinating that he said people committed terrible deeds in the name of Christ. Has he ever said ISIS has committed terrible deeds in the name of Muhammad? Or in the name of Islam? No. … He said they kill in the name of religion. He won’t call it Islamic radicalism, which is a problem.”

Obama made another remark the Christian faithful may find particularly perplexing, implying their religion is not necessarily more true than any other faith:

“I believe that the starting point of faith is some doubt – not being so full of yourself and so confident that you are right and that God speaks only to us, and doesn’t speak to others, that God only cares about us and doesn’t care about others, that somehow we alone are in possession of the truth.”

As to what Obama believes is the truth, a  look at his past comments and actions regarding religion, especially Christianity, may be illustrative.

References to God removed

Obama has a history of omitting references to God and Christianity.

Two years ago, WND reported he issued a statement endorsing the National Day of Prayer but excised virtually any reference to Christianity, the primary faith of the nation’s founders.

decofindependence1In 2009, he did cite the prayers of the Continental Congress and President Lincoln’s call for prayer during the Civil War. But he started turning the next year, mentioning “God” only twice, asking for “blessings” and “guidance.” The closest reference to the nation’s Christian heritage was a reference that the U.S. “counts freedom of conscience and free exercise of religion among its most fundamental principles.”

By 2012, Obama’s proclamation was merely giving thanks “for our democracy that respects the beliefs and protects the religious freedom of all people to pray, worship, or abstain.”

In 2013, his text included “faith” only to reference it as “our faith” and recognized “God” only for delivering liberties and guidance.

Obama has repeatedly removed the phrase “endowed by their Creator” from the line in the Declaration of Independence that reads:

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

In 2013, WND reported that eventual GOP presidential candidate Herman Cain believed that was no slip of the tongue, saying, “I believe it was intentional because he did it three times.”

He added, “With all of his teleprompters, how could you not put that in there? No. I believe it was intentional.”

By WND columnist Chuck Norris’ count, Obama dropped “their Creator” seven times in just a two-month span in 2012.

In 2009, WND reported Obama, while admitting that America has “a very large Christian population,” told the Turkish press that “we do not consider ourselves a Christian nation.”

And in December 2010 , a letter from the Congressional Prayer Caucus rebuked Obama for incorrectly replacing the nation’s motto of “In God We Trust” with “E pluribus unum” in a speech at the University of Indonesia.

Defense of Islam

In a speech given to the United Nations General Assembly on Sept. 12, 2012, the president declared, “The future must not belong to those who slander the prophet of Islam.”

In a speech in Cairo, Egypt, in June 2009, Obama said that he felt it “part of my responsibility as president of the United States to fight against negative stereotypes of Islam wherever they appear.”

Also in 2009, Obama told a French reporter, “[I]f you actually took the number of Muslim Americans, we’d be one of the largest Muslim countries in the world.” (In fact, in 2008 Christians made up 76-percent of the population at 173 million, religious Jews 1.2-percent at 2.6 million, and Muslims only 0.6-percent at 1.3 million.)

And in May 2011, WND learned that in October 2009, one of Obama’s faith advisers, Eboo Patel, a Muslim activist from Chicago, compared al-Qaeda to what he called Christian “totalitarians” in the U.S. and Jewish “totalitarians” in Israel.

In February 2010, Obama named Patel to his Advisory Council on Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships.

Patel is part of the official speaker’s bureau of the Islamic Society of North America, an unindicted co-conspirator in a scheme to raise money for Hamas.

Anti-Christian policies

Obama_emperorPerhaps the most infamous example of what critics consider Obama administration hostility toward Christians was the demand by the IRS that conservative groups applying for tax-exempt status reveal the contents of their prayers.

A letter from the IRS to Coalition for Life of Iowa read, “Please detail the content of the members of your organization’s prayers.”

Another applicant was asked, “Please explain how all of your activities, including the prayer meetings held outside of Planned Parenthood, are considered educational as defined under 501(c)(3).”

Critics also say the Obama administration tried to crush First Amendment religious rights of Christians by mandating employers provide certain kinds of contraceptives, including abortion-inducing drugs, which many Christians found objectionable and immoral.

The Supreme Court sided with those Christians by ruling 5-to-4 in favor of the plaintiffs and against the government in Burwell v. Hobby Lobby on June 30, 2014.

Not only many Christians, but many former and active members of the military, have been chagrined by Obama’s normalization of the homosexual lifestyle in the nation’s armed forces.

In a video interview, now-retired Coast Guard Commandant Adm. Robert Papp revealed that Obama personally threatened to fire any service leaders who disagreed with the president’s decision to repeal the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy toward homosexuals in the military.

“We were called into the Oval Office, and President Obama looked all five service chiefs in the eye and said, ‘This is what I want to do.’ I cannot divulge everything he said to us, that’s private communications within the Oval Office, but if we didn’t agree with it — if any of us didn’t agree with it — we all had the opportunity to resign our commissions and go do other things,” said Papp.

Military chaplains reportedly are also under threat by regulations that now prevent them from speaking against homosexuality.

The Family Research Council has documented scores of instances in which the military under Obama has threatened service members participating in religious (primarily Christian) expression.

WND reported how U.S. Army soldiers at a Mississippi post were instructed that the American Family Association, or AFA, was a “hate group” because the radical leftist Southern Poverty Law Center had advised the military that the AFA’s view of homosexuality, informed by traditional values, was hateful.

The U.S. military teaching that the American colonists were “extremists” was traced also back to the Southern Poverty Law Center.

Judicial Watch, a government corruption monitor, said it obtained records regarding the “preparation and presentation of training materials on hate groups or hate crimes distributed or used by the Air Force.”

The teaching claimed: “In U.S. history, there are many examples of extremist ideologies and movements. The colonists who sought to free themselves from British rule and the Confederate states who sought to secede from the Northern states are just two examples.”

The attacks by Muslims who killed nearly 3,000 people on Sept. 11, 2001, were called a ‘historical event.”

The administration’s efforts to enforce acceptance of the homosexual lifestyle extend well beyond the military and affect every federal employee.

In May 2013, WND columnist Matt Barber revealed the existence of an internal Justice Department document that forced managers to accept the administrations policies on homosexuality, or else.

Titled, “LGBT Inclusion at Work: The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Managers,” the document stated that when it comes to LGBT pride, employees were ordered: “DON’T remain silent. Silence will be interpreted as disapproval.”

The document also recommends managers, “Attend LGBT events sponsored by DOJ Pride and/or the Department, and invite (but don’t require) others to join you,” and, “Display a symbol in your office (DOJ Pride sticker, copy of this brochure, etc.) indicating that it is a ‘safe space.’”

Not defending Christians

In October 2013 WND covered a speech by Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., in which he warned, “there is a worldwide war on Christianity,” but, “The president tries to gloss over who’s attacking and killing Christians.”

The senator cited a list of atrocities around the world by radical Islamists, including Syria, where “Islamic rebels have filmed beheadings of their captives.”

“They’ve filmed themselves eating the heart of their enemy. Two Christian bishops have been kidnapped, and one priest was recently killed. These rebels are allies of the Islamic rebels that President Obama is now arming.”

“We are now arming Islamic rebels who are allied with al-Qaida that attacked us on 9/11. Does that make any sense at all?” he concluded.

Rep. Trent Franks, R-Ariz., expressed the sentiments of many Obama critics who charge he has done little to prevent or stop the widespread martyrdom of Christians in Islamic lands, including Iraq and Syria.

Pointing out the extreme dangers Christians face worldwide, in September 2014, Franks said Obama administration officials “only respond when the politics become so antithetical to them that they have to.”

“I been extremely critical of president Obama and it’s primarily for that reason. It seemed like whenever there’s suffering of the innocent, whether it’s the unborn at the hands of [abortionist] Kermit Gosnell, innocent people at the hands of [Syrian president] Bashar Assad or innocent Coptic Christians in the hands of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt, or innocent Christians at the hands of ISIS in Iraq,” he said.

In August 2013, hundreds of Coptic Christians in Nashville, Tennessee, took to the streets to call out Obama after members of the Muslim Brotherhood, the group that temporarily seized power in Egypt and was backed by the administration, burned scores of Coptic Christian churches, schools and businesses.

Protesters chanted, “Obama, Obama, don’t you care? Christian blood is everywhere.”

In May 2012, WND reported an Obama administration official claimed the ongoing Muslim destruction of churches and slaughter of Christians in Nigeria, including many murdered during worship services, was the result of tribal disputes over land, not a religious conflict.

A U.S. aide agency was tasked with analyzing the “true” causes of the conflict.

Scriptural confusion

Obama, who professes to be a Christian, has expressed many fundamental beliefs with which most Christians would likely find flabbergasting, and disagree.

He’s not sure there is an afterlife, or a heaven or hell. He has confessed he is not “sure what happens when we die.”

In a 2006 “Call to Renewal” keynote address in Washington, he said: “Even those who claim the Bible’s inerrancy make distinctions between scriptural edicts – sensing that some passages are central to Christian faith, while others are more culturally specific and may be modified to accommodate modern life.”

In his memoir, “Audacity of Hope,” Obama said he believed in the evolution of man from primates and did not believe, “as many evangelicals do,” that the Bible is without error.

Essentially calling most Catholics hypocrites, Obama accused Christians of routinely modifying their doctrinal beliefs for personal or political reasons, “Which is why the majority of Catholics practice birth control.”

He added that he viewed the biblical condemnation of homosexuality as confined to “an obscure line in Romans.”

In a 2004 Chicago Sun-Times interview, Obama said:

“I am a Christian. I’m rooted in the Christian tradition. I believe that there are many paths to the same place, and that is a belief that there is a higher power, a belief that we are connected as a people. That there are values that transcend race or culture, that move us forward, and there’s an obligation for all of us individually as well as collectively to take responsibility to make those values lived.”

“This is the antithesis of what Jesus reveals in Scripture, for example, in John 14:6: ‘Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.’”

I think I have an ongoing conversation with God. … I’m constantly asking myself questions about what I’m doing, why I am doing it. The biggest challenge, I think, is always maintaining your moral compass.’

“So whom,” Farah asked, “is he talking to in these conversations? He’s talking to himself! He’s talking to his under-developed conscience – the one that told him it was the right thing to do to prevent doctors and nurses from offering life-saving support to babies born alive after botched abortions.”

As for the afterlife, Farah also observed that Obama “suggests his eternal destination has something to do with being a ‘good father’ to his children and transferring values he got from his atheist mother,” before concluding Obama “doesn’t have a clue as to what it means to be a Christian.”

Obama’s true faith?

Obama himself has often sparked questions about his true faith.

“My Christian faith” Obama repeated before continuing.

In February 2012, Rev. Franklin Graham revealed that President Obama confided to him and his father during a recent visit to North Carolina: “I don’t go to church.”

“I have no idea what he really believes,” Graham said during an appearance on MSNBC.

The following is a 2007 Obama campaign flyer that describes the future president as a “committed Christian” who believes in the “power of prayer”:
Leftist Bill Maher, host of HBO’s “Real Time,” doubted Obama is a practicing Christian.

“I just don’t believe it,” he said in 2012.

Maher suspects the president is an atheist.

Former GOP presidential contender Rick Santorum said Obama follows a “phony theology” not based on the Bible and preached by radicals, having learned such by attending the Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago for 20 years and listening to the sermons of the radical leftist Rev. Jeremy Wright, the president’s former pastor.

Obama said the title of his 2006 memoir, “The Audacity of Hope,” was inspired by one of Wright’s sermons.

Shortly after the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, Wright declared “America’s chickens are coming home to roost.”

Obama has long denied he was ever a Muslim.

But as WND reported, public records in Indonesia listed Obama as a Muslim during his early years, and a number of childhood friends claimed to the media Obama was once a mosque-attending Muslim.

A Los Angeles Times report quoted a childhood friend stating Obama prayed in a mosque – something the then-presidential candidate said he never did. Obama’s campaign released a statement explaining the senator had never been a “practicing Muslim.”

Widely distributed reports noted that in January 1968, Obama was registered as a Muslim at Jakarta’s Roman Catholic Franciscus Assisi Primary School under the name Barry Soetoro. He was listed as an Indonesian citizen whose stepfather, listed on school documents as “L Soetoro Ma,” worked for the topography department of the Indonesian Army.
After attending the Assisi Primary School, Obama was enrolled – also as a Muslim, according to documents – in the Besuki Primary School, a public school in Jakarta.

The Loatze blog, run by an American expatriate in Southeast Asia who visited the Besuki school, noted: “All Indonesian students are required to study religion at school, and a young ‘Barry Soetoro,’ being a Muslim, would have been required to study Islam daily in school.

“He would have been taught to read and write Arabic, to recite his prayers properly, to read and recite from the Quran and to study the laws of Islam.”

Indeed, in his autobiography, “Dreams From My Father,” Obama acknowledged studying the Quran and described the public school as “a Muslim school.”

“In the Muslim school, the teacher wrote to tell mother I made faces during Quranic studies,” wrote Obama.

The Los Angeles Times, which sent a reporter to Jakarta, quoted Zulfin Adi, who identified himself as among Obama’s closest childhood friends, stating the presidential candidate prayed in a mosque, something Obama’s campaign claimed he never did.

In a free-ranging interview with the New York Times, Obama described the Muslim call to prayer as “one of the prettiest sounds on Earth at sunset.”

The Times’ Nicholos Kristof wrote Obama recited, “with a first-class [Arabic] accent,” the opening lines of the Muslim call to prayer.

The first few lines of the call to prayer state:

Fire Departments around the St. Louis County Area put out 25 structural fires caused by vandals and looters following the announcement from the grand jury that Ferguson Police Officer Darren Wilson would not be indicted in the death of Mike Brown.

In the aftermath of Monday night’s rioting and looting in Ferguson, Missouri, there’s a question as to why the National Guard was not deployed to quell the violence, and some are speculating President Obama and Attorney General Eric Holder may have encouraged the lack of action.

“Somebody wanted this to happen,” declared radio host Rush Limbaugh on his national broadcast Wednesday.

“The ongoing theory is that the White House or Washington – the DOJ, Eric Holder – called the governor of Missouri, Jay Nixon, and told him not to deploy the Guard. Because it looks like they were ready to go. They had been called up and they were placed on ready status. And then they were not used. And the feeling is that the order came from some high authority in Washington not to deploy them. I don’t know why.

“It is a mystery as to why. Speculate is about all we can do. Why would the DOJ, why would Holder, why would Obama not want the Guard in position to stop some of this? Based on everything we know now, why would that be preferred?”
Limbaugh added: “We all knew what was coming. It was scripted. Nobody made a move to stop it! The cameras were in place. The media was in place. The only question was: How many cars will burn? How many stores will be destroyed? How many Molotov cocktails? Just how big the destruction? No effort to stop it. The media didn’t want it stopped. It was great programming. That’s why I say get the cameras out of there and a lot less of this kind of crap goes on but that’s never gonna happen either.”

obamaangryPresident Barack Obama himself, speaking to the nation from the White House after a grand jury cleared Officer Darren Wilson in the shooting death of Michael Brown, said, “There is inevitably going to be some negative reaction, and it will make for good TV.”

As numerous businesses were being looted or razed Monday night, Ferguson Mayor James Knowles told the local Fox affiliate: “I’ve requested the National Guard troops to come out from their command post to help restore order along the business district. We have not seen that … Those calls have gone unheeded at this point … We need to have the governor step up and give us the resources that he’s promised from the beginning. He said he would have a strong response. The resources necessary would be provided. They have not been provided so far.”
Tuesday morning, Missouri Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder, a Republican, asked if the Obama administration pressured Gov. Nixon, a Democrat, to ignore pleas from the mayor to send in the Guard.

“He (Gov. Nixon) declared a state of emergency almost a week ago and mobilized the National Guard. Then they were kept away at the crucial time while Ferguson burned,” Kinder said.

“We know they were kept away because they did not come in and stop that from the get-go. They were deployed in other parts of the St. Louis region … . Why were they not in there at the first sign of an overturned police car or a smashed police car window with a show of force that would have stopped this?

“Here’s my question that the governor must answer: Is the reason that the National Guard was not in there because the Obama Administration and the Holder Justice Department leaned on you to keep them out? I cannot imagine any other reason why the governor who mobilized the National Guard would not have them in there to stop this.”
Wednesday, Kinder pushed on with his concern, telling radio host Laura Ingraham he suspected someone in the Obama White House – Valerie Jarrett or Holder – of pressuring Nixon to have the Guard stand down.

The majority of stores damaged or completely destroyed during Monday’s riots in Ferguson were minority owned, reports KMOV-TV.

Some of the stores suffering severe damage include Walgreens, Little Caesar’s Pizza, Autozone, Beauty Town, Title Max, Family Dollar Store, and O’Reilly Auto Parts.

Media outlets showed cake-shop owner Natalie Dubose in tears when she realized vandals had attacked her small business.

Was Murdered Ferguson Man A Grand Jury Witness?

Questions are swirling over the unexplained murder of DeAndre Joshua, found dead in his car on Tuesday morning, with some speculating that the 20-year-old may have been the victim of a retribution killing for testifying in front of the grand jury in the Michael Brown shooting case.
Joshua was found dead inside a parked car near Ferguson’s Canfield Green Apartments around 9 a.m. Tuesday, just two blocks from where Brown was gunned down by Officer Darren Wilson.

According to one resident, four individuals were overheard discussing plans to kill somebody on Monday night.

The New York Daily News reports that Joshua’s family is, “positive his death is tied to the demonstrations over a grand jury’s decision not to indict Michael Brown’s killer.”

Joshua was described as a “good kid” who was not into drugs and had a steady job.

“DeAndre Joshua, 20, fits the social profile of an eye-witness who gave a police/FBI statement and testified before the Grand Jury in the Mike Brown shooting case,” writes the Conservative Treehouse blog. “He was an employed black male, with no history of drug use or illicit behavior. He was also a friend of Dorian Johnson who is currently under protection.”

A Facebook post by Johnson, who was with Michael Brown at the time of the shooting, appears to confirm that the two knew each other.

“We must seek justice for the innocent residents of Ferguson who have been harmed by those who do not respect the rule of law,” he said. “Freedom Watch will not stand by idly while the city burns and lives are lost as a result of unwarranted criminal acts that are both harmful and deadly.”

RUSH: Now, this story about black activists trashing and dumping the Democrat Party, it’s out of Chicago.  It is Chicago activists.  It’s a video.  It’s just been posted by Drudge on his home page, and I’ve got the eager staff working on putting that video together so I can share it with you.  But here are some quotes from the video.  All I know is, these are Chicago political activists, and they’re fed up.

They’re fed up with the Democrat Party.  “My life has been hurt by Democrats.  Everything wrong in our community is under Democrats.  Black leadership’s abusing us; Democrat leadership is abusing us.  We want an opportunity to own businesses.”  It’s a long rant.  It runs four minutes.  It’s four or five black men just taking down the Democrat Party.  They’re urging people to vote.

Well, now, this may be in the category Too Good to Be True.  I mean, this is the kind of thing I was expecting. All I’m gonna say is, you know, over the course these 25 years, I’ve asked openly: “When is it gonna dawn on people that the people they’re counting on are making their lives worse?  When’s it gonna dawn on them?”

WATKINS: This lot where I stand at right now ought to be housing, public housing for people to live in. Most of the people are homeless, living in the street, and it’s because of you, Mr. President.

MCKINLEY: The only thing they’re offering the black community is abortion on demand. This is what the President [Obama] is asking us to vote for.

CARTER: Now he wants to have this conversation about a minimum wage raise because he knows this is the way to get a lot of the poor people’s attention. But to hell with his minimum wage raise! We don’t have any jobs. A minimum wage raise for what?

MCKINLEY: They’re not pushing a black agenda. They’re not pushing a family agenda. They’re pushing a neo-liberal agenda.

CARTER: Across this city in these major Democratic cities, this is what it looks like.

RUSH:  These guys are in Chicago.  They’re nailing it.  They’re saying things that, if anybody else other than them says, it’s heap big doo-doo.  They were still not finished. There was more.

WARD: (music/outdoor noise) How can the same process happen over and over again and nobody can do nothing about it?

MCKINLEY: Black leadership is abusing us. The Democratic Party is abusing us.

WARD: Its the same way in every black community across the country.

CARTER: And they force us into a life of welfare. We don’t want no welfare! We want opportunities to go to work. We want opportunities to own businesses. They bailed out all of the major banks and these big investors, but left the people starving.

MCKINLEY: There are no Tea Parties in your city. We don’t have those people.

CARTER: We have a major Democratic machine — and the majority of them, they look like me! These are the people who make sure we get nothing, but then turn around and have us vote for them again.

WARD: They only come around when its time for elections, when they think they can give you a toy or give you a turkey or something and everything is good.

RUSH:  They’re right about that, too.  They come around and warn ’em about how bad the Republicans are gonna be to ’em. They come back and warn ’em about how mean the Republicans are gonna be, and they come around and they warn ’em that this is gonna happen and that’s gonna happen.

Meanwhile, these guys are taking note of what has been happening under Democrat Party rule and denomination. All of these cities are run by Democrats. They’re taking stock and taking note of conditions that black people live under in these places run by Democrats, black and white.  I’ve not… Look, we’ve had calls over the course of the program here from individuals who have said things like that.

But never from the street level.  We’re never had any guys like this call.  Well, maybe a couple.  I wouldn’t know for sure.  But this is intense, and it is serious, and these guys mean it.  They certainly understand it’s liberalism doing them in.  There’s no “black agenda.” There’s not. This is “a neo-liberal agenda” they’re talking about.  Here’s the final bite.  This runs just under a minute.

What we do see is our elected officials riding around in new cars and they have new homes.

MCKINLEY: When our people don’t have jobs in our communities, when we don’t have any vital resources — when all the deals have been cut and all our people are left out — this is where we end up.

WARD: And we got the most important thing that we got. We can stop all this.  Everybody’s gotta vote, and if you use your vote wisely, you can stop a lot of this stuff.

RUSH:  These guys are out on a get-out-the-vote campaign except it’s unlike any I have ever seen.  These guys are in a get-out-the-vote campaign, and they are urging people to vote against the status quo, and that is the Democrat Party running the show.  And they’re right.  Look at all the money supposedly over the years, billions that’s been allocated to wipe out these horrible circumstances that poor people, black and white, live under.  It’s actually trillions since 1964, and it’s the same percentage of people in poverty, and black people the worse.

Something else these guys have noticed.  There ain’t no Tea Party here. Don’t tell us the Tea Party is hurting us.  There isn’t any Tea Party here.  All we got are Democrats running our show.  There is no Tea Party here in Chicago.  Don’t tell us about the Tea Party.  There aren’t any white people turning off the water in Detroit. There aren’t any Republicans doing that to us. 

It’s inescapably true.  Everything these guys are saying.  What are you smirking about in there, Mr. Snerdley?  (interruption)  Oh, you love it, you’re not dubious about this?  (interruption)  No, no.  I know.  This couldn’t come at a better time, and it’s right on the streets in Chicago.  Again, these guys that you were just listening to, they are Chicago activists Paul McKinley, Mark Carter, Joseph Watkins and Harold “Noonie” Ward, and they made these statements I guess in an interview at a website called RebelPundit.com.

In fact, you probably have heard this by now.  Sarah Palin, back in 2008, predicted and warned that Russia was gonna take Ukraine.  She was laughed at.  She was mocked and made fun of because, of course, that was the narrative. Sarah Palin never said was she an expert on the Soviet Union ’cause she could see it from her backyard.  Tina Fey said that in a comedy sketch.  Palin never said it, yet it was attributed to her.

Romney, I remember this in a presidential debate like it was yesterday.  Probably the second debate, Romney is warning of Russia as our number one geopolitical enemy, and Obama is sitting there and mocking him and laughing at him and making fun of him like he can’t believe what he just heard and everybody knows it’s Al-Qaeda.  And look at what’s happening here.  All the people who’ve been insulted as dumb and stupid and idiotic and don’t know what they’re talking about are being borne out.  There were people — I’ll leave myself out of this — there were people eight years ago warning that Putin existed to rebuild the Soviet Union.  The Washington establishment hemmed and hawed and huffed and puffed and laughed, said nothing could be further from the truth.  The best and the brightest had no clue.

So again, here’s this little piece, Washington Post editorial, “For five years, President Obama has led a foreign policy based more on how he thinks the world should operate than on reality. It was a world in which ‘the tide of war is receding’ and the United States could, without much risk, radically reduce the size of its armed forces. Other leaders, in this vision, would behave rationally and in the interest of their people and the world. Invasions, brute force, great-power games and shifting alliances — these were things of the past. Secretary of State John F. Kerry displayed this mindset on ABC’s ‘This Week’ Sunday when he said, of Russia’s invasion of neighboring Ukraine, ‘It’s a 19th century act in the 21st century.'” I highlighted that yesterday about how absolutely inane that is.

So here you have Kerry complaining that Putin is using old-fashioned, infantry type tactics.  And that’s not the kind of world we have anymore.  Doesn’t he know he’s cheating?  He can’t do that.  He’s violating agreements.  And the Washington Post is beside itself now.  Oh, my God.  OMG.  What in the world is happening?  Now that this has found its away into the arena of foreign policy, now all of a sudden the glaring obvious incompetence of this whole Regime is now worrisome.

“Unfortunately, Russian President Vladimir Putin has not received the memo on 21st-century behavior. Neither has China’s president, Xi Jinping, who is engaging in gunboat diplomacy against Japan and the weaker nations of Southeast Asia. Syrian president Bashar al-Assad is waging a very 20th-century war against his own people, sending helicopters to drop exploding barrels full of screws, nails and other shrapnel onto apartment buildings where families cower in basements.”  All of a sudden now it matters.

Toward the end of the editorial, the Post writes, “Military strength, trustworthiness as an ally, staying power in difficult corners of the world such as Afghanistan — these still matter…” Do you know what kind of slice that is?  I mean, that’s right at Obama, because he’s out there saying none of this stuff matters anymore.  We’re not a superpower.  It’s none of our business what these other people around the world are doing.

We’re gonna get out of it! We don’t care!

That is irresponsible and frightening.  Even these people at the Post say, Uh-oh! Oh, no.  “While the United States has been retrenching,” retreating — I’m adding the words — and withdrawing, “the tide of democracy in the world … has been receding. In the long run, that’s harmful to US national security, too.” No kidding!  We are the leader of the free world.  If we get out of it, so will democracy elsewhere.

Ours is a world governed by the aggressive use of force, and it always has been.  It’s not something specific to the Twenty-First Century.  Vladimir Putin’s not doing something that previous Soviet leaders have never done.  The ChiCom leader is not doing something that Mao Tse-tung didn’t do.  There’s nothing here that’s new.  It’s nothing but reality going on here.  We’ve got a fantasyland administration trying to deny that.

These sanctimonious people in the media all of a sudden now see Obama’s nothing but smoke and mirrors.  You want to say that his foreign policy is fantasy misses the point that Obama himself is a fantasy.  It’s just the same fantasy that the Drive-By Media made up and pushed.

The media constructed a fantasy, they plugged Obama into it, and they were off to the races.  It’s kind of infuriating to me.  None of this need be happening, is the point.  Their headline at the Washington Post is, “President Obama’s Foreign Policy is Based on Fantasy.” You have to wonder who hacked them.  This could be a hack.  But to ask whether or not they’ve finally awakened from their long peacenik slumber? No.

It’s just that this reality really matters.  Contraceptives, telling Catholic Church where to go, you know, War on Women, all that other crock and lies and BS to destroy the Republican Party, that’s fine. Whatever it takes to do that, that’s cool.  Whatever lie it takes — whatever distortion, whatever character assassination, whatever tactic is required to destroy the Republicans — we’re in there, and we’ll help you.  But don’t take that act of foreign policy, ’cause it’s serious out there.

The Truth is: Russian doctrine is a mutant of 20th Century Nazism

Lavrov’s rationale for Russia’s aggressive response is based on a change to Russian military doctrine implemented after the 2008 Russian-Georgian conflict that says Russia will send its troops anywhere to defend Russians.

After the 2008 war, Russia issued passports and granted citizenship to ethnic Russians in the captured Georgian provinces of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, both of which Russia later annexed.

The thrust of the doctrine could be interpreted as an open-ended means of committing “legal” aggression, since ethnic Russians occupy all of the independent countries that once comprised the Soviet Union

Israel can expect to face international isolation and possible sanctions from countries and companies across the world if Benjamin Netanyahu fails to endorse a framework agreement with the Palestinians, US President Barack Obama cautioned on Sunday ahead of a meeting with the Israeli prime minister.

 

In an interview with Bloomberg, Obama stressed that time was running out for Israel to achieve a peace deal, and added that he believed Netanyahu had the capacity to rally Israel’s citizens behind an agreement.

But if Netanyahu “does not believe that a peace deal with the Palestinians is the right thing to do for Israel, then he needs to articulate an alternative approach,” Obama said.

He stressed that Israel backs a diplomatic deal, provided it truly dismantles Iran’s military nuclear capabilities. But he warned, as he has from the same podium in past years, that the Jewish nation “will never be brought to the brink of extinction again” and that he would do “whatever I must do to defend the Jewish state of Israel.”
But whereas Obama had touted Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas as a leader demonstrably “committed to nonviolence and diplomatic efforts to resolve” the conflict, Netanyahu was far more skeptical. He received a standing ovation when he called on the Palestinians to “stop denying history” and urged Abbas to “recognize the Jewish state.” If Abbas would only tell his people of the Jewish nation’s sovereign rights, he could “finally make clear that you are truly prepared to end the conflict. No excuses. No delays. It’s time.”

A Rebirth of Liberty and Learning

There is a proper way to educate and there is a proper way to govern, and they are both known. Today we do these things in a different way, which presents a serious and perhaps fatal problem for our country. But repair is possible.

Take education first. The word “education” comes from a Latin word meaning “to lead forth.” And if you think about it, “forth” is a value-laden term. Which way is forth? The Bible tells us to “raise up a child in the way he should go.” But which way should he go? How does one come to know the answer to that? After almost 14 years as a college president I’m an expert on young people between 18 and 22, and I can tell you that if you ask a young person today which way is the right way to go, more often than not he or she will answer: “It depends on which way you want to go.” Young people today give that answer because they’ve been taught to give that answer. But it’s the wrong answer, and the activity of getting from there to the right answer—the activity of coming to know which way is the right way—is education. Thus “to lead forth.”

Two Ways of Education 

platoinlibraryAt Hillsdale College students read a lot of old books, including Plato’s Republic. In the Republic they read the story of Gyges’ ring—a ring that makes the wearer of it invisible. One of Socrates’ interlocutors in the Republic, a young man named Glaucon, raises the question: Why would a man in possession of such a ring not use it to do and obtain whatever he wishes? Why would he not use the ring’s powers, for instance, to become a tyrant? In response, Socrates turns the discussion to another question: What is the right way for a man to live? What is just by nature and what is unjust?

These Socratic questions were once at the center or core of education, and they remain at the center or core of education at Hillsdale College. But in American education as a whole, these questions have been abandoned.

platobookLet me give you two examples of how the new way of education differs from the old. One concerns the use of the word I just used—“core.” Here at Hillsdale we have a core curriculum—a thing most American colleges and universities have watered down or done away with—which is a core group of courses that all students, regardless of their major, are required to take. A true core, as I’ve described, has a unifying principle, such as the idea that there is a right way to live that one can come to know.

Compare that to the use of the same word in describing the latest bright idea of the education establishment—the so-called Common-Core—which is an attempt by bureaucrats and politicians to impose national standards on American schools. When one looks into Common-Core, it becomes clear that it has no unifying principle in the sense I have described. And it has destructive effects. But the point I want to make here is that its only stated object is career preparation.

Bereft of the kind of questions posed by Socrates in the Republic—or the kind of questions raised in the Bible, or in the plays of Shakespeare—modern education treats students chiefly as factors of production, as people to be trained for productive jobs. And although we all wish productive jobs for our children, as parents we know that they are not chiefly job seekers or factors of production. After all, how many of us, if we were given the choice of our children earning a lot of money and being bad, or struggling economically and being good, would choose the former?

My second example of the turn taken by modern education goes to the heart of the problem. Here is a passage from the Teacher’s Guide for Advanced Placement English Literature and Composition, published in 1991 by the College Board—the influential organization that, among other things, administers the SAT exam. It is written by an English professor from Agnes Scott College in Georgia.

. . . AP teachers are implementing the best of the new pedagogies that have influenced leading institutions of higher learning. Perhaps most importantly, as Arthur Applebee explains, “objectivity” and “factuality” have lost their preeminence. Instruction has become “less a matter of transmittal of an objective and culturally sanctioned body of knowledge,” and more a matter of helping individuals learn to construct their own realities. This moves English courses away from the concept of subject matter to be memorized and toward “a body of knowledge, skills, and strategies that must be constructed by the learner out of experiences and interactions within the social context of the classroom.” Emphasis is on the processes of language and thought, “processes that are shaped by a given cultural community and which also help students become part of the cultural community.” Contemporary educators no doubt hope students will shape values and ethical systems as they engage in these interactions, acquiring principles that will help them live in a mad, mad world (emphases added).

Could the difference be more stark between the older and newer ways of education? Between leading students toward an understanding of the right way to live in a comprehensible world, and telling them they must shape their own values and make their own reality in a world gone mad? And by the way, think of the definition of “reality”; then think of making one’s own reality. Do you see that it destroys the meaning of the word to use it that way? 

Two Ways of Governing

The difference between the old and the new way of governing is directly connected to this turn in education. One way to see the difference is to see that laws in America used to be simple and beautiful. They were written with care, and citizens could read them quickly and understand their meaning. Of the four organic laws that founded America—the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation, the Northwest Ordinance, and the Constitution of the United States—none of them was more than 4,500 words long.

The Northwest Ordinance, adopted in 1787 and passed again in 1789, contains the following beautiful sentence: “Religion, morality, and knowledge, being necessary for good government and the happiness of mankind, the means of education shall forever be encouraged.” Accordingly, Congress proceeded to give 1/36 of the land in the vast Northwest Territory—including Michigan and four other states—as an endowment, controlled by the states, to support education in each township. One of the finest laws written subsequently was the Homestead Act of 1862, by which ten percent of U.S. land—over 270 million acres—passed into the hands of individual citizens. The Homestead Act was 1,320 words in length.

Compare the Northwest Ordinance and the Homestead Act—perfect examples of the older, constitutional way of governing—with the new bureaucratic way of imposing central control through rules and processes that no one can understand. Compare them, for instance, to the Affordable Care Act, which when it was passed in 2010—and this does not include the countless rules and regulations it has generated over the past three years—ran to 363,086 words. This law—and in the true sense of the word it wasn’t a law at all, but something different—was not readable or comprehensible to any member of Congress who voted for it or to the citizens whose lives it was aimed at manipulating in a detailed and intrusive way. Could anything be uglier? And is it surprising, being governed in this way, that the richest nation in human history is going broke?

Let me mention two characteristics and dangers of the new way of governing. First, if you look at the size of the federal budget, you see that in economic terms the government is beginning to rival in size the rest of the country. Less and less do we have a large and thriving private sectorwhich is where the Constitution placed sovereignty—in control of a limited government that owes its authority to the governed.

That the Constitution placed sovereignty in the people, outside the government, means that the only way the people can maintain their sovereignty—the only way they can control the government—is through elections of representatives. But as the government becomes almost as big, in economic terms, as those who elect it, the government itself— with its clients and friends—becomes increasingly influential in the electoral process, while people who make their living independent of the government become less influential. This trend could prove fatal to our country, because at some point if it continues—and we can already see the beginnings with attempts to regulate political speechthe idea of free elections will become problematic.

My final point is that this new way of governing actively opposes America’s founding principles. Consider an example from the College’s recent history: What could more directly contradict America’s bedrock principle of human equality than the attempt by bureaucrats at the Department of Education to force Hillsdale, whose charter prohibited racial discrimination long before the Civil War, to count its students by the color of their skin?

James Madison is known as the Father of the Constitution, and when he suggested in the Federalist Papers that the Constitution receives its authority from the principles of the Declaration of Independence, he was expressing what was then the common view. Here is the famous statement of those principles:

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.—That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed,—That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of those ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government . . . .

Compare that confident statement of principles to this passage from President Obama’s 2006 book The Audacity of Hope:

Implicit in [the Constitution’s] structure, in the very idea of ordered liberty, was a rejection of absolute truth, the infallibility of any idea or ideology or theology or “ism,” any tyrannical consistency that might lock future generations into a single, unalterable course . . . (emphasis added).

impeach4constHow did Barack Obama come to believe something so foreign to America’s heritage as the idea that in the name of liberty we must reject absolute truths—which necessarily includes rejecting those truths I just quoted from the Declaration? And how is it—because this is a bipartisan problem—that not once in the course of two long presidential campaigns did an opponent of Barack Obama think to point out his unequivocal disagreement with the principles we celebrate as a nation on the Fourth of July? 

Do you recall what I said about the connection between the new way of education and the new way of governing? Given what is now taught in our schools, is it any wonder that our leaders today behave like wearers of Gyges’ ring who have not given thought to the questions raised by Socrates in the Republic, or to the connection between the principles of the Declaration of Independence and civil and religious liberty?

The means of repairing both education and government today is the activity that takes place at Hillsdale College. Through its undergraduate and graduate programs, its Kirby Center in Washington, D.C., its extensive online learning program, its charter school initiative, its multiple outreach activities, and its publications such as Imprimis, Hillsdale seeks to radiate that activity to every corner of the nation in every possible way. This is the work needed to save our country, and it is the purpose of Hillsdale’s “Rebirth of Liberty and Learning Campaign.”

obamaneroRUSH: Folks, you’ve heard the old saying, “Nero fiddled while Rome burned.” That is true. Rome was literally burning, and he could not have cared less. What people have forgotten about it is that Nero, he didn’t just fiddle while Rome burned; he started the fire. Nero wanted to burn down Rome in order to rebuild it in his own image. But to cover it up he blamed the Christians, who were then subsequently thrown to the lions.

Now, on my first trip to Rome, the tour guide told me that didn’t happen. He was interested in Rome not having a bad impression. He said, “You’ve heard that the Christians were given to the lions. It really didn’t happen,” he said. But, for all intents and purposes, it did. Now, if you ask me, the story of Nero fiddled while Rome burned and then adding to it he started the fire sounds familiar to me.

Barack Obama has, for five years, had control over the US economy. His policies, his specific economic policies are the reason this country is in dire economic straits. Obama’s policies are the reason why there is no recovery — and if you want to call it a recovery, go ahead. If you do, it’s the worst recovery in the history of this country. So there is an analogy, I think, to Nero here. Obama, by his own admission before he took office, during his campaign and after he was immaculated, bragged about transforming this country.

Immigration: Obama’s DHS Aids Human Traffickers Smuggling Illegals Into the US

Patricia Elizabeth Salmeron Santos had solicited human traffickers, of which Nava-Martinez is an admitted trafficker, to smuggle her daughter into Virginia. She eventually agreed to pay $8,500 (paying $6,000 in advance) to traffic her daughter into the country.

The Texas federal judge accused DHS of delivering children, illegally smuggled into the US to their illegal immigrant parents. “This action makes the DHS complicit in aiding that Mexican drug cartels that control the people smuggling rings,” writes Hanen. He added that the “government is not only allowing (illegal immigrants in the US) to fund the illegal and evil activities of these cartels, but is also inspiring them to do so.”

Judge Hanen wrote that in more than one case that has been before his court, members of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), a federal agency under DHS, have arrested human traffickers, who are smuggling children illegally into the US, then “delivering the minors to the custody of the parent illegally living in the United States.”

SC Bill Would Nullify Obamacare, Could Be Model for Others

obamadoctorA bill set for fast-track passage in the South Carolina Senate would effectively nullify Obamacare in that state – and could become a model for other states fed up with the president’s signature healthcare law.

House Bill 3101 passed the state House of Representatives in April and now heads to the Republican-controlled Senate with special-order priority, the Daily Caller reported Monday.

If the bill becomes law, South Carolina will be the first state to exempt citizens and businesses from all participation in the Affordable Care Act, the Daily Caller reported.

The bill’s sponsor, state Sen. Tom Davis, recently wrapped up study committee hearings in cities around the state, and says the proposed legislation would render Obamacare void or inoperable through a handful of provisions.

“It will essentially have five components to it, all of which, in my judgment, are legal, effective, and within the state’s power to do,” the Republican from Beaufort told the Daily Caller.

The bill’s main component prohibits agencies, officers and employees of the state from implementing any provisions of the Affordable Care Act, leaving implementation entirely in the hands of the federal government, which, Davis contends, lacks the resources or personnel to carry out the programs it mandates.

“What the Supreme Court said in Printz v. United States is that states are not merely political subdivisions of the federal government, to carry out what the federal government does; they are sovereign entities,” Davis told the Daily Caller.

Additional provisions of the bill would outlaw state exchanges, issuing tax deductions to persons equal to the tax penalties levied by the federal government, and directing the state attorney general to sue over whimsical enforcement of the law.

Taken together, the Daily Caller reported, the provisions would effectively repeal the federal law for the people of South Carolina.

jeffersontyrannygovGiven the majority of Republicans in the South Carolina Senate — along with moderate Democrats who may support the bill out of fear of voter wrath — the proposed legislation is likely to pass in short order and be signed into law by Gov. Nikki Haley, who has led South Carolina’s resistance to Obamacare.

Meanwhile, political forces on the left and right are gathering for battle, including local tea party groups mobilizing support – and opponents who have called supportive lawmakers racists and questioned the authority of states to oppose federal laws, the Daily Caller reported.

“God said the poor will always be with us. Not everyone can be helped,” Sue Burbach, of the South Carolina Progressive Network, said at a public hearing in Columbia, S.C., last month, The State reported.
