Von Mises Economics lesson: Capitalism works; Socialism fails

Dinner Topics for Thursday

keyIf we were to regard the Soviet regime as an experiment, we would have to say that the experiment has clearly demonstrated the superiority of capitalism and the inferiority of socialism.~Ludwig von Mises

From Wikipedia

Ludwig_von_MisesLudwig Heinrich Edler von Mises; 29 September 1881 – 10 October 1973) was a philosopher, Austrian School economist, sociologist, and classical liberal. He became a prominent figure in the Austrian School of economic thought and is best known for his work on praxeology. Fearing a Nazi takeover of Switzerland, where he was living at the time, Mises emigrated to the United States in 1940. Mises had a significant influence on the libertarian movement in the United States in the mid-20th century.

Work in the United States

In 1940 Mises and his wife fled the German advance in Europe and emigrated to New York City.[2]:xi There he became a visiting professor at New York University. He held this position from 1945 until his retirement in 1969, though he was not salaried by the university.[6] Businessman and libertarian commentator Lawrence Fertig, a member of the NYU Board of Trustees, funded Mises and his work.[12][13] For part of this period, Mises studied currency issues for the Pan-Europa movement, which was led by a fellow NYU faculty member and Austrian exile, Richard Coudenhove-Kalergi.[14] In 1947, Mises became one of the founding members of the Mont Pelerin Society. Mises had an indirect role in the economic reconstruction of Europe after World War II through his professional relationships with Ludwig Erhard, Charles de Gaulle and Luigi Einaudi.[15] In 1962, von Mises received the Austrian Decoration for Science and Art for political economy[16] at the Austrian Embassy in Washington, D.C.[2]:1034

Mises’s work influenced various Americans, including Benjamin Anderson, Leonard Read, Henry Hazlitt, Max Eastman, legal scholar Sylvester J. Petro, and novelist Ayn Rand. His American students included Israel Kirzner, Hans Sennholz, Ralph Raico, Leonard Liggio, George Reisman and Murray Rothbard.[17]

Mises received students at his home in New York.[18] He retired from teaching at the age of 87.[19] Mises died at the age of 92 in New York. He is buried at Ferncliff Cemetery, in Hartsdale, New York. Grove City College houses the 20,000 page archive of Mises papers and unpublished works.[20]

Mises wrote and lectured extensively on behalf of classical liberalism.[22] In his treatise Human Action, Mises adopted [praxeology]] as a general conceptual foundation of the social sciences and set forth his methodological approach to economics.[citation needed]

Mises criticized socialism in his 1922 work Socialism: An Economic and Sociological Analysis:

The only certain fact about Russian affairs under the Soviet regime with regard to which all people agree is: that the standard of living of the Russian masses is much lower than that of the masses in the country which is universally considered as the paragon of capitalism, the United States of America. If we were to regard the Soviet regime as an experiment, we would have to say that the experiment has clearly demonstrated the superiority of capitalism and the inferiority of socialism.[23]

Green New Deal Vote Results—NO Senate Votes supported it

Ocasio-Cortez’s ‘Green New Deal’ Fails In Senate. NO Senators Supported It.

Socialist Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s (D-NY) “Green New Deal” overwhelmingly failed in the Senate on Tuesday when it was put to a vote, as not a single senator voted in support of it.

“Not a single senator backed her bill during the vote, a 57-0 filibuster,” The Washington Times reported. “Forty-three Democrats voted ‘present,’ refusing to take a stand.”

“Republicans said it was a devastating blow to the democratic socialist movement’s marquee proposal, which called for an upheaval in American energy, overhaul of the construction sector, and the largest expansion in history of the social safety net,” the Times added.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said he was putting the far-left proposal to a vote to see which Democrats supported it.

“The American people will see,” McConnell said before the vote. “They’ll see which senators are so fully committed to radical left-wing ideology that they can’t even vote ‘no’ on self-inflicted economic ruin that would take a sledgehammer to America’s middle class.”

The Times noted that even Democrat Senator Ed Markey, who co-authored the bill with Ocasio-Cortez, did not vote for it.

Ocasio-Cortez responded to the Senate’s rejection of her “Green New Deal” by claiming on Twitter that she told Democratic Senators not to vote for it and to instead vote “present.”

Socialism Explained: Socialism Fails at Political Equality—It is about Tyrannical Power

Socialism Explained:

Socialism Fails at Political Equality—It is about Tyrannical Power

Socialism  is “a fervid but false solicitude [compassion] for the unfortunate over whom they thus gain mastery, and then enslave them.” ~David O. McKay

Socialism is about Tyrannical Power, not Political Equality

The White House February 19, 2019

“We know that socialism is not about justice. It’s not about equality; it’s not about lifting up the poor,” President Trump said yesterday. “Socialism is about one thing only: power for the ruling class. And the more power they get, the more they crave . . . All of us here today know that there is nothing less democratic than socialism.” ~President Donald J. Trump

A crowd of Venezuelan Americans stood before President Donald J. Trump in Miami yesterday, cheering as he put America squarely on the side of those fighting for freedom. “We’re here to proclaim a new day is coming in Latin America,” he said. “In Venezuela and across the western hemisphere, socialism is dying and liberty, prosperity, and democracy are being reborn.”

His message to Nicolas Maduro: “Let your people go.”

American leadership is making the difference. The United States and more than 50 countries across the world have recognized the rightful government of Venezuela. “Within 30 minutes, the United States was proud to be the first nation in the world to recognize President [Juan] Guaido” as the country’s interim leader, President Trump said.

Venezuela, Cuba, and Nicaragua offer a lesson to the world:

Socialism always promises unity but delivers division and hatred. It promises a better future—and inevitably returns to the darkest chapters of the past. Not long ago, Venezuela was the richest country in South America. Today, after its tyrannical government nationalized industries and took over private business, nearly 90 percent of Venezuelans live in poverty.

Americans know this history well, having witnessed socialism destroy countries throughout the 20th century.

Nearly three-fifths of Americans have an unfavorable view of socialism; a majority have a favorable view of capitalism. Support for far-left schemes such as Medicare-for-All has plummeted as voters learn more about what’s in it. The extremist “Green New Deal” is beginning to suffer the same fate.

“We know that socialism is not about justice. It’s not about equality; it’s not about lifting up the poor,” President Trump said yesterday. “Socialism is about one thing only: power for the ruling class. And the more power they get, the more they crave . . . All of us here today know that there is nothing less democratic than socialism.”

Abuse-of-Power Witch Hunt to end?

John Dowd Says Mueller Probe Will Clear Trump

“There’s no basis. There’s no exposure. It’s been a terrible waste of time.” ~John Dowd

John Dowd, who once headed Donald Trump’s legal team, is predicting the investigation by special counsel Robert Mueller will clear the president.

Dowd made his comments to ABC News in an interview for an episode of “The Investigation,” a new podcast centered on Mueller’s probe.

“I know exactly what (Mueller) has,” Dowd said. “I know exactly what every witness said, what every document said. I know exactly what he asked. And I know what the conclusion or the result is.”

He added: “There’s no basis. There’s no exposure. It’s been a terrible waste of time.”

“I don’t think there’ll be a report. I will be shocked if anything regarding the president is made public, other than ‘We’re done.’”

Dowd called the investigation “one of the greatest frauds this country’s ever seen.”

While on the job, Dowd said he provided Mueller’s office with extensive documents, but put his foot down when it came to a possible special counsel interview with Trump.

Dowd said he did not want to establish a precedent by permitting the interview.

“You cannot treat the president like anybody,” he said.

And he called the indictments stemming from the probe “nickel-dime process crimes.”

“I ran big corruption cases,” he said. “I didn’t go around, picking scabs and just making any case I could make.”

He offered the advice for Mueller: “Your job is to find out if there’s collusion or there was obstruction. And the answer’s ‘no,’ so let’s get on with it.”

GOP bill vs. Infanticide

Born-Alive Infant Protection Act vs. Infanticide

“We must build a culture that cherishes the dignity and sanctity of innocent human life. All children, born and unborn, are made in the holy image of God,” he said. “Every life is sacred, and every soul is a precious gift from Heaven.” ~President Donald Trump

House Republicans Re-Introduce Born-Alive Act to Protect Babies from Infanticide

Missouri Republican Rep. Ann Wagner re-introduced a bill Wednesday that would protect babies born alive after abortion from infanticide.

Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) asked for unanimous consent for the House to consider the bill.

The Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act would ensure any infant born alive following an abortion receives the same medical care and protection the law gives any newborn baby.

Republican Whip Steve Scalise of Louisiana – who originally co-sponsored the legislation when it was introduced previously – will bring a resolution that provides for floor consideration of Wagner’s bill. The two Republicans would force a vote in the House after 30 legislative days if no action is taken.

“Innocent life must be defended and protected at every stage, and that includes babies born alive during an abortion,” said Scalise in a statement. “We must immediately extend legal protections to these vulnerable newborns and prosecute any doctor who would leave them to die.”

Scalise added he began the process of forcing a vote on the bill “especially after horrific actions taken in New York and Virginia to permit infanticide.”

“The silence from Congressional Democrats is deafening and shameful,” Scalise continued. “Every Member of Congress, regardless of party, needs to go on record against infanticide, and we must immediately take action to stop it. The American people deserve to know where their representatives stand on this critical issue.”

Taxpayer Funded Congressional Pensions to end?

Time to End Taxpayer Funded Congressional Pensions

Sens. Mike Braun (R-IN) and Rick Scott (R-FL) introduced legislation on Tuesday to end taxpayer-funded congressional pensions. Braun contends that this legislation would help drain the D.C. swamp.

Ben Garrison

Sens. Braun and Scott introduced the End Pensions in Congress (EPIC) Act on Tuesday. Lawmakers can receive a taxpayer-funded pension if they work in Congress for five years and their pension can rise even higher depending on their years of service and average of the highest three years of salary.

Braun and Scott’s bill would eliminate the congressional pension.

Sen Braun said in a press release on Tuesday that this bill will help drain the swamp. The Hoosier conservative also said that he would donate his pension to Hoosier charities if Washington bureaucrats force him to accept the pension.
